Travis laid out the two 18-hole golf courses at Westchester Country Club, just 30 miles outside New York City, that opened in 1922. The courses were built by the Philadelphia-based architectural firm of Toomey and Flynn who built the modern course at Shinnecock Hills toward the end of the same decade. The club joined the USGA on Jan. 13, 1922, several months before the courses opened for play that summer. The West Course has hosted many memorable golf events over its history. Beginning with the 1923 U.S. Women’s Amateur, the course went on to host 44 PGA Tour events. The Thunderbird Classic came to Westchester in 1963, with Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus winning two of the first three years.

  • Assessing Golfer Performance on the PGA TOUR
Vol. 42, No. 2, March–April 2012, pp. 146–165 ISSN 0092-2102 (print) ISSN 1526-551X (online) http://dx.doi.org/10.1287/inte.1120.0626 © 2012 INFORMS Assessing Golfer Performance on the PGA TOUR Mark Broadie Graduate School of Business, Columbia University, New York, New York 10027, [email protected] The game of golf involves many different types of shots, including long tee shots (typically hit with a driver), approach shots to greens, shots from the sand, and putts on the green. Although determining the winner of a golf tournament by counting strokes is easy, assessing which factors contributed most to the victory is not. In this paper, we apply an analysis based on strokes gained, introduced previously, to assess professional golfer performance in different parts of the game [Broadie M (2008) Assessing golfer performance using Golfmetrics. Crews D, Lutz R, eds. Sci. Golf V: Proc. World Sci. Congress Golf (Energy in Motion, Inc., Mesa, AZ), 253–262]. Strokes gained is a simple and intuitive measure of each shot’s contribution to a golfer’s score and was imple- mented by the PGA TOUR to measure putting in May 2011. We apply strokes gained analysis to extensive ShotLink™ data to rank PGA TOUR golfers in various skill categories and to quantify the factors that differen- tiate these golfers. Long-game shots (those starting over 100 yards from the hole) explain about two-thirds of the score variability among PGA TOUR golfers. Tiger Woods is ranked first in total strokes gained, and at or near the top of PGA TOUR golfers in each of the three main categories: long game, short game, and putting.

Westchester Country Club real estate Page 1 of 4 Living on the grounds of the Westchester Country Club Bill Cary, [email protected] 5:11 p.m. EDT June 7, 2015 Well beyond the steady value of their homes, people who live on the grounds of Westchester Country Club rave about the neighborliness, walkability and the strong sense of community among homeowners. Not only will attendees at this week's KPMG Women's PGA Championship get a shot at seeing the absolute best golfers in the game, they'll get a glimpse of some pretty swell real estate as they follow their favorite players around the famed West Course of Westchester Country Club. The 125 or so private homes on the gracious, bucolic grounds of the 583-acre Harrison club — majestic stone Buy Photo Tudors, sprawling Mediterraneans, classic 1920s center-hall Colonials — are among the finest you're likely to see in a single neighborhood anywhere in the county. And they have pretty consistently held their value (Photo: Seth Harrison/The Journal News) through the vagaries of the local real estate market. "Sales have remained consistent this past year and there are currently six homes on the market ranging in price from $2,550,000 to $3,995,000," says Coldwell Banker agent Ken Boucher, who grew up on the club grounds and now lives there, in a different house, with his wife, Liz, also a Coldwell Banker agent. "The very prestigious homes on the grounds can sell for over $5 million." Well beyond the steady value of their homes, people who live on the grounds, especially families with school-age children, rave about the neighborliness, walkable access to all parts of the club, and the strong, friendly sense of community among the homeowners.

  • 2017 Annual Report a Message from the President
WGA CADDIE SCHOLARSHIP FUND Est. 1956 2017 ANNUAL REPORT A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT BENJAMIN C. KIRSCHENBAUM PRESIDENT WGA CADDIE SCHOLARSHIP FUND Friends of the Caddie Scholarship Fund, This past year marked the start of a transition that creates both challenges and new opportunities. Since 1962, the Caddie Scholarship Fund has been linked with the Westchester Golf Association. The WGA provided staffing and support for all CSF activities. In 2017, the Metropolitan Golf Association assumed the responsibility of administering the operations of the WGA. This elevated the operation of the WGA tournaments and has been a great success. For the 2017-18 school year we granted 76 new scholarships to young men and women who worked in “service to golf” at our member clubs. We now have a total of 292 Caddie Scholars from our member clubs attending 147 different educational institutions and trade schools - a $4 million tuition commitment. We continue to grow our endowed scholarships. The first Tom Nieporte, Sr. Memorial Scholarships were awarded to two outstanding Winged Foot caddies. Sleepy Hollow honored their long-time caddie manager, Joe Barreiro, on his retirement with a new endowed scholarship. Joe has been a loyal supporter of the CSF and the members at Sleepy Hollow raised a record $166,000 for scholarships in his name. We hope other clubs and individuals will consider starting an endowed scholarship. Our golf events were again very successful. The Pro-Am was held in August, at Westchester Country Club; thank you to the membership and staff who helped make it a spectacular day. In July, we reconnected with CSF alumni who enjoyed a great day of golf at Manhattan Woods.

  • HOSPITALITY MANUAL the NORTHERN TRUST 2017 Dear Partners
HOSPITALITY MANUAL THE NORTHERN TRUST 2017 Dear Partners, On behalf of THE NORTHERN TRUST tournament staff, we thank you for your support of this important championship. This year marks an exciting new era of this great event with a new title sponsor in Northern Trust, a new commissioner in Jay Monahan, and a new vision for the lead FedExCup Playoffs event. In 2017, we will show the world how New York does golf- fashion, food, and do-or-die drama on a world stage! THE NORTHERN TRUST is the only world-class professional golf tournament hosted annually in NY/NJ and, as the first FedExCup Playoff event, there is a lot at stake. The very best 125 players in the world will battle for an opportunity to advance to the next event. For those that fail, their season will come to an abrupt end and those that survive will need to fight to put themselves in position to win the FedExCup. With the world’s spotlight upon them and a lot on the line, there is sure to be great theater. And you will have a front row seat with first class views of golf and access to new fan amenities being introduced this year. However, while much will change, our commitment to giving back will remain a constant. The 2016 event generated $1.4 million for local charities throughout NY/NJ, totaling $45 million in charitable giving since the event began in 1967. Through your continued support, we look forward to continuing the tradition of giving back this year as we showcase New York to the world.
