Hip-Hop Education Center to Launch Campaign Asking President Obama
For Immediate Release Press Contact: November 3, 2015 Lily Zaballos (510) 566-0814 [email protected] Hip-Hop Education Center to launch campaign asking President Obama to designate hip-hop as valuable public school education tool; hosts first annual awards for Hip-Hop Education pioneers NEW YORK — Today, the Hip-Hop Education Center (HHEC) announces that it will launch on November 11, 2015, the We The People for Hip-Hop Education in Public Schools, a petition requesting that the Obama Administration designate Hip-Hop culture as a valuable and uniquely American national treasure worthy of being taught and practiced in all K-12 public schools. “Carlos Mare and I are excited to share what we’ve been passionately working on for the past year, we know this will be game changer in education reform and will open up opportunities for millions of children.” said HHEC Founder Martha Diaz. For the past five years, HHEC has been conducting research, evaluating programs, and convening the teachers, teaching artists, scholars, researchers, activists, and music industry professionals to research and build a Hip-Hop Education movement. Research shows that Hip-Hop programing is making a difference with student engagement and academic outcomes. HHEC believes integrating Hip-Hop into public school education could help solve the U.S. education crisis: • Students are not being engaged in school. Approximately, 1.1 million American high school students drop out every year. That’s a student every 26 seconds – or 7,000 a day. • This education crisis poses direct negative consequences to poverty, crime, and economic conditions to our society. -
The Futurism of Hip Hop: Space, Electro and Science Fiction in Rap
Open Cultural Studies 2018; 2: 122–135 Research Article Adam de Paor-Evans* The Futurism of Hip Hop: Space, Electro and Science Fiction in Rap https://doi.org/10.1515/culture-2018-0012 Received January 27, 2018; accepted June 2, 2018 Abstract: In the early 1980s, an important facet of hip hop culture developed a style of music known as electro-rap, much of which carries narratives linked to science fiction, fantasy and references to arcade games and comic books. The aim of this article is to build a critical inquiry into the cultural and socio- political presence of these ideas as drivers for the productions of electro-rap, and subsequently through artists from Newcleus to Strange U seeks to interrogate the value of science fiction from the 1980s to the 2000s, evaluating the validity of science fiction’s place in the future of hip hop. Theoretically underpinned by the emerging theories associated with Afrofuturism and Paul Virilio’s dromosphere and picnolepsy concepts, the article reconsiders time and spatial context as a palimpsest whereby the saturation of digitalisation becomes both accelerator and obstacle and proposes a thirdspace-dromology. In conclusion, the article repositions contemporary hip hop and unearths the realities of science fiction and closes by offering specific directions for both the future within and the future of hip hop culture and its potential impact on future society. Keywords: dromosphere, dromology, Afrofuturism, electro-rap, thirdspace, fantasy, Newcleus, Strange U Introduction During the mid-1970s, the language of New York City’s pioneering hip hop practitioners brought them fame amongst their peers, yet the methods of its musical production brought heavy criticism from established musicians. -

Case 1:19-cv-25045-JEM Document 1 Entered on FLSD Docket 12/09/2019 Page 1 of 24 UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF FLORIDA MIAMI DIVISION CASE NO. 1:19cv25045 Vicky Cornell, individually, and in her JURY TRIAL DEMANDED capacity, and as the Personal Representative of the Estate of Christopher John Cornell a/k/a Chris Cornell, Plaintiffs, v. Soundgarden, a purported Washington General Partnership, Kim A. Thayil, Matt D. Cameron, Hunter Benedict Shepherd, Rit Venerus and Cal Financial Group, Inc., Defendants. ______________________________________________/ COMPLAINT Plaintiff, Vicky Cornell, individually and in her capacity as the personal representative of the Estate of Christopher John Cornell (collectively, “Plaintiffs”) through counsel, hereby files the following complaint against the defendants, Soundgarden, Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron, Hunter Benedict Shepherd, Rit Venerus and Cal Financial Group, Inc. (collectively, “Defendants”). I. INTRODUCTION “Everybody out for my blood, everybody want my percent … They just want to take what is mine, how much more can they get.” - Sweet Revenge 1. In 2009, Chris Cornell penned these lyrics about his former Soundgarden bandmates after they unlawfully (and unsuccessfully) attempted to deprive him of his rights in connection with the valuable musical works that he created for the band. Ten years later, and after Chris’ untimely passing, these lyrics hauntingly resonate as his former bandmates, once Case 1:19-cv-25045-JEM Document 1 Entered on FLSD Docket 12/09/2019 Page 2 of 24 again, have attempted to “take what is his” – or, more aptly, to steal from his widow and minor children. This wrongful conduct shockingly started shortly after Chris’ untimely death and ultimately forced his widow, Vicky Cornell, to bring this lawsuit. -
Audioslave - Revelations: Reigniting the Fire by Evan Parker, Staff Writer
2006-2007 http://www.elsegundousd.com/eshs/bayeagle0607/SeptemberP18Audios... Audioslave - Revelations: Reigniting the Fire by Evan Parker, Staff Writer Just four years ago, even before their self-titled debut album released, critics were quick to label Audioslave simply as "just another supergroup." Well they were right in some respects; they are a rock group, and they are super. Revelations is the follow-up album to 2005's Out of Exile, and is the band's third album release. Being that Out of Exile took nearly three years to complete leaves one to question Revelation's quality, however let me assure you that nothing here has been rushed and that the production value is on par with the group's previous releases. The unexpected brevity of the creation process of the album can be attributed to the group's steadfast dedication to their music. Audioslave is comprised of the common "four-piece" among rock groups, which means there is a vocalist, drummer, guitarist and bassist including backup vocals commonly performed by the instrumentalists. This setup has yielded unlimited success in today's music scene, however the quality of the group depends on the musicians' talent and of course, the producer. Making his first appearance with Audioslave is legendary music producer Brendan O'Brien. The production work he has done include several breakout albums from major artists of today and from the past including: Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Aerosmith, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against The Machine, Bruce Springsteen, The Offspring, Incubus and Soundgarden, among others. With a pedigree like this fused with extremely talented artists, one can almost guarantee the success of Revelations. -

From the Ashes of Two Great Bands, Audioslave Was Born. with Singer
Untitled Document http://www.elsegundousd.com/eshs/be04-05/juneaudios.htm From the ashes of two great bands, Audioslave was born. With singer Chris Cornell, guitarist Tom Morello, drummer Brad Wilk, and bassist Tim Commerford, they have created a monster of a band. Following up their very successful 2002 self-titled debut, Audioslave is delivering another awesome rock album. Audioslave formed in our home Los Angeles, California in 2001. When political band, Rage Against the Machine used their music to protest the actions of the government broke up in late 2000 when lead singer Zech De La Rocha announced he was leaving the band. Morello, Wilk, and Commerford need a singer and rumors started to float around that ex-Soundgarden lead singer Chris Cornell would take that place. In 2001 they did form a band together. Many people thought it would sound like Rage Against the Machine, and some thought it would sound like another Soundgarden, but they were wrong. Although Morello kept his flare for the weirdest and cool sounding guitar solos, and Cornell kept his melodic quiet to a loud singing voice the band has its own unique sound. This new album Out of Exile still holds onto the sound Audioslave made, but there have been many changes, many good changes. In this album Morello, Wilk, and Commerford have really started playing up to their potential. Morello as more defined guitar riffs and licks, and his solos have only gotten better. Drummer Wilk has sped up on his drumming and has added a lot of new beats and fills. -
