What a good turn-up from the TCCV. For more information on this event, check out the report in this Trumpet. In June we have New Member’s Day at the Sky High Restaurant in the Dandenongs. Refer to page 45 of the June Royalauto magazine for an article on the restaurant. An area will be set aside for TCCV Members so please advise the Events Coordinator, Peter Welten, if you are attending. Each adult will receive a $10 meal discount, and each car will have the $5 Parklands entry refunded. After the meal a photo shoot of the cars and those attending will take place in front of the Restaurant. I encourage all New Members in the last 12 months to attend. It is fast approaching our August AGM. The current Committee have all served for two years and I’m sure most of them will be looking for a break. If you are interested in getting involved on the TCCV Committee please contact any of the existing Committee Members. A reminder that David Ferguson’s emergency bonnet latches for the TR4 to TR6 are still available. If you have ever had the bonnet cable snap you will know that it is very difficult to open the bonnet and David’s latch enables you to do so. Contact Terry Roche if you would like one. The price is right – free. Thanks again David. On TV recently an RBT officer warned a driver of his illegal steering wheel. The issue being that the after- market wheel did not have a crash pad like the OEM wheel that it replaced. I have a SAAS wheel on the Stag and I have re-drilled the crash pad locator hole so that the original rubber crash pad can be fitted. See photos at right. Don’t miss the GM this month as Travis Osborne from The Mobile Tyre Shop is our guest speaker and rumour has it that he will be raffling a set of tyres for your Triumph! Check out our website for the latest updates and Photobucket for photos of recent events. Remember to fill out your Log Books and carry your licence. Graeme Oxley

5 2015 National Motoring Heritage Day Yarra Glen 17th May 2015 nce again it was a very early start to get Oto the start point at Chirnside Shopping Centre by 9:30am. Bit chilly around the ears with the top down as the weather forecast said it was going to be a nice day. At the meeting point there was the Rover Car Club, and Ford Car Clubs. We got away at the scheduled time of 9.30am and took the scenic route via the Lilydale Airport to Yarra Glen. The TCCV were allocated a nice grassed area near the grandstand opposite the Rover guys. First thing we did was set up and had a hot cuppa. This is the first time the TCCV had ventured to Yarra Glen as a Club organised event for the National Heritage Day. All monies collected from the gate went to the CFA. This day is organised by the AOMC. The overall quality of Classics on display on the day was excellent. The war time Army guys had an enormous display of a variety of vehicles from past wars. Everything was covered; including trucks, bikes and cars. The Local Kindergarten catered for the food and did an excellent job. Their hamburger with the lot was huge. I hope that they get the job again next year as I’m looking forward to another one! There were also some Trade Stalls. One of the guys, John Smith, who sells battery chargers, has been invited to provide a guest presentation at our July GM. I thought that they were excellent value compared to the C-Tec Chargers. All present agreed that we will put this firmly on the Events Calendar again next year as we all enjoyed a very nice day.

A few hard copies of the prior month’s minutes will be available at each monthly meeting for reference. Please email any feedback to the Secretary at [email protected]. 7 40 Years with a Triumph Renown t must have been around 1981 or so when Pam and I, in Adelaide, met another guest who Ihappened to own an RM Riley. I mentioned that I would have liked one of those, but they had become something of a classic and were rather expensive. But there was an alternative car which had been rather forgotten, and if one could find one it should be quite cheap. This was the immediately postwar Triumph razoredged saloon, which, in its later forms had a chassis and engine, so spare parts were still available. He said “Oh, I know a field where there are 4 of those”. So, of course, we had to go and have a look, and there were 2 Renowns and a couple of Vanguards. I picked what I thought was the better of the Triumphs, and, despite appearances, it was remarkably complete, even down to the driver’s handbook. After some soul searching and discussion with Pam I bought it for $400. It had to be transported to Sydney, the first of a long list of expenses which were to be incurred as time went by. It fairly rapidly proved that I would have to acquire skills I didn’t have, so I enrolled in the North Sydney TAFE in an evening panel beating course, with a whole group of like- minded people, and a senior teacher, Keith Nesbit, who was a real craftsman. Keith had acquired a wrecked Maserati, and was building a new body for it. When he had finished it was at least as good as the Italian original, all file finished, with absolutely no filler in it at all. Through the TAFE course I also met a small group who were talking of starting a Register for pre-war Triumphs, which was to include models up to the introduction of the TR2 in 1954. This happened, and we subsequently had meetings around NSW, eventually joining (or being taken over by) the more newly formed Standard & Triumph Car Club of NSW. Meanwhile, work went on at home and at TAFE very slowly replacing rusted parts of the body, and being grateful for the aluminium doors and bootlid. Nearly all the wood framing had to be replaced, much of it being shaped in three dimensions. I had also joined the Triumph Razor Edge Club in the UK, and they were helpful with some of the patterns. 