February 20, 2017 1 Introductory Remarks The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is one of the oldest ecclesiastical jurisdictions in the United States. It was erected as a diocese in 1808 and elevated to an archdiocese in 1875. It has long had the reputation of being one of the most staunchly “Catholic” and conservative dioceses in the country. The Archdiocese also has the very dubious distinction of having been investigated by not one but three grand juries in the first decade of the new millennium. The first investigation (Grand Jury 1, 2001-2002) was prompted by the District Attorney’s desire to find factual information about sexual abuse by Catholic clergy in the Archdiocese. The second grand jury (Grand Jury 2, 2003-2005) continued the investigation that the first could not finish before its term expired. The third grand jury investigation (Grand Jury 3, 2010-2011) was triggered by reports to the District Attorney that sexual abuse by priests was still being reported in spite of assurances by the Cardinal Archbishop (Rigali) after the second Grand Jury Report was published that all children in the Archdiocese were safe because there were no priest sexual abusers still in ministry. Most of what the three Grand Juries discovered about the attitude and practices of the archbishop and his collaborators could be found in nearly every archdiocese and diocese in the United States. Victims are encouraged to approach the Church’s victim assistance coordinators and assured of confidentiality and compassionate support yet their stories and other information are regularly shared with the Church’s attorneys in direct violation of the promise made by the Church.

    The Holy See ADDRESS OF HIS HOLINESS JOHN PAUL II IN THE BASILICA OF ST FRANCIS OF ASSISI Assisi, Italy Sunday, 5 November 1978 Here I am in Assisi on this day that I have wished to dedicate specially to the Patron Saints of this country, Italy; a country to which God has called me in order that I may serve as St Peter's successor. Since I was not born in this land, I feel more than ever the need of a spiritual "birth" in it. And therefore, on this Sunday, I come as a pilgrim to Assisi, at the feet of St Francis, the Poverello, who wrote Christ's gospel in incisive characters in the hearts of the men of his time. We cannot be surprised that his fellow citizens have wished to see in him the Patron Saint of Italy. The Pope, who, owing to his mission, must have before his eyes the whole universal Church, the bride of Christ, in the various parts of the globe, particularly needs the help of the Patron Saint of Italy in his See in Rome; he needs the intercession of St Francis of Assisi.And so he arrives here today. He comes to visit this city, which is always a witness to the marvellous divine adventure that took place between the end of the twelfth and the beginning of the thirteenth century. It is a witness to that surprising holiness that passed here like a great breath of the Spirit. A breath in which St Francis of Assisi participated, as well as his spiritual sister St Clare and so many other saints born from their evangelical spirituality.

    231 Pregledni znanstveni članek (1.02) BV 68 (2008) 2, 231-256 UDK 272-784-726.3(4-11)«194/199« Bogdan Kolar SDB The Priestly Patriotic Associations in the Eastern European Countries Abstract: The priestly patriotic associations used to be a part of the every day life of the Catholic Church in the Eastern European countries where after World War II Com- munist Parties seized power putting in their programmes the elimination of the Catho- lic Church from the public life and in the final analysis the destruction of the religion in general. In spite of the fact that the associations were considered professional guilds of progressive priests with a particular national mission they were planned by their founders or instigators (mainly coming from various secret services and the offices for religious affairs) as a means of internal dissension among priests, among priests and bishops, among local Churches and the Holy See, and in the final stage also among the leaders of church communities and their members. A special attention of the totalitarian authorities was dedicated to the priests because they were in touch with the population and the most vulnerable part of the Church structures.
