ISFD 1E04 - Science and the Shroud Part 1 – the Shroud of Turin Research Project (STURP) - the Team and Their Science ISFD 1E04 - Science and the Shroud Part 1 – The Shroud of Turin Research Project (STURP) - The Team and Their Science Part 2 - The Post-STURP Era of Shroud Research – 1981 to the Present Barrie Schwortz General Description The objective of Part 1 of this course is to provide students with a clear overview of the STURP team and its members, the team’s genesis and history, the in-depth level of their advance preparation, their actual examination of the cloth in October 1978 and the resulting scientific papers that were generated from their work and ultimately published in refereed scientific journals afterwards. Their cumulative work and conclusions form the primary database of credible scientific knowledge that exists today in the scientific literature and points to the Shroud’s authenticity. The objective of Part 2 of the course is to provide students with a clear overview of the evolution of Shroud research in the post-STURP era. The course covers key events in recent Shroud history, including the 1997 Turin Chapel fire and its repercussions and the 2002 restoration of the Shroud. The course provides access to Shroud research that has been completed in recent years, evaluates its techniques and conclusions and examines the role the internet has played in furthering communication, publication and distribution of data amongst Shroud scholars worldwide. Language of the Course English Learning Outcomes (LO) 1. Overview of the planning, preparation and testing performed by the STURP team in 1978 2. Review of STURP results and conclusions 3. Provide the student with credible, published scientific references for the study of the Shroud 4. Overview of the scientific research that was performed in the post-STURP era Methodology - Classes will be presented remotely via previously recorded lectures Evaluation - The Part 1 final examination will require the student to write an essay answering the question, “What is the importance of Shroud Science to Faith?” - The Part 2 final examination requires the students to write an essay presenting what they believe are the three most important events that occurred in Sindonology since 1981 and explain why. - Each essay should be a minimum of six pages. Accepted 12 July, 2012 On the Turin Shroud (TS) is depicted a faint double image of a naked man who has suffered a violent death. The image seems to be that of a real human body. Additionally, red stains of different size, form and density are spread all over the body image and in a few instances outside the body. Forensic examination by help of different analyzing tools reveals these stains as human blood. The distribution and flow of the blood, the position of the body are compatible with the fact that the Turin Shroud Man (TSM) has been crucified. This paper analyses the already known essential forensic findings supplied by new findings and experiments by the authors. Compared to the rather minute gospel description of the Passion of the Christ, then, from a forensic point of view, no findings speak against the hypothesis that the TS once has enveloped the body of the historical Jesus. Key words: Blood chemistry, crucifixion, forensic studies, Turin Shroud. INTRODUCTION The interest of the forensic examiners for the Turin Edwards et al.,1986; Zugibe, 2005). • A Critical Summary of Observations, Data and Hypotheses
TThhee SShhrroouudd ooff TTuurriinn A Critical Summary of Observations, Data and Hypotheses If the truth were a mere mathematical formula, in some sense it would impose itself by its own power. But if Truth is Love, it calls for faith, for the ‘yes’ of our hearts. Pope Benedict XVI Version 4.0 Copyright 2017, Turin Shroud Center of Colorado Preface The purpose of the Critical Summary is to provide a synthesis of the Turin Shroud Center of Colorado (TSC) thinking about the Shroud of Turin and to make that synthesis available to the serious inquirer. Our evaluation of scientific, medical forensic and historical hypotheses presented here is based on TSC’s tens of thousands of hours of internal research, the Shroud of Turin Research Project (STURP) data, and other published research. The Critical Summary synthesis is not itself intended to present new research findings. With the exception of our comments all information presented has been published elsewhere, and we have endeavored to provide references for all included data. We wish to gratefully acknowledge the contributions of several persons and organizations. First, we would like to acknowledge Dan Spicer, PhD in Physics, and Dave Fornof for their contributions in the construction of Version 1.0 of the Critical Summary. We are grateful to Mary Ann Siefker and Mary Snapp for proofreading efforts. The efforts of Shroud historian Jack Markwardt in reviewing and providing valuable comments for the Version 4.0 History Section are deeply appreciated. We also are very grateful to Barrie Schwortz (Shroud.com) and the STERA organization for their permission to include photographs from their database of STURP photographs.

