Prof., PhD, University of Petroșani Abstract: Towards the last decades of the twentieth century, art historians and critics showed an increased interest in the women artists affiliated to the Pre-Raphaelite group; various studies approached subjects focusing on the social and professional roles played by the Pre- Raphaelite women artists or on the model and painter Elizabeth Siddall. The Pre-Raphaelite group included an important number of women artists, who were either sisters or daughters of the Pre-Raphaelite men artists, or wives of artists and writers. Art historians have shown that it is not wrong to refer to the women artists that were part of the enlarged Pre-Raphaelite group as to the “Pre-Raphaelite Sisterhood”; moreover, as far as the importance of their artistic production is concerned, the works that have been preserved are entitled to a critical reconsideration. Keywords: painting, Pre-Raphaelites, women artists, artistic training, artistic experience Between 1997 and 1998, the itinerant exhibition called Pre-Raphaelite Women Artists, organized by Jan Marsh and Pamela Gerrish Nunn and showed in Manchester, Birmingham, and Southampton, displayed an important collection of art works produced by the women artists, who were linked to the Pre-Raphaelite group. It has been stressed that the artistic achievements of the Pre-Raphaelite women painters have always seemed to be depreciated and considered inferior to those belonging to their male colleagues and to other important male artists. In order to give a positive and relevant perspective upon the importance of the Pre- Raphaelite women artists it is necessary to rely on the works signed by them; unfortunately, most of these works no more exist, due to various reasons: some of them were destroyed; Iulian Boldea, Dumitru-Mircea Buda (Editors) CONVERGENT DISCOURSES. The Pre-Raphaelite group included an important number of women artists, who were either sisters (Christina Rossetti, Rosa Brett, Emma Sandys, Joanna Boyce, Rebecca Solomon) or daughters (Lucy Madox Brown, Catherine Madox Brown) of the Pre-Raphaelite men artists, or wives of artists and writers (Elizabeth Siddall, who married Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Marie Spartali, who married the American artist and photographer William Stillman, Lucy Madox Brown, who married William Michael Rossetti). According to Elizabeth Prettejohn (2007, 71), citing Jan Marsh, it is not wrong to refer to the women artists that were part of the enlarged Pre-Raphaelite group as to the “Pre- Raphaelite Sisterhood”; moreover, as far as the importance of their artistic production is concerned, the works that have been preserved are entitled to a reconsideration. Elizabeth Siddall approached the Pre-Raphaelite group at the end of 1849, as a model for several figures painted by Hunt, Deverell, and Millais; she was Viola, in Walter Deverell’s Twelfth Night (1850), a red hair woman, in A Converted British Family Sheltering a Christian Missionary from the Persecution of the Druids by Hunt (1849-50), Sylvia, in Hunt’s Valentine Rescuing Sylvia from Proteus (1850-51), as well as Ophelia, painted by Millais (1851-2). She is said to have belonged either to the working class or to the lower middle class, but it seemed that she did not earn her existence as a professional model. She became involved with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and, by 1852, she was posing only for him and started learning to draw from him. They got married in 1860, but, unfortunately, two years later she died of an overdose of laudanum. Her work includes a series of drawings and water-colours that are considered to have set forth a new type of woman, who is “stronger and bolder” than the typology of early Pre-Raphaelitism and would dominate the later stage of the movement. The new woman figure is strong-necked, wavy-haired, and wide-eyed and has a more voluptuous counterpart in the Iulian Boldea, Dumitru-Mircea Buda (Editors) CONVERGENT DISCOURSES. Elizabeth Eleanor Siddall, Lady Clare, 1857, private collection The Pre-Raphaelite women artists are also considered to have approached group drawing activities as the members of the Brotherhood used to do. Among these women artists working together, Barbara Leigh Smith (Bodichon) and Anna Mary Howitt (Watts) were already leading personalities of the group, by 1850; they not only worked together, but also travelled abroad to study art, attempting at coming closer to the Brotherhood’s devotion to art and discussing ideas about the emancipation of women. 