8 40 Years with a Triumph Renown The engine was professionally rebuilt (with wet liners, bearings, valves, etc., it was virtually new) and I enrolled in a spray painting course at TAFE, but there was a world of difference between painting in a proper booth and trying to get a similar result in the garage at home. In about 2008 came a move to Melbourne, where our grandchildren live, and our joining of the TCCV. The car could now be trimmed inside (by Mikz), the interior woodwork revenered, and registered (fully, so I could drive it anywhere). I had fitted it with flashing indicators (to complement the semaphore indicators which few people recognise nowadays) and a high-level brake light. But seat belts remained an insoluble problem, since it had no “approved” anchorage points, and no-one was willing to take the risk if they should fail, and my family should get onto Slater and Gordon, etc. Fortunately they haven’t been required, so far. Since 2010 the Renown has been to Winton twice, Motorclassica, Temora, Ulladulla, Bundanoon, Grenfell, around Tasmania, Grafton (its longest distance so far) and Oberon. Also Jugiong last year, trying to make Goulburn, the only time it failed to make its intended destination. An elusive electrical fault the cuplrit. It’s had its share of troubles; it hates heavy traffic in summer. I shall never forget it overheating on Pennant Hills Rd., and with the aid of the NRMA changing the fuel pump to an electric one which I was carrying “just in case”. I later fitted a Kenlowe fan to supplement the usual one, which helps. More recently we have had recurrent starter problems. I have two starters, and recently an autoelectrician made “one good one” out of the two. But even that is rather dicey, which made me ring Kev Baker, the Lucas expert who gave a talk at the April General Meeting, and we’ll see what results from that. Graeme Johnson 9 The Best Triumph in Scotland (Perhaps) ust after lunch, we left Inverness on the JA9, the direct road up Scotland’s east coast to Brora, half way to John o’ Groats. The weather was bleak; windy, rain squalls and fog. The brick-shaped Fiat 500L was buffeted in the strong westerly cross wind. But we arrived safely at cousin David’s relief to be off the road. I knew about “The Highland Clearances” but brother Chris didn’t, so next day we went out in David’s 4x4 to see the evidence. It seemed impossible that the weather could deteriorate further, but it did. The single lane rough road through the Duke of Sutherland’s estate, the scene of brutal “relocations”, challenged the Ford Ranger. The views, when the clouds and Scottish mist lifted briefly, were spectacular and the remnants of Crofter’s homes burnt down on the Duke’s orders were gaunt reminders of earlier brutal times. To read more of this still emotive period of Scotland’s history, go to http://www.highlandclearances.co.uk/clearances/clearances_sutherlandclearances.htm. The track eventually meandered back to the A9 about 15 miles north of where it started at a hamlet called Helmsdale. Time for a pitstop – expel spent fuel and replenish with fresh coffee and scones. Pulling in from the other direction was a lorry with, would you believe, a red 1960 saloon! An amazing coincidence. Five minutes either side and we would not have seen it. Naturally, I approached and struck up the necessary conversation. Rob & Letitia Jenner, well known personalities in the UK classic car scene, introduced themselves and told me about the car. He had been trying to purchase it for the last 30 years from it’s first owner, a resident of the Isle of Skye. Only 40,000 miles from new. Completely original. Concours condition. Never restored. Perhaps the best original Triumph Herald saloon in the land. What a privilege to see it. In time, I expect Rob will write about the purchase on his ever popular Facebook page. Experts among us might be able to find the page and have its address added to a subsequent Trumpet. I searched unsuccessfully. Alan Andrews 10 From the Arch PI Fuel Pump Pressure (February 1988) hen the time arrived that my daughter had obtained her driving licence and we had Wto purchase her first car, the inevitable question arose, “What kind of car would you prefer?” Naturally she said, one with heaps of power, does 50 m.p.g. and not costing more than $1,000. Well, being a Triumph person I suggested that perhaps we should look for a P.I. as it would match her first criteria. Asking around as to what others who had owned and driven P.I.s thought of them, they all said “Hmm! They can be a real pain, especially in the hot weather, but if they are going ok, a real pleasure to drive.” Well, yours truly inherited all of the pain, that is, when it came to repair time, but little of the pleasure, for that belongs to my daughter who does the driving. This leads me to the rest of my story... Whenever a P.I. is not running properly, the first thing to check is if you have correct fuel pump pressure. The following is the modification that I did for a cost of $20 to enable instant checking of pump pressure. You’ll need: »» 1m of 3/16” annealed copper tube; »» a 0-200 lbs sq. in. Pressure gauge; and »» a 3/16” copper ½ inch B.S.P. UNION. To install, first remove the brass tee piece that contains the pressure relief valve and to which the petrol pump, metering unit, and return pipe to petrol tank, all connect to. Next, remove the pressure relief valve from the tee piece. Drill a 3/16. hole in the tee piece so that it penetrates into the fuelway, sweat in the 3/16” copper tube making sure not to obstruct the fuelway, reinstall the pressure relief valve making sure of cleanliness, and reinstall in the car. Bend and form the tube to allow installation of the pressure gauge in a suitable out of the way spot in the boot. With this installation, fuel pump pressure can be checked in an instant. 11 Notice of Change to By-Laws At the 25 May Committee Meeting, the Committee reviewed By-Law 11, Communication Protocols, and agreed that the majority of this By-law was redundant. As a result, the Committee approved: »» to relocate the final paragraph of By-Law 11, “All new and existing By Laws are to be published in the issue of “Trumpet” immediately following the passing of the By Law. These By Laws will also be placed on the TCCV website.” to the Correspondence Flows section of By-Law 9, Roles & Responsibilities; and »» that the remainder of By-Law 11 is rescinded in entirety. A copy of the rescinded By-Law 11 will remain available in the members only section of the website for reference until 31 July 2015. As a result of the above change, the Club has three By-Laws (numbered 6, 9 and 10). The Committee agreed this numbering to be ambiguous and has approved a renumbering of the remaining By-Laws as follows: »» By-Law 1 – Roles & Responsibilities »» By-Law 2 – Club Permit Scheme »» By-Law 3 – Conduct of the Election of the Committee of Management Notice of 2015 TCCV AGM
