Superb sunshine, good cooks and a happy throng for the AALGA BBQ on Sunday 2 September 2018

Letter from the Editor As the cover photo shows, the warm, sunny weather continued into September and the annual AALGA barbecue was a great success, as was the Messy Church held in Abington Woods (see pages 4, 16). Congratulations to the authors who received awards on 15 September for books of significant local interest (page 6). It was good to see that Audrey Bugg’s record of 60 years attendance at Great Abington church was marked with cake and a toast and that the church received an ‘Engage Award’ for the increased community activities made possible by the new facilities (page 5). The accompanying flyer points to a concert in the church on 3 November as the next major community event. There is another of the popular King’s Taverners concerts in Hildersham too (page 9). A joyful Harvest Festival service was held at the United Reformed Church (page 4) with the food donations going to the Food Bank. On 14 October the URC will share a joint Communion service at Great Abington Church. The next Messy Church on 28 October will concentrate on the annual ‘operation Christmas child’ which aims to fill shoeboxes with Christmas gifts to be distributed to needy children (page 6). The new Abington Social Cycling Group was sufficiently encouraged by the inaugural ride to plan a second outing on 11 October (page 12). For those still more energetic there is the annual 10k and 2k Fun Run on 7 October (page 13). The Table Tennis group has now got two match fixtures, which are listed on page 12 along with the weekly practice sessions. Thanks to the organiser, Raj, this is proving to be a very successful initiative. The second Repair Café will be at the institute on 27 October so look out your precious objects that need some TLC from experts (page 13). There will be a Flower Workshop on 11 October and the Gardening Club has a meeting early in the month. A list of all the topics for meetings of the Gardening Club throughout the 2018/19 season is on page 16. The Forget-Me-Not Club has interesting speakers and also offers a Fish & Chip lunch, and a Jacket Potato lunch preceded by a special session of flu injections. Definitely not to be missed! (page 15). If it is time to consider booking flu injections (page 18) it must be time to think about ordering more oil. Rod Willcox would like your orders by 4 October for delivery the next week (see page 13). It is also time for the annual Poppy Appeal (page 4). Please give generously. Don’t forget that British Summer Time ends on Sunday 28 October when the clocks go BACK one hour. News from the Pews Following a communion service in Great Abington Church on Sunday 5 August a small celebration was held to commemorate 60 years (exactly) since Audrey Bugg first came to a service in this church. Since this time Audrey has worked tirelessly supporting the church in so many different ways and indeed is still a member of the PCC where her knowledge of ‘church life’ is phenomenal. We are indebted to her and offer our love and sincere thanks.

The Bishop of Huntingdon along with his wife Jean visited Great Abington Church on Saturday 8 September to present a cheque for £103 for the Engage Award 2018. This was awarded on the C of E’s report on the rural church “Released for Mission” which stated, “When toilets and a kitchen are in a church the building is used much more frequently”. This is especially true at St Mary’s Great Abington where the PCC has witnessed significant growth in activities in the church and churchyard following the creation of these splendid facilities.

MESSY CHURCH SHOEBOX PARTY, 3.30pm SUNDAY 28 OCTOBER We are having a special Messy Church this month during which we will be filling shoeboxes with essential items and gifts for needy children of all ages around the world, so that they can experience the joy of receiving a present at Christmas. These boxes go to all children regardless of their religion. This venture has been running successfully in schools and churches for the last 25 years. Do come along and join in the fun. There will be the opportunity to make some personal gifts and cards to go in the boxes, and maybe the chance to learn how to knit. The boxes will contain small toys, educational supplies, hygiene items, gloves, hats, scarves and jewellery which we are beginning to collect. You may like to bring an item of your own and a photograph to put in your box. NO used/damaged clothing, liquids or lotions, knives, military figures, medicines, chocolate, food, fragile items, political, religious or racial material, wordy books. Boxes need to be labelled with "BOY" or "GIRL" with the choice of three age groups which are 2-4 years, 5-9 years, or 10-14 years. It costs £5 to cover collection, handling and transportation costs so any donations are gratefully received. We will be supplying the shoeboxes. There will be additional activities during the afternoon which will conclude with a delicious tea at 4.30pm. For further details, please ring Rosemary on 891 718 or see the website www.samaritans-purse.org.uk/operation-christmas-child .