2. Barbara Leigh Smith (Bodichon), At Ventnor, Isle of Wight, 1856, private collection By mid-century, William Michael Rossetti repeatedly expressed his opinion on the importance of taking into consideration the work of the women artists and, through his exhibition reviews and contributions to a series of magazines, he drew attention on Siddall, Howitt, Boyce and Smith. Theorists also assert the idea that the Pre-Raphaelites’ rejection of academic conventions represented a step towards women’s emancipation, owing to the fact that they still could hardly benefit from academic education in art. Nonetheless, they seemed to display a common objective in the rendering of women figures, from mid-century onwards (for instance, Howitt’ s Boadicea – 1856, Boyce’ s Rowena Offering the Wassail Cup to Vortigern - 1856 or Siddall’ s Lady Clare - 1854-7), abandoning the usual graceful figure typology of the Victorian painting. 3. Anna Mary Howitt (Watts), Elizabeth Siddall, 1854, private collection Nowadays art historians have noticed that the previously mentioned manner of representing women, initiated by the Pre-Raphaelite women artists, resulted, during the 1860s, in paintings of “single female portraits”, showing imposing features, painted by both men artists (Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s Bocca Baciata – 1859, William Holman Hunt’s Il Dolce Far Niente – 1859-66, or John Everett Millais’s Esther – 1865) and women artists. The assertion differs from the one commonly supported by former authors, who considered that such portraits were exclusively made by the male Pre- Raphaelite artists, who presented women as temptresses. The new typology of women, made by the women artists associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, has been acknowledged as an attempt at representing forceful women meant to oppose to the ordinary Victorian taste for frail womanhood. Joanna Mary Boyce, Gretchen, 1861, Tate, London In spite of the small number of works preserved, of the lack of adjacent data, and of the marginal place commonly given to them by art history, the women artists connected with the Pre-Raphaelite men artists appear now as an important creative force exhibiting various training backgrounds, different personal experience or artistic practice. As well as their overall PRB brand each created an individual brand (sub-cognitive branding) that convinced the buyer they were making a wise investment. • Millais could be trusted as he was a born artist, an honest Englishman and made an ARA in 1853 and later RA (and President just before he died). • Hunt could be trusted as an investment as he was serious, had religious convictions and worked hard at everything he did. • Rossetti was a typical unreliable Romantic image of the artist so buying one of his paintings was a wise investment as you were buying the work of a ‘real artist’. 2 • The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (PRB) had only seven members but influenced many other artists. • Those most closely associated with the PRB were Ford Madox Brown (who was seven years older), Elizabeth Siddal (who died in 1862) and Walter Deverell (who died in 1854). • Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris were about five years younger. They met at Oxford and were influenced by Rossetti. I will discuss them more fully when I cover the Arts & Crafts Movement. • There were many other artists influenced by the PRB including, • John Brett, who was influenced by John Ruskin, • Arthur Hughes, a successful artist best known for April Love, • Henry Wallis, an artist who is best known for The Death of Chatterton (1856) and The Stonebreaker (1858), • William Dyce, who influenced the Pre-Raphaelites and whose Pegwell Bay is untypical but the most Pre-Raphaelite in style of his works.

