Jeremiah Clemens ;1 born in New Jersey, ca. 1732; said to have died in Amherst, VA, Nov. 17, 1811; married in New Jersey, c.1763, Elizabeth Moore ; of Trenton New Jersey; daughter of Gershom Moore. Children of Jeremiah Clemens and Elizabeth Moore are: 2. Ezekiel Clemens was born ca.1764, and died estimated 1765-1854 in possibly South Carolina. + 3. Gershom Clemens was born March 26, 1766 in VA., and died January 29, 1839 in Kentucky. 4. James Clemens was born ca.1768, and died estimated 1769-1858. + 5. Samuel B. Clemens was born c.1770 in Macon, Virginia, and died August 7, 1805 in Mason , VA, now WV. 6. Christina Jennett Clemens was born September 18, 1775, and died June 8, 1817 in Henry, VA. She married John T. Crews 15 April 1798. 7. Mahlon Clemens was born ca.1782, and died estimated 1814-1873. He married Nancy Miles December 9, 1809. 8. Deborah Clemens was born ca.1785, and died after 1848 in Amherst, VA. She married Feb. 12, 1814, Anderson L. Crews. 9. Phoebe Clemens was born ca.1787, and died after 1846. She married Thomas Miles September 12, 1809. According to tradition Gershom first settled on Rondeau Island and operated the Golconda Ferry. There is disagreement about the father of the above children; is he Jeremiah or is he Abraham Clemens. The answer is apparently Jeremiah Clemens. Proof should be more detailed with references. Gershom Clemens, a widower, of Livingston, KY, married second in Livingston County, KY, Jan. 31, 1817, Margaret (Gillespie) Trimble, widow of James Trimble who died in 1812, Bondsman: John Berry. Children: + 19. James Ford Clemens; born Livingston, KY, April 1, 1818; living in 1880. + 20. Gershom Gillespie Clemens; born in Livingston, KY, March 9, 1821; died November 19, 1846; married Mary A. Lemon/Lemen. Gershom Clemens, Sr., according to his great grand-daughter Mrs. Azelie Clemens Love, settled Roudeau Island in the Ohio River near Golconda, IL, Jan. 1, 1800 and reared his family by his first wife on this island. His son, Jonathan R. Clemens was born on Rondeau Island which is a part of Livingston, KY. The Virginia 1790 census does not show an Usher household. The Augusta County, VA records by Judge Chalkley should be checked - three volumes. Margaret or Margarette (Gillespie) Trimble was a daughter of William Gillespie, Revolutionary Soldier or possibly a daughter of Matthew Gillespie and his second wife Frances Pickens of Abbeville District, S. Margaret (Gillespie) Trimble married second, in Livingston, KY, in 1817, Gershom Clemens, a widower. Livingston County, KY, Court Order Book, page 119, April 20, 1812: "Margret Trimble widow and relict of James Trimble Deceased came into and made oath as the law directs and entered into bond with Elisha Reese, John Brown, her securities in the penalty of Twelve hundred dollars conditioned as the law directs whereupon its ordered that she obtain Certificate of Administration on the goods chattells and credits of the said James Trimble Decd. and its further ordered that Andrew Love, Edward Lacey, Jr., Robert Lacey, James Given and Christopher Haynes or any three of them being first sworn do appraise the goods Chattells and slaves if any of James Trimble Deceased and make report thereof." Livingston County, KY, Court Order Book, page 130, May 18, 1812: "An Appraise bill of the goods and Chattells of James Trimble Decd. was 2 exhibited in court and examined and approved of by the court and ordered to be recorded." Livingston County, KY, Court Order Book, page 142, July 20, 1812: "A Sale bill of the goods and chattells of James Trimble was returned into court and ordered to be recorded" 2 Livingston County, KY, Court Order Book, page 163, July 17, 1820: "On motion of Gershom Clemens its ordered that West Harris, John Cocherham, James Ford, John Young, Wm. Gray or any three who being first sworn do divide, a lot & set apart to Margaret Clemens, formerly Margaret Trimble, her dower in her deceased Husbands Estate agreeably to law and make report thereof to the