Great Abington Parish Council An Active Council Linton Road Development Work on the Linton Road site is under way and scheduled to be completed in late 2019. The Parish Council has agreed to put forward the name of Larkfield for the road. The development includes ‘affordable housing’ so please remember to ensure that you are on the list via Homelink http://www.home-link.org.uk/ , if you would like to be considered for one of these units. We expect that there will be some for rent and some for purchase under a shared equity scheme. Local Plan The Local Plan is finally at the stage where it can be adopted by SCDC. This means that we should now be able to proceed with the Neighbourhood Plan for the former Land Settlement and it is hoped that the referendum, required as part of the process, will take place in December. Footways After months of effort we have finally managed to get the damaged footway between the High Street/ Road and Chalky Road repaired. Please remember that footways throughout the village are for pedestrians and should not be used for the parking of vehicles. The Parish Council is aware of many occasions where pedestrians and mobility scooter users have to go into the road to get around vehicles parked on the footway. Planning S/3162/18/FL. 5 Moorefield – Single storey extension. Parish Council supported. S/3031/18/FL. 92 High Street – Interior alterations and new windows and doors. Parish council supported. S/3029/18/FL. 52 North Rd. – Demolish outbuildings & build single storey extension. Parish Council made no recommendation but did submit comments. District Council decisions: S/2381/18/FL. 45 North Road – convert existing house into domestic garage. GAPC recommended refusal and District Council refused. S/2371/18/FL. The Coach House, Abington Lodge – convert coach house into residential accommodation. GAPC recommended approval and District Council approved. S/1937/18/FL. 76 High Street – change pitch of garage roof, increase height of walls to suit installation of solar panels. GAPC recommended approval and District Council approved. S/2179/18/F. Woodside, Linton Road – single storey extension. GAPC recommended approval and District Council approved. Great Abington Parish Council Meetings Held in Abington Village Institute Bernie Talbot (Chairman) tel: 892 647 Planning Committees: Arranged as required (usually Mondays at 6.30pm). There will be an opportunity early in the meeting for members of the public to speak to the council about matters of concern. Little Abington Parish Council A Quality Parish Council Around the village Parking: Please do not park on the pedestrian pavements. They are for pedestrians, prams, mobility scooters and wheelchairs. Parking can damage manholes, drains and the surface. Please use driveways if possible or park on the road in a place that will not obstruct traffic – and remember that the High Street is a bus route. Parking on grass verges can also damage the surface and plants, especially in wet weather or on the protected road verge in Bourn Bridge Road. Footpaths: We are fortunate to have some permissive paths, notably around the Bourn Bridge Road fields and Sluice Wood – see below. Please respect the landowners’ goodwill – they are for pedestrians only. Recreation Ground: this is also for pedestrians (there is a public footpath along the western edge). Cyclists should give way to people. Motor vehicles, including motor- bikes, are allowed only with the express permission of the committee. A new fence has been erected round the children’s play area. Photo by Peter Brunning Trees and hedges: a reminder to trim back your trees and hedges. With darker evenings now, it’s more important not to obscure streetlights. Notes from Parish Council Planning Meeting on 3 September S/2697/18/FL: 29 West Field - Single storey side and rear extension. New flue to woodburning stove. Internal alterations and conversion of garage to family room. Agreed to support the application without referral to the SCDC Planning Committee. S/3061/18/FL: 35 West Field - Single storey front extension to improve layout and facilitate disabled access to the property (previous application refused). Agreed to support the application without referral to the SCDC Planning Committee. S/2981/18/FL: 54 High Street - Temporary Planning Permission (for 5 years) for change of use from C3 (domestic) to D1 (health) and widening of access. [This is an application by the Headway charity to use it for day care and therapy.] This was supported, without referral to the SCDC Planning Committee, but with comments about drainage and further planting to mitigate any traffic noise. Footpaths: The Perse School proposes to formalise residents’ access (on foot) to paths around their playing fields in Bourn Bridge Road with permissive path signs. It is understood that the Cambridge International School will follow suit. This was agreed; it was suggested that signs make clear what is permitted or prohibited. Hildersham Focus

Musique sans Frontières The King’s Taverners will be entertaining us again with an evening of music, song and, hopefully, some of their amusing monologues. Please join us at 7.30pm at Hildersham church on Saturday 13 October 2018. Entry will cost £10, including drinks and refreshments. Tickets at the door.

Sunday 21 October Café Church The theme will be ‘Beginning with Baptism’ and we would especially like to invite anyone who was baptised in Holy Trinity, Hildersham to join us and to celebrate their membership of the Hildersham church family. The service will begin with the usual tea and cakes shortly before 4pm. I wonder how many of us there will be.

Hildersham Parish Council A Quality Parish Council

Report on the Hildersham Parish Council meeting held on 11 September 2018. Having had an update from Keith Day about the Parish Nurse Scheme at the July meeting, councillors agreed to donate £3000 towards helping to fund the scheme for the next three years. The new Hildersham website is in the process of being finalised and should be available in the next month or so. It will include helpful information about the church, village hall and the parish council. The fencing contractor has advised the council that work on re-fencing the perimeter of the allotment should be done by the end of September, now that the ground is no longer too hard to work with. The Parish Council is extremely grateful to Hilary Cunningham for the hours of work she has undertaken reading through the council’s records trying to establish the status of the land administered by the council, in relation to possibly creating a Community Land Trust. Based upon the advice given, the council agreed to seek specialist legal advice. There are a number of local residents waiting for an allotment to become vacant, so if any current allotment holders are considering surrendering their plot, please can they contact the Clerk. There is still one vacancy for a parish councillor, so if you are interested in joining the council and would like to learn more about what is involved, please speak to an existing parish councillor or the Clerk.

