Edwin Hawkins Presents the Matthew Sisters Album Download Zip Edwin Hawkins edwin hawkins presents the matthew sisters album download zip Edwin Hawkins. Edwin Reuben Hawkins was born on August 18, 1943 in Oakland, CA. He passed away on January 15, 2018. Edwin began playing the piano for church choirs at a very early age. In 1968, at the age of 25, Edwin’s choir recorded the album, of songs he wrote, titled “Let Us Go Into The House Of The Lord”. On this album was a song called “Oh, Happy Day”, which became wildly popular. It’s single sold over 7 million copies within one year! Edwin Hawkins talent for composing songs and arrangements for choirs is truly unmatched. A recurrent theme throughout the songs he has written is of love for God and each other, and compassion for humanity. His music styling is uniquely him; ask any modern gospel songwriter and they would probably admit that Edwin Hawkins directly influenced their songwriting. Edwin was an incredible pianist as well. He frequently directed his choirs from the keyboard. While listening to many of his songs, I can’t help but to sometimes focus on his piano playing, momentarily forgetting about the singers. Edwin seemed content working in the “background”. As a lifetime choir director and songwriter, he was often overlooked for the more visible singers. In fact, Edwin spent his life promoting new up-and-coming singers and songwriters. Edwin is responsible for many successful talents, including Thomas Whitfield, Daryl Coley, Donald Lawrence, Lashun Pace, Richard Smallwood, and many others. In spite of his being under-appreciated, Edwin singularly had a profound affect on all contemporary gospel music. I believe he is the greatest gospel choir director and song composer for choirs of all time! Edwin was also part of the Hawkins Family Singers. He is the eldest sibling and the leader of this super-talented family, including his brothers Walter and Daniel, sisters Lynette, Feddie, Carol, and cousins. They recorded several albums, illustrating a unique vocal sound with tight harmonies as only this family could. As previously mentioned, Edwin Hawkins spearheaded an effort to promote gospel songwriters and singers by founding the Music and Arts Seminar, which he and his brother Walter hosted each year beginning in 1983. Along with various classes taught by guests speakers, each annual seminar was highlighted by a mass choir recording of songs written by various guest songwriters. Each of these albums were produced by Edwin, and the majority of them also included at least one song written by him. Edwin Hawkins earned four Grammy Awards : 1970: Best Soul Gospel Performance – “Oh Happy Day” 1971: Best Soul Gospel Performance – “Every Man Wants to Be Free” 1978: Best Soul Gospel Performance, Contemporary – “Wonderful!” 1993: Best Gospel Choir or Chorus Album – choir director on Edwin Hawkins Music & Arts Seminar Mass Choir. In 2007, Hawkins was inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame. DISABILITY AWARENESS MUSIC & WORSHIP RESOURCES Sunday, October 18, 2009 Marcus D. Smith, Guest Lectionary Liturgist Minister of Music, Ark Church, Baltimore, MD and W. Patrick Alston, Sr., Lectionary Team Liturgist Worship Planning Notes The Church has failed to adequately accommodate and include its members who have disabilities. Beyond singing ministries offered by a few churches and wheelchair ramps in a few churches, little evidence can be found of our purposeful attempts to include all in the worship and activities of the Church. This must change! Technology now makes so much possible if we have willing hearts and minds. Many congregations now have within their ranks numerous persons who have Down syndrome or autism, who are blind or deaf, who use wheelchairs, or have other disabilities. Most of these persons are more than able to participate in the life of the Church if we assist them. Many of your church members have disabilities, as statistically one in five individuals has a disability. Present to the congregation a survey that includes questions about each member’s abilities, needs, and desires to be part of your church’s activities. Many people have disabilities that are not immediately apparent, such as vision difficulties, physical challenges, or mental illness, so it is important to ask everyone if his or her needs are being met. Do a thorough assessment of your programs and policies to determine if you have faithfully done all that you can do to include persons with disabilities and those who are differently-abled in the life of the church. This assessment should take no more than two months to complete and should include a plan for implementation, a budget, and timelines for each act that is to be implemented.

