Dez edições no espaço de uma década são bem a medida do sucesso e da consistência de um encontro científico que, sublinhe-se, tem um caráter pioneiro em Portugal. Recordar estes dez anos é, aliás, um exercício que permite vislumbrar os méritos e as potencialidades do IJUP, enquanto evento capaz de proporcionar oportunidades de comunicação, divulgação e debate científico aos estudantes da Universidade do Porto. Importa, desde logo, salientar a crescente participação dos estudantes no IJUP e o cada vez maior envolvimento de docentes e investigadores. Nesta 10.ª edição, por exemplo, mais de 1.300 estudantes de licenciatura e mestrado assumiram o desafio de revelar os seus trabalhos científicos. No total, o IJUP’17 contou com 230 apresentações orais e 170 apresentações em poster. Todos estes projetos científicos foram apresentados numa dinâmica semelhante à de um congresso internacional, sob o escrutínio de uma plateia idónea e exigente constituída por docentes, investigadores e estudantes. Para além desta capacidade de envolver a comunidade académica, o IJUP revela de edição para edição uma maior diversidade, complexidade e sofisticação nas questões científicas sujeitas a análise e debate. Reportando-me uma vez mais a esta 10.ª edição, podem ser referidas, a título de exemplo, investigações tão díspares como as dos efeitos do exercício físico no tratamento da doença de Alzheimer, da regulação do acesso e utilização da internet, dos fatores preditivos de preconceitos contra imigrantes ou da vivência da sexualidade por pessoas encarceradas. No fundo, o êxito do IJUP decorre da própria evolução da investigação científica na Universidade do Porto, também ela em crescendo de qualidade e multidisciplinaridade. É bom lembrar que a Universidade do Porto é o maior produtor de ciência do país, sendo responsável por mais de 23% dos artigos portugueses indexados na Web of Science. De resto, o campus universitário integra unidades de I&D+i com qualidade científica reconhecida nacional e internacionalmente. Daí que os nossos estudantes possam desenvolver as suas investigações num ecossistema científico de excelência, interdisciplinar e com network internacional. Considerando tudo isto, impõe-se um agradecimento a todos os que colaboraram na organização do IJUP’17, em especial à Sra. Vice-Reitora para a I&D, Profª Maria João Ramos, que superiormente coordena o projeto, e ao seu staff de apoio. Devem igualmente ser enaltecidas as empresas e instituições que apoiaram o IJUP’17, destacando-se neste particular o Santander Universidades. Sebastião Feyo de Azevedo Reitor da Universidade do Porto oral sessions 12431 | "Landscape as experience. Sea: Immersion and Voyage" Patrão, Joana C. J., Faculdade de Belas-Artes, Portugal This project is the outcome of a practice-based artistic research motivated by the inquiry of Landscape as category and the relationships with Nature it implies. The research addresses different levels of landscape’s awareness by discussing the way they relate with the creation of images. In this context, Landscape shows the potential of translating and triggering experiences, making it possible to explore and enact through artistic practice different relationships with Nature. Based in the "Aesthetics of Engagement" by Arnold Berleant, framed by the phenomenological approach of Merleau-Ponty and his notion of "Reciprocity", we discuss an "Urgency of Landscape" as proposed by Augustin Berque implying that we must re-establish our relations with the nature, respecting its cycles. These notions are addressed through different symbolic conversations and through processes of creating images that consider Nature’s agency. Landscape appears as a convergence between Nature as referent and the embodiment of its processes and logics. The body that must be involved in these relationships functions as trigger, vehicle and natural material. Through different media we encounter different relational possibilities. Oscillating between painting, drawing, photography, video, the use of matrices and indexical evidences, we pursue a mutable way of research, one that deals with different levels of enactment, based in the Sea both as motif of analysis and origin of its creative fluidity. Our involvement with the Sea is based in two different approaches: the Immersion and the Voyage. Using both movements of submersion and expansion as creative frameworks, the project is presented in its double context: a practice developed in the natural space as well as in the studio, blending these experiences in the construction of new landscapes, with a new engagement. Finally we question how artistic experiences could contribute to grow an environmental commitment, a new way of engaging the world. Reception of waves 12417 | "Women singing Portugal: a journey through Portuguese pop women with stops in identities" Ferreira, Patrícia, Faculdade de Letras, Portugal The project aims to explain and understand how the songs, artistic creation and musical trajectories of 15 Portuguese women musicians can be revealing, identifying and reflecting processes of reconstitution and identity reconstruction in Portuguese society at the beginning of the 20th century. In the specific case of our research object it is important to know the Portuguese identity/identities expressed in the songs and in the musical trajectories of artists of the feminine genre, of different musical approaches in pop scope, since the 1980s to nowadays. We start from the idea that culture, namely music, is an influence and influenced by the context in which it is created, and in this way allows us to make a very rich reading of the social reality and the context in which these creators move. Concomitantly, we start from the perspective that the discourses of these creators and their songs are also a very important representation about social reality. It is in this context that we are interested to understand how the choice of a specific fragment of pop music creators (female genre) allows us to capture a singular reality - female creation / performance, with the intention of trying to perceive the Portuguese reality in a broader way and which is the place that woman occupies there. A key issue in our research focuses on the identification of women and cultural productions as central elements for the (re)interpretation of changes in Portuguese society. It is in this context that we propose to analyze the role played by female artists in the context of pop (artistic, social) over the last decades, in what way the Portuguese pop music in the female interprets and influences the female condition in Portugal. Multiple ecomorphs are present in the stick insect fauna from Papua New Guinea, including the tree lobster, spiny, and long slender forms. While ecomorphs have long been recognized in phasmids, there has yet to be an attempt to objectively define and study the evolution of these ecomorphs.