25555 Text 10/7/04 8:56 AM Page 13 1 the enigma of the holy shroud The Shroud of Turin is the holiest object in Christendom. To those who believe, it is proof not only of Jesus the man, but it is also evidence of the Resurrection, the central dogma for hundreds of millions of the faithful. Regarded as the winding sheet, the burial cloth of Jesus, it is revered by many, and on the rare instances when it is displayed, the lines to view the Shroud go on for hours. The Shroud measures fourteen feet three inches long and three feet seven inches wide. It depicts the full image of a six-foot-tall man with the visible consequences of a savage beating and cruel death on the cross, in other words, crucifixion. Belief in the authenticity of the Shroud is not uni- versal. To critics it is a medieval production, created either by paint or by a more remarkable process not to be duplicated until photography was in- vented in the nineteenth century. Nevertheless, a fake. Despite the debate about the Shroud’s authenticity, it has been de- scribed as “one of the most perplexing enigmas of modern time.” This enigma has been the subject of study by an army of chemists, physicists, pathologists, biblical scholars, and art historians. Experts on textiles, pho- tography, medicine, and forensic science have all weighed in with an opin- ion.1 Had theCOPYRIGHTED image on the burial cloth MATERIALbeen that of Charlemagne or Napoleon, the debate might have proceeded along scientific lines.

A NEWSLETTER ABOUT THE HOLY SHROUD OF TURIN edited by REX MORGAN Author of PERPETUAL MIRACLE and SHROUD GUIDE ISSUE No. 40 APRIL 1987 A LARGELY FORGOTTEN EARLY SINDONOLOGIST, DON NOGUIER DE MALIJAY, WHOSE WORK IS REVIEWED IN THIS ISSUE 2 SHROUD NEWS 40 April 1987 EDITORIAL I regret that you will receive this edition a little late but my programme of deadlines has been very extensive this year. One of the best programmes ever put out over Australian radio on the Shroud took place just before Easter when Sydney Radio Station 2UE went to air on Sunday night with a two and a half hour session with Rex Morgan and hosted by Peter Shields. Shields had managed to organise several international telephone hook-ups which included long interviews with Father PETER RINALDI, Dr WALTER McCRONE, Dr ALAN ADLER, and IAN WILSON. Peter and Rex then took many calls from the public on a phone-in discussion which went on well after the programme had finished resulting in a broadcast the following week of another half- hour of the phone-in. The Shroud of Turin Research Project in the US is seeking financial help through every Shroud agency in the world to support its next programme of testing which involves, this year, the Carbon 14 dating procedures discussed in earlier issues of SHROUD NEWS. Should any Australian reader wish to contribute I can put them in touch with the funding co- ordinators in the States. Discussion and academic argument continues all over the world on many aspects of Shroud research.

A NEWSLETTER ABOUT THE HOLY SHROUD OF TURIN edited by REX MORGAN, Author of several books on the Shroud Issue Number 80 DECEMBER 1993 Vista esteriore della Metropolitana e della Reale Cappella. AN ILLUSTRATION FROM A BOOK PUBLISHED TO COINCIDE WITH THE 1898 EXPOSITION OF THE SHROUD IN TURIN, "La Santissima Sindone del Signore" 2 SHROUD NEWS No 80 (December 1993) EDITORIAL It is interesting to compare three recent reports of the Paris Symposium in other journals. The French Lettre Mensuelle commented on the significance of the papers by Ribay, Babinet, Mrs Jackson, Fossati, Zaninotto, LeGrand, Bongert, Pfeiffer and Schlomer, Mr Jackson, Clercq, Dubarle, and Lejeune. In the American Shroud Sources abstracts were reprinted of "some of the most significant" of over thirty papers. These were by Kouznetsov, Van Haelst, Lavoie, Morgan, Clercq and Rinaudo. On the other hand the British BSTS Newsletter commented on the papers of Zaninotto, Pfeiffer, Morgan, Lejeune, Bergeret, Lindner, Dickinson, Lavoie, John Jackson, Piczek, Maloney, Adler and Kouznetsov. This variation of opinion from one country to another and from one journal to another, is, of course, the very lifeblood of unbiased research. It seems to me, as we come to the end of another year of Shroud research, that there is far greater realisation that the carbon testings of 1988 are less and less acceptable. Almost every paper delivered at the Rome conference and most of what has been written and said before and since makes it quite plain that something was very wrong with the Turin capers. Just what that is has yet to be determined, if it ever is.
