The Archaeological Reconnaissance and Computerization of Hobkirk’s Hill (ARCHH) project has begun initial field operations on this built-over, urban battlefield in Camden, South Carolina. We are using the professional-amateur cooperative archaeology model, loosely based upon the successful BRAVO organization of New Jersey. We have identified an initial survey area and will only test properties within this initial survey area until we demonstrate artifact recoveries to any boundary. Metal detectorist director John Allison believes that this is at least two years' work. Since the battlefield is in well-landscaped yards and there are dozens of homeowners, we are only surveying areas with landowner permission and we will not be able to cover 100% of the land in the survey area. We have a neighborhood meeting planned to explain the archaeological survey project to the landowners. SCAR will provide project handouts and offer a walking battlefield tour for William T. Ranney’s masterpiece, painted in 1845, showing Hobkirk Hill neighbors and anyone else who wants to attend on the final cavalry hand-to-hand combat at Cowpens, hangs Sunday, January 29, 2006 at 3 pm.     1 THE END OF UNCLE TOM A woman, her body ripped vertically in half, introduces The End of Uncle Tom and the Grand Allegorical Tableau of Eva in Heaven from 1995 (figs.3 and 4), while a visual narra- tive with both life and death at stake undulates beyond the accusatory gesture of her pointed finger. An adult man raises his hands to the sky, begging for deliverance, and delivers a baby. A second man, obese and legless, stabs one child with his sword while joined at the pelvis with another. A trio of children play a dangerous game that involves a hatchet, a chopping block, a sharp stick, and a bucket. One child has left the group and is making her way, with rhythmic defecation, toward three adult women who are naked to the waist and nursing each other. A baby girl falls from the lap of one woman while reaching for her breast. With its references to scatology, infanticide, sodomy, pedophilia, and child neglect, this tableau is a troubling tribute to Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin—the sentimental, antislavery novel written in 1852. It is clearly not a straightfor- ward illustration, yet the title and explicit references to racialized and sexualized violence on an antebellum plantation leave little doubt that there is a significant relationship between the two works. Cut from black paper and adhered to white gallery walls, this scene is composed of figures set within a landscape and depicted in silhouette. The medium is particularly apt for this work, and for Walker’s project more broadly, for a number of reasons.

    Plotting the “Female Wits” Controversy: Gender, Genre, and Printed Plays, 1670–16991 Mattie Burkert Utah State University [email protected] At the end of the 1694–95 theatrical season, a group of actors defected from the United Company, housed at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane, to begin their own cooperative. The split of London’s theatrical monopoly into two rival playhouses—Christopher Rich’s “Patent Company” at Drury Lane and Thomas Betterton’s “Actors’ Company” at Lincoln’s Inn Fields—generated demand for new plays that might help either house gain the advantage. This situation cre- ated opportunities for novice writers, including an unprecedented number of women. Paula Backscheider has calculated that more than one-third of the new plays in the 1695–96 season were written by, or adapted from work by, women, including Delarivier Manley, Catherine Trotter, and Mary Pix (1993, 71). This group quickly became the target of a satirical backstage drama, The Female Wits: or, the Triumvirate of Poets at Rehearsal, modeled after George Vil- liers’s 1671 sendup of John Dryden, The Rehearsal. The satire, which was likely performed at Drury Lane in fall 1696, was partially the Patent Company’s re- venge on Manley for withdrawing her play The Royal Mischief during rehearsals the previous spring and taking it to Betterton. However, The Female Wits was also a broader attack on the pretensions of women writers, whom it portrayed as frivolous, self-important upstarts reviving the overblown heroic tragedy of the 1660s and 1670s with an additional layer of feminine sentimentality.2 1 This research was made possible by a grant from the Andrew W.

The „Martello Towers Research Project‟ was commissioned by Fingal County Council and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, with the support of The Heritage Council, in order to collate all known documentation relating to the Martello Towers of the Dublin area, including those in Bray, Co. Wicklow. The project was also supported by Dublin City Council and Wicklow County Council. Martello Towers are one of the most well-known fortifications in the world, with examples found throughout Ireland, the United Kingdom and along the trade routes to Africa, India and the Americas. The towers are typically squat, cylindrical, two-storey masonry towers positioned to defend a strategic section of coastline from an invading force, with a landward entrance at first-floor level defended by a machicolation, and mounting one or more cannons to the rooftop gun platform. The Dublin series of towers, built 1804-1805, is the only group constructed to defend a capital city, and is the most complete group of towers still existing in the world. The report begins with contemporary accounts of the construction and significance of the original tower at Mortella Point in Corsica from 1563-5, to the famous attack on that tower in 1794, where a single engagement involving key officers in the British military became the catalyst for a global military architectural phenomenon. However, the design of the Dublin towers is not actually based on the Mortella Point tower.