next term of this court." Livingston County, KY, Court Order Book, page 47: At a County Court Began and held for Livingston County at the Courthouse in the Town of Salem on Monday the 8th day of January 1824 Present: Drew Champion, Daniel Monroe & J. O. Shighany? Ordered that Christopher Haynes, William Gray and David Owens be and they are hereby appointed Commissioners to settle with Margaret Clemmons late Margaret Trimble her administration of the estate of James Trimble deceased & Report & c. Livingston County, KY, Court Order Book, page 426, Monday July 5, 1830: On motion of Gershom Clemens It is ordered that William Peppin, Christopher Haynes, James Martin, Wm. Thompson, Jr. & John Tolley or any three of them be and they are hereby appointed Commissioners to allot and set apart to Margaret Clemens late Margaret Trimble her dower in the estate of James Trimble, decd. her late husband that they report and etc. 5. Samuel B. Clemens was born c.1770 in Macon, Virginia, killed by a falling log at a house raising at Point Pleasant on Kanawa River in Mason, Virginia [now West Virginia], August 7, 1805; married Paulia Goggis (other sources farther removed show name as Pamela Goggins). Children: + 21. John Marshall Clemens; born Campbell, VA, Aug. 17, 1798; died in Hannibal, MO, March 24, 1847; married Jane Lampton of Adair, KY. 22. Elizabeth Clemens; born ca. 1801; married a Pollard of Virginia. She was living in Liberty, WV in 1886,. 2 The appraisal and sale records cannot now be found in the County Court Clerk’s office at Smithland. 3 + 23. Hannibal Clemens; born Nov. 6, 1803; married Jane Jones near Monticello, Wayne County, KY. 24. Caroline Clemens; born March 25, 1806; married Isaac Suttle of Barren, KY After the death of Samuel B. Clemens, Paulia Goggis married Simon Hancock. She lived and died near Columbia, KY. She had a daughter with Simon Hancock named Polly Hancock who married William H. Sanders and lived in Louisville, KY in 1886. 10. Elizabeth Clemens ; born Oct. 14, 1793; married in Livingston, KY, June 9, 1811, James King of Golconda, IL. Children as shown by Rev. Alfred Bennett: 25. Sarah Minerva King; married a Mr. Floyd. 26. James King. 27. Ann King. 28. Polly King; married an Armstrong. 29. Elizabeth King; married a Sutherland. 30. Easter Jane King; married a Finney. Bondsman was Gresham Clemens; license dated June 8, 1811. After the death of her husband, Paula Goggis [Pamela Goggins] Clemens came to Adair, KY where she married Simon Hancock. She lived and died near Columbia, KY. A daughter of this second marriage of Paulia Goggins Clemens was Polly Hancock who was born ca. 1813, and married William H. Sanders (who died prior to 1886). Polly Sanders was living in Louisville, KY in 1886. 13. David Bell Clemens ; born May 20, 1800; married in Livingston, KY, Feb. 18, 1820, J ane Lema Gillespie (born in Abbeville District, SC prior to 1800), sister of Margarette Gillespie Trimble Clemens. Bondsman: Gershom Clemens. Children as given by Rev. Alfred Bennett: 31. Kate Clemens; married first, S, D. Hemphill; and second, a Mr. Collier. 32. Usher Clemens; killed at the battle of Shiloh in Civil War. 33. Jane Clemens; married Thomas Thompson. On February 18, 1820, David and Gershom Clemens signed a marriage bond for David to marry Lema Gillespie. There is a notation on the marriage certificate that “the father of David Clemens gave his consent in person and Jane L. Gillespie is of age.” David B. Clemens is reported by Mrs. Azelie Clemens Love to have lived near Carrsville, KY in Livingston, KY and raised a family. 15. Jeremiah M. Clemens ; born Kentucky Feb. 6, 1807; died in Livingston, KY, in 1847; married first, in Livingston County, KY, Amanda Warferd [Warford] . Bondsman: Henry Woodyard. Children according to Mrs. Azelie Clemens Love: 34. Margaret Clemens; married James Brown. 4 + 35. Thomas M. Clemens; born Nov. 4, 1833; died Sept. 23, 1901; living 1860; married first, Martha Ann Boyd and second, Sarah Parmels Boyd. Jeremiah M.
