LABOUR AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE CAR INDUSTRY. Ford strategies in Britain and Brazil Elizabeth Bortolaia Silva Thesis submitted for the Degree of PhD, Imperial College of Science and Technology University of London May 1988 LABOUR AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE CAR INDUSTRY Ford strategies in Britain and Brazil ABSTRACT This thesis looks at aspects of recent changes in international competition in the car industry. It examines the implications of the changes for the relationship between technology and work and it considers how strategies of multinational corporations interact with different national contexts. It is based on a case-study of the Ford Motor Company in its two largest factories in Britain and Brazil, Dagenham and São Bernardo. Chapter 1 describes existing theoretical approaches to comparative studies of technology and work, criticizes technological and cultural determinist approaches and argues for a method that draws on a 'historical regulation' approach. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 describe the long-term background and recent shifts in the pattern of international competition in the motor industry. In particular they look at important shifts in the late 1970s and 1980s and at Ford's changes in management structure and product strategy designed to meet these challenges. Chapter 5 considers recent debates on international productivity comparisons and presents a fieldwork-based comparison of the production process at Dagenham and São Bernardo. The description shows the importance of issues other than technology in determining the flexibility and quality of production. In different national contexts, 2 different mixes of technology and labour can produce comparable results. Chapters 6, 7 and 8 look at the national and local contexts of industrial relations in the two countries to throw light on the different patterns of change observed in the factories.

Not only for agreeing to be my mentor throughout my honors senior project, but for also suggesting valid points to make within my essay and final PowerPoint presentation that would better my research. I appreciate Professor Lillie for taking the time out of his schedule to meet with me during his office hours to discuss ideas and interesting facts that would be essential to crafting my essay. I would also like to recognize my cousin Neleze Meadows for helping me in narrowing down my broad topic to solely focusing on the evolution of Ford auto-motives. My cousin helped me chose an automobile company that has had the biggest transformation from beginning to end, and is continuously still growing in the 21st century. With the help of both my mentor Professor Lillie and my cousin Neleze Meadows, once again thank you for your input towards devising my Honors Mayor College senior project. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS Abstract..........................................................................................................................................

  • Diversity Brochure “Ready to Be Different”
Ready to be different “At Daimler, we don’t just build the best cars – we also offer the best models that enable individual solutions for the perfect balance between our professional and our private lives. The world we live and work in is undergoing unprecedented change. Creativity, flexibility and responsiveness are the top skills going forward into the future. We are working hard to create a culture fostering and enabling these competencies. A culture in which new ideas can florish – to shape the future of mobility for customers around the globe.” Wilfried Porth Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, Human Resources and Director of Labor Relations, IT & Mercedes-Benz Vans 10 Diversity is what drives us Imagine the following scene: An Italian, an Ethiopian, a Turk, a Chinese lady and a few Swabians meet... Jokes actually begin like this, but in our manufacturing plants this is how the early shift begins. And even if the scene might seem a bit contrived, you can actually encounter this at Daimler. We were one of the first companies in our industry to firmly establish Diversity Management in our strategy back in 2005. We don’t just tolerate diversity, we strive for it: About 289,000 people from 160 countries work side-by-side at Daimler. Our understanding of diversity includes much more than country of origin: In our plants you are just as likely to meet a designer in a wheelchair, a refugee doing a bridge internship and a transgender colleague from vehicle development, as a 16 year-old apprentice or a 60 year-old quality manager.

  • The Jensen Interceptor: Chrysler-Powered British Luxury
The Jensen Interceptor: Chrysler- Powered British Luxury Allan and Richard Jensen's auto business was started before World War II, which interrupted production until 1950, when their first Interceptor was made. At the time, they made Austin bodies under contract, and the first Interceptor resembled an Austin A40 (the Jensens built bodies for a string of cars that included the Volvo P1800, Sunbeam Tiger, and Austin-Healey.) The first Interceptor used a 4 liter Austin in-line six, and was produced in small numbers for over a decade. Jensen also used Nash Twin-Ignition Eight engines for a time, and the 1962 C-V8 used a Chrysler 361 B-block engine. A number of these early Jensens made their way to the US before and after World War II. The next version kept the basic C-V8 chassis, but changed styling. Initially, an in-house convertible design was planned, but chief engineer Kevin Beattie argued for an Italian flavor. Proposals were taken from different design houses, with Carozzeria Touring winning out with a fastback coupe incorporating a rounded tail, but that house was unable to finalize the design. Vignale, instead, provided prototype and initial production bodies, rendered in steel, on CV-8 chassis sent to them by Jensen. Turnaround was quick - about four months - so the new Interceptors could be shown in London in October 1966. Jensen later used the jigs and tools, which were sent by Vignale to the West Bromwich factory. The body had two doors, a low beltline, and fishbowl rear glass in a handsome 2+2 design.