S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The size of an 526 families and every currently described extant hexapod order24 organism may affect interactions both with other organisms and with (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. 1). We combined this dataset with the environment1,2, it scales with features of morphology and physi- backbone hexapod phylogenies25,26 that we enriched to include taxa ology3, and larger animals often have higher fitness4.

The ecological and genetic mechanisms that determine Phasmatodea reproductive biology are poorly understood. The order includes standard sexual species, but also many others that display distinct types of parthenogenesis (tychoparthenogenesis, automixis, apomixis, etc.), or both systems facultatively. In a preliminary survey, we analysed Wolbachia and Spiroplasma infection in 244 indi- viduals from 28 species and 24 genera of stick insects by bacterial 16S rRNA gene amplification. Our main aim was to determine wheth- er some of the bacterial endosymbionts involved in distinct reproductive alterations in other arthropods, including parthenogenesis and male killing, are present in phasmids. We found no Wolbachia infection in any of the phasmid species analysed, but confirmed the pres- ence of Spiroplasma in some sexual, mixed and asexual species. Phylogenetic analysis identified these bacterial strains as belonging to the Ixodetis clade. Other bacteria genera were also detected. The possible role of these bacteria in Phasmatodea biology is discussed.

La Familia Heteropterygidae ( orden: Phasmatodea, suborden: Areolatae, Zompro 2005) Por Sergi Romeu 1- Introducción: En esta familia Heteropterygidae encontramos los insectos más peculiares que podemos imaginarnos, llenos de espinas por todo el cuerpo y con un camuflaje de formas y colores típico del hábitat de sotobosque de las selvas húmedas. Hojas secas, líquenes, musgos, cortezas, pequeñas ramas, brotes, astillas...toman vida al intentar leerlos en este artículo. Principalmente estamos hablando de especies de distribución Asiática presentes en Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo y muchas otras islas de Indonesia. 2- Clasificación: Durante los últimos años, varios autores han estudiado la sistemática del orden phasmatodea. Principalmente se trata de revisiones teóricas, basadas en descripciones de los ejemplares tipo depositados en los museos de todo el mundo. Paul Brock trata el grupo que nos interesa dentro la familia Bacillidae, como una sub-familia llamada Heteropteryginae, dividiéndola a su vez en cuatro tribus: Datamini, Anisacanthini, Obrimini y Heteropterygini. La mayoría de especies de esta familia Bacillidae no tienen alas, exceptuando algunas especies con rudimentos alares o alas reducidas dentro de nuestra sub-familia Heteropteryginae. Desde la familia Bacillidae, la clave taxonómica para llegar a la sub-familia Heteropteryginae es según P. Brock (1999): - 1) Antena mas larga que el fémur delantero. Parte II: La Familia Heteropterygidae ( orden: Phasmatodea, suborden: Areolatae, Zompro 2005) Por Sergi Romeu Sungaya inexpectata, Zompro 1996 Clasificación: según Zompro (2005): Order: Phasmatodea. Suborder: Areolatae. Superfamilia: Bacilloidea. Familia: Heteropterygidae. Subfamilia: Obriminae Esta especie es bastante reciente y hasta la fecha sólo se conocen hembras. De tamaño mediano, aspecto poco espinoso pero robusto y de colores oscuros miméticos con troncos y raíces. Descripción de la hembra: Longitud: 80 mm. Cabeza: curiosa protuberancia en su parte posterior coronada con pequeñas espinas. Largas antenas que superan la longitud de las patas delanteras. Ojos de color claro. Tórax: pro-tórax corto, de forma cuadrada. Sin espinas. Meso-tórax alargado sin espinas, con forma triangular. Meta-tórax ancho, con cuatro bultos dispuestos dos a dos paralelos dispuestos en el dorso. Una franja ancha de color más claro atraviesa todo el cuerpo longitudinalmente. Sin alas ni rudimentos alares. Abdomen: sin espinas, acabado en ovo-positor. Patas: extremadamente delgadas, sin espinas. Distribución: Filipinas. Cría en cautividad: Altura mínima del terrario 40 cm. Esta especie se reproduce por partenogénesis desconociéndose la presencia de machos. Se alimenta de zarza. Como los otros miembros de la familia, prefiere el lugar más húmedo del terrario. Entierra los huevos, por lo que pondremos un recipiente de tierra o turba de unos 5 cm. de espesor en el interior del terrario . Los huevos son muy curiosos, como si fueran pequeñas vasijas. La tapa o opérculo por donde eclosiona la ninfa neonata es plana. Su desarrollo es más rápido que los anteriores, cerrando el ciclo en un año. No tiene ningún mecanismo de defensa aparente.

Peruvian Phasmids in the Manu National Park Robert Bradburne, 26 Royal Avenue, Tonbridge, Kent, TN9 2DB, UK. Abstract The article describes a five night trip to [he Manu National Park in South Eastern Peru in September of 2000. Phasmids were found at three different sites within the reserve between 500 and 1000 m in primary and secondary (disturbed) rainforest. The most common stick insects encountered were similar in appearance to the genera Ocnophiloidea and Pseudophasmn, with a few other larger species also found. No collections were made and therefore no formal identifications have been possible. Key words Phasmida, Peru, Manu, South America. I travelled to Peru in September 2000 with a group of six other friends. As part of this trip we had booked a six-day trip with Manu Expeditions (of Michael Palin's "Full Circle" and"Andes to Amazon" fame) to explore the world heritage zone of the Manu Biosphere Reserve.