A conversation with Judith Casselberry, Charrise Barron, Mellonee Burnim, Joyce Marie Jackson, Randal Jacobs, and Matthew D. Morrison Performances by Marcelle Davies-Lashley, Jhetti, and Samuel Guillaume Sunday, December 10, 2017 3:00 p.m. Apollo Theater Front Cover: Mahalia Jackson; March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom 1957 LIVE WIRE: HOW I GOT OVER - THE SPIRIT OF GOSPEL MUSIC In 1963, when Mahalia Jackson sang “How I Got Over” before 250,000 protesters at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, she epitomized the sound and sentiment of Black Americans one hundred years after Emancipation. To sing of looking back to see “how I got over,” while protesting racial violence and social, civic, economic, and political oppression, both celebrated victories won and allowed all to envision current struggles in the past tense. Gospel is the good news. Look how far God has brought us. Look at where God will take us. On its face, the gospel song composed by Clara Ward in 1951, spoke to personal trials and tribulations overcome by the power of Jesus Christ. Black gospel music, however, has always occupied a space between the push to individualistic Christian salvation and community liberation in the context of an unjust society— a declaration of faith by the communal “I”. From its incubation at the turn of the 20th century to its emergence as a genre in the 1930s, gospel was the sound of Black people on the move. People with purpose, vision, and a spirit of experimentation— clear on what they left behind, unsure of what lay ahead.

―I Sing Because I‘m Free‖: Developing a Systematic Vocal Pedagogy for the Modern Gospel Singer D. M. A. Document Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Crystal Yvonne Sellers Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2009 Dissertation Committee: Loretta Robinson, Advisor Karen Peeler C. Patrick Woliver Copyright by Crystal Yvonne Sellers 2009 Abstract ―I Sing Because I‘m Free‖: Developing a Systematic Vocal Pedagogy for the Modern Gospel Singer With roots in the early songs and Spirituals of the African American slave, and influenced by American Jazz and Blues, Gospel music holds a significant place in the music history of the United States. Whether as a choral or solo composition, Gospel music is accompanied song, and its rhythms, textures, and vocal styles have become infused into most of today‘s popular music, as well as in much of the music of the evangelical Christian church. For well over a century voice teachers and voice scientists have studied thoroughly the Classical singing voice. The past fifty years have seen an explosion of research aimed at understanding Classical singing vocal function, ways of building efficient and flexible Classical singing voices, and maintaining vocal health care; more recently these studies have been extended to Pop and Musical Theater voices. Surprisingly, to date almost no studies have been done on the voice of the Gospel singer. Despite its growth in popularity, a thorough exploration of the vocal requirements of singing Gospel, developed through years of unique tradition and by hundreds of noted Gospel artists, is virtually non-existent.

  • 1 a Service of Healing
A SERVICE OF HEALING (for those suffering emotional distress, grief, divorce, and physical ailments) MUSIC & WORSHP RESOURCES Sunday, October 21, 2012 Michelle Riley Jones, Lectionary Team Liturgist Services of healing are not services of curing. Rather they “provide an atmosphere in which healing can happen.” (See The United Methodist Book of Worship, 613–614.) All healing is God’s work, and worship settings where God encounters people are intrinsically healing. —Daniel T. Benedict, Jr. Worship Planning Notes Healing services offer a personal and intimate encounter with God through worship and prayer. They generally include laying on of hands and anointing with oil. Prayers and anointing may be for the person present or as an intention for someone else. The oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit, and the application of oil to the sick is a symbolic act whereby the sick person is set apart to be ministered to by the Holy Spirit. The New Testament does refer to divine healings in many different places, but the anointing of the sick person with oil accompanied by prayer is unique with James. In James 5, there is a clear example given those seeking healing: For those seeking healing, they are admonished to: (1) pray (v. 13); (2) call for the elders (v. 14); and (3) confess their sins (v. 16). (This is not to suggest that the individual’s sickness is a result of some sin.) The elders of the church/those with the gift of healing are admonished to: (1) to pray over the sick (v. 14); (2) to anoint the sick with oil in the name of the Lord (v.

“Oh Happy Day” – The Edwin Hawkins Singers (1968) Added to the National Registry: 2005 Essay by Bill Carpenter (guest post)* Original label The Edwin Hawkins Singers If four-time Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter and choirmaster Edwin Hawkins had been a record label executive and had to pick his own radio singles, then his multi- million selling 1968 recording of “Oh, Happy Day” probably would not have become the global anthem that it became in the heart of the counterculture, civil rights and Jesus movements in the late sixties and early seventies. “My mother had an old hymnal and I had a knack for rearranging hymns,” Hawkins says of the song that first surfaced on his custom-made LP “Let Us Go into the House of the Lord.” The song was recorded at the Ephesians Church of God in Christ (COGIC) in his hometown of Oakland, CA to raise money for the church’s 40+-member youth choir to attend a convention. “‘Oh Happy Day’ was an old hymn and I rearranged it. It was actually one of the least likely songs to become a hit. There were some much stronger songs on there. We were going to hand-sell the album in the Bay Area. We ordered 500 copies. Lamont Bench, a Mormon guy, recorded that album on a two-track system. All 500 copies sold.” One of those albums fell into the hands of Abe “Voco” Keshishian, an influential DJ at KSAN 94.9 FM in the Bay area, who started to play “Oh Happy Day” on his “Lights Out San Francisco” blues and rock program in early 1969.
