Dear Friends,

This week, we will be celebrating one of my favorite national holidays. Yes, Thanksgiving Day will be here in just a THANKSGIVING DAY few days. 9:00AM MASS We should all do some soul searching at this time. We need to ask ourselves NOTE: There is only 8:30am Mass on the following questions: Am I a person Friday, November 27. No 6:30am Mass. of thanksgiving or am I a person lacking gratitude? How much of my conversation is spent finding fault with others and how much PLEASE NOTE: The Rectory Office will be closed time is spent thanking others? How many times in the past for business on Wednesday, November 25. month have I spoken about people behind their backs and how many times have I tried to build bridges?

We live in an imperfect world. We could spend every waking moment complaining and speaking ill of people, but IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM that would get us nowhere. Sometimes, we need to have a ARCHBISHOP ALLEN VIGNERON hearttoheart conversation with someone who has offended The obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and us. Most people do not look forward to having such a Holy Days of Obligation for people living in or conversation. This sort of dialogue needs to take place in a spirit of humility; otherwise things may just get worse. We visiting the Archdiocese of Detroit has been cannot enter the conversation thinking we have all the extended until Ash Wednesday, answers. We may be judging someone harshly without even February 17, 2021. having all the facts. Please see the full letter on page 9.

Jesus gives us much to think about on the topic of judging. In Matthew 7:15, He spells out the price we pay for judging others. "Stop judging, that you may not be judged. For as you judge, so will you be judged and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you. Why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye? You hypocrite, remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother's eye.”

If we are going to be authentic disciples of the Lord, we need to work on two things simultaneously. First, we need to decrease our negativity: in our thoughts, our words, and our actions. Second, we need to increase our thankfulness: in our thoughts, our words, and our actions.

Remember, we are called to be the light of the world. Do not let your light grow dim due to a judgmental spirit. We are all standing in need of God's mercy. May we lovingly and humbly relate to one another with gratitude and mercy. In Beginning Sunday, November 29, the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:7) He tells us, "Blessed are the and until further notice, our Sunday Mass merciful, they shall obtain mercy.” When I meet the Lord schedule will be: face to face for the first time, I want Him to be all about mercy! How about you? May we live our lives in such a way that will allow this to happen. Saturday 4:30 PM

May mercy and gratitude shine forth in all our lives this Sunday 8:00 AM coming Thanksgiving Day and always. 9:30 AM God’s Peace and Joy, 11:00 AM

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, earliest days have set it apart as a day unlike others. When it is not possible to participate in person in the Sacrifice of the Mass, During these difficult months during the pandemic, I have it is vitally important for every member of the Catholic Church granted a general dispensation from the grave obligation that to observe the Sabbath by prioritizing prayer, time for God and we as Catholic Christians have to attend Mass on Sundays and for family, and works of charity. To that end, many of our Holy Days of Obligation in the Archdiocese of Detroit, in part parishes have been broadcasting their services over the internet to help ease the conscience of those who are unable to be during these last several months. While this virtual means of present for public worship due to risk of illness to themselves watching Mass can never replace the unmediated contact with or their families. The most recent dispensation expires on the Real Presence of Our Lord we receive by being present and November 22, at which point we had hoped the pandemic participating in Mass, these livestreamed Masses have been a would have eased enough to allow all of us to return in an way to help Catholics nourish their souls when they cannot be unrestricted way to our celebrations of the Holy Eucharist. present for Mass.