SHERRY Dr. Sherry is Reference Librarian and Archivist at Princeton University In the 1860s Swinburne was as engaged in writing fiction as in producing material for his first published volume of poetry, Poems and Ballads. The manuscript of his novel Lesbia Brandon, however, never went into print during his lifetime because Watts-Dunton disapproved of its incestuous subtext.1 The opening pages of the novel, which was published only posthumously by Randolph Hughes in 1952, give a detailed description of two pairs of eyes, those of brother and sister. Their resemblance to one another is so uncanny as to make both seem sexually ambiguous, if not entirely androgynous: "Either smiled with the same lips and looked straight with the same clear eyes."2 The frontispiece to this article, Figure 1, a sketch by the artist Simeon Solomon, gives us some idea of what the idealized beauty of the characters in this novel was to be. The second illustration, Figure 2, shows the younger brother Herbert, recovering from a flogging, sitting with his sister who has turned to look at him from where she sits at the piano. Herbert's teacher Denham, it is explained in the narrative, enjoys flogging his teenage pupil to punish Herbert's sister indirectly for being sexually inaccessible to him — she is already a married woman.

    The Artist’s Household: On Gender and the Division of Artistic and Domestic Labour in Nineteenth-Century London Lara Perry Contemporary art and art histories are currently having a productive reckoning with the material demands of domestic work and parenting, considered as both a stimulus and constraint to art production. Resonating with the concept of ‘immaterial labour’ that has become prominent in explorations of the structures of contemporary art, feminist artists and critics have exposed the important gendered dimension of the immaterial and socialreproduction labour involved in the career of the contemporary artist. Art projects such as CASCO’s long-term programme (2009-) User’s Manual: The Grand Domestic Revolution and The Mother House project in London (2016) have picked up where Mierle Ukeles Laderman’s performance works of Maintenance Art in the 1960s and 1970s left off, and analysts have similarly refocused their efforts to include considerations of the gendered impact of parenthood on art production. For example, in her book Gender, ArtWork and the Global Imperative: A Materialist Feminist Critique (2013) Angela Dimitrakaki explored the impact of constant travel and around-the-clock schedule on women’s art careers; that this is more of an issue for mothers than for fathers was confirmed by a survey of Swedish artists made by Marita Flisbåck and Sofia Lindstrom (also published in 2013), which offered evidence that the careers of male artists benefit from a greater degree of freedom from the work of the household.1 All of this activity is associated with the investigation of contemporary rather than historical art practices.

THE UNIVERSITY OF YORK HISTORY OF ART DECEMBER 2009 2 ABSTRACT This thesis focuses on the life and work of the marginalized British Pre-Raphaelite and Aesthetic homosexual Jewish painter Simeon Solomon (1840-1905) after 1873.This year was fundamental in the artist‘s professional and personal life, because it is the year that he was arrested for attempted sodomy charges in London. The popular view that has been disseminated by the early historiography of Solomon, since before and after his death in 1905, has been to claim that, after this date, the artist led a life that was worthless, both personally and artistically. It has also asserted that this situation was self-inflicted, and that, despite the consistent efforts of his family and friends to return him to the conventions of Victorian middle-class life, he resisted, and that, this resistant was evidence of his ‗deviancy‘. Indeed, for over sixty years, the overall effect of this early historiography has been to defame the character of Solomon and reduce his importance within the Aesthetic movement and the second wave of Pre-Raphaelitism. It has also had the effect of relegating the work that he produced after 1873 to either virtual obscurity or critical censure. In fact, it is only recently that a revival of interest in the artist has gained momentum, although the latter part of his life from 1873 has still remained under- researched and unrecorded.

Siddal is often viewed by traditional art historians as a hysterical, laudanum-addicted muse, but the fictional representation of her life found in this novel provides a more complex account. By using first person and second person points of view in present tense, the reader is given a more vivid version of Siddal as she struggles with her addiction to laudanum, becomes absorbed in the process of creating art and lives her daily life.

    THE LOOKING-GLASS WORLD Mirrors in Pre-Raphaelite Painting, 1850-1915 TWO VOLUMES VOLUME I Claire Elizabeth Yearwood Ph.D. University of York History of Art October 2014 Abstract This dissertation examines the role of mirrors in Pre-Raphaelite painting as a significant motif that ultimately contributes to the on-going discussion surrounding the problematic PRB label. With varying stylistic objectives that often appear contradictory, as well as the disbandment of the original Brotherhood a few short years after it formed, defining ‘Pre-Raphaelite’ as a style remains an intriguing puzzle. In spite of recurring frequently in the works of the Pre-Raphaelites, particularly in those by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt, the mirror has not been thoroughly investigated before. Instead, the use of the mirror is typically mentioned briefly within the larger structure of analysis and most often referred to as a quotation of Jan van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait (1434) or as a symbol of vanity without giving further thought to the connotations of the mirror as a distinguishing mark of the movement. I argue for an analysis of the mirror both within the context of iconographic exchange between the original leaders and their later associates and followers, and also that of nineteenth- century glass production. The Pre-Raphaelite use of the mirror establishes a complex iconography that effectively remytholgises an industrial object, conflates contradictory elements of past and present, spiritual and physical, and contributes to a specific artistic dialogue between the disparate strands of the movement that anchors the problematic PRB label within a context of iconographic exchange.