The next meeting of Hildersham Parish Council will be on Tuesday 13 November at Hildersham Village Hall from 7.30pm. and everyone is welcome to attend.

What will you bring to the Repair Café? The Abingtons second Repair Café will be at the Institute on Saturday 27 October, 10.00am to 1.00pm. The Café is your opportunity to bring along something you own that has broken or developed a fault, to see whether a knowledgeable repairer can fix it and bring it back into use. If you bring an item to be fixed, you will sit alongside the repairer attempting the repair, to maybe lend a hand and to be consulted if some critical point is reached. What can I bring? You can bring to be repaired: portable household appliances and electrical items (excluding microwave ovens and TVs), computers, mobile phones, jewellery, bicycles, garden tools, pumps, books, and fabric items and clothes needing sewing repair. Do I need to book? It’s best to book your slot. Details can be found on www.theabingtons.org.uk/events/2018/10/repair-cafe-2018/ or you can email the team at [email protected] , with as many relevant details of your repair as you can find (manufacturer, purchase date, model number, nature of fault, etc). Or just drop in on the day and have a coffee in Jeremiah’s café while you wait. Is there a charge? Repairs, whether successful or not, are free, but donations will be invited to cover the costs of the Repair Café. The Repair Café team look forward to seeing you on the day – do spread the word to your neighbours too.

Abington & Hildersham Women's Institute In September Mike Francis, Director of Home Instead Senior Care, gave an interesting but worrying talk about the rise of scams and fraud which target older people via the internet, telephone and post. The sums involved are staggering: £190 billion across the UK. It is not only little old ladies who are duped - a local GP lost £1500. Criminal gangs have "suckers lists" of people who have responded to e-mail, telephone or postal scams and these lists are sold on to other gangs internationally. The victims get bombarded with "offers" and brainwashed into believing the scammers, who may be posing as bankers, solicitors, charity workers, computer experts etc. Older people are targeted because they are often asset rich but lonely, in poor health and declining in cognitive ability, leading to poor decision-making. Victims are affected not only financially but also emotionally: embarrassment, loss of trust, often leading to withdrawal from society. We can protect ourselves by registering with the Telephone and Mail Preference Services, BT Call Blocker and not opening suspicious emails. But most importantly NEVER GIVE CARD PIN NUMBERS to anyone! A useful help sheet can be downloaded at: https://www.homeinstead.co.uk/Resources/senior-fraud-toolkit.pdf . (There is a copy in the Institute).

Next Meeting 8 October at 7.30pm: Member's Night with a Japanese theme - please wear or bring something Japanese. New members and visitors always welcome. Marilyn Broadhurst (893 214) Scrabble Club The next meeting of the Scrabble Club is on Tuesday 23 October at 7pm in the Institute. New members very welcome. Sheena Fraser

AALGA Annual BBQ – 2 September

As the picture shows, we had perfect weather for the annual BBQ. In addition to allotment holders and their families, we had a good number of villagers who enjoyed the BBQ, as well as the opportunity to wander around the allotments and see all the different crops that are growing. Linton Village College The start of the new academic year is an important time for building relationships. Our new Year 7 cohort have been busy bonding in their tutor groups and teachers and students across the school have been getting to know each other in their new classes and houses. At Linton Village College we prize relationships. Strong connections between staff and students, and students and their peers, support wellbeing and academic success. While relationships are at the heart of learning, they are not always easy to create and sustain. Secondary schooling can prove a challenging time for friendship issues and teenage cliques; the pressure to fit in and be accepted by peers is not always easy to navigate, especially with the additional influence of social media. The shift in the PSHE curriculum to give a greater emphasis to healthy relationships, as well as e-safety, is an important one to equip young people with the opportunity to learn and reflect on the connections they make. This term we have made changes to pastoral care structures and systems at the College in recognition of the need for clear, targeted support to enable all of our young people to achieve their potential. We have been joined by a new Inclusion Administrator to support the pastoral team including our Inclusion Manager, and have some new roles including Heads of House, Safeguarding Officer and Case Workers in recognition of the need for intervention and pastoral care that focuses on safeguarding our young people and providing vulnerable students with bespoke care and support. We are also in the process of recruiting important support staff positions, including Teaching and Catering Assistants that are advertised on our website. Being relational is one of our Trust’s core values; it is central to staff recruitment, underpins our behavioural expectations and defines the teaching and learning culture at LVC. Our positive climate for learning is always commented on by external visitors to the College. We are looking forward to showcasing our amazing students at our Open Evening on Thursday 4th October and subsequent Open Mornings.