Unfortunately, local and state health officials report that we Let us trust that the Lord accompanies us through all not only continue to experience an increase in cases in our difficulties, including this pandemic. As we approach Advent region and elsewhere, but that the rate of increase is rising and prepare for flu season, we should remember to pray daily dramatically and dangerously. I have been in communication for health care workers, first responders, including our priests, with leaders in our Catholic hospitals and they are very and all who are and will offer compassionate service and concerned about the immediate future and the challenges they healing in the months to come. Let us also continue to invoke face caring for all those in need, not just those experiencing Our Lady of Lourdes, patroness for those who suffer illness, serious complications from COVID. asking her to pray with us for healing and protection for the people of southeast Michigan and beyond. Dispensation With assurances of my prayers for you, I remain, After carefully considering these and other factors, I am extending the dispensation from the obligation to attend Sincerely yours in Christ, Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation for people living in or visiting the Archdiocese of Detroit until Ash The Most Reverend Allen H. Vigneron Wednesday, February 17, 2021. As we have from the Archbishop of Detroit beginning, we will continue to closely monitor the situation in our region, with an eye on the day – hopefully in the nottoo distant future – when all of us are able to safely reunite in our normal patterns of worship.

Attending Mass

This extension is given so as not to unduly bind the consciences of those who are greatly troubled by the destructive potency of the coronavirus, and to care for the most vulnerable among us, such as the elderly. At the same time, one should not take advantage of the dispensation without a true need. Catholics who have already begun to engage in nonessential activities, such as widening one’s social circle or going out to eat, should return to Sunday Mass – an essential activity – as church capacity allows. Our souls greatly need the grace that comes from the representation of Christ’s saving death and resurrection and this is what Jesus has entrusted to us in the celebration of the Mass. Just as businesses, schools, and other locations have opened safely, so have our parishes. Our pastors, parishes, and the faithful have worked diligently and adapted well in order to ensure the health and wellbeing of everyone who has been able to come to church for Mass, Confession, or to pray. I want to offer my sincere gratitude for the efforts that have been undertaken to implement and maintain the firstrate precautionary measures that have kept our parishes and schools safe.

Keeping Holy the Lord’s Day

Whether or not they are able to attend Mass, all baptized Catholics are reminded of the grave necessity they have to keep holy the Lord’s Day. This a divine law that neither I nor anyone else can ever dispense. Sunday is the day of the Resurrection of our Lord, and as such Christians from the Page 10 Church of the Divine Child, Dearborn, Michigan

Praying with the Mass Readings

Spiritual reading of Sacred Scripture is a form of prayer called lectio divina.

1. Begin… Come, Holy Spirit 2. Read (lectio): Read the Mass Bible passage. Read it carefully, two or three times. Let it really soak in. Underline a word or sentence that stands out to you. 3. Meditation (meditatio). Ponder the words of the passage that stood out to you. Allow yourself to be moved by the Word of God to discover its meaning for your life. 4. Prayer (oratio). Speak to God about the passage. Be yourself. Allow time for silence to let God speak back to you. In this prayerful engagement with the Bible passage, you open yourself up to the possibility of contemplation. When it comes to life, the critical 5. HONORING OUR DECEASED FOLEY KNIGHTS: MEMORIAL MASS About 20 Foley Knights and family gathered for a Memorial Mass on Saturday, November 14th to honor our deceased Knights. We prayed for all the Foley Knights of Columbus who have passed into eternal life, especially for Robert T. Yancheson, Robert E. Eberline, Herman J. Hessling, Alphonse V. Tabaka, and Kenneth A. Daisy who passed away this past year. We were blessed to have Fr. David as the celebrant and fellow Sir Knight Deacon Zaid Chabaan joining in to assist with the Mass. A special thanks goes out to Mike Collins that served as the lector and John Pierce as the altar server. The fellowship continued with breakfast at Leon’s Restaurant. We are always thankful to be together and build our fraternity.

IN PREPARATION FOR THANKSGIVING As Thanksgiving approaches,. I am reminded of how thankful I am and how important it is to recognize and thank those around us. First and foremost, we should thank God for all the blessings He has given us especially during the difficult time our world is going through. We should thank God for giving us all the strength and courage to stand up for our priests and support our families, parish, and community. We should cherish the moments in our lives that bring us joy and be thankful for the blessing we have as we serve each other, our parish and community.
