Applications may be inspected free of charge at the traffic area office in Leeds by any person who carries written authorisation to act in that capacity. Objections against published applications may be made in writing by a Chief Officer of Police, a local authority, a planning authority or a prescribed trade union or association within 21 days of the date on which notice of an application is published in Applications and Decisions. Objections must be made either on the grounds that any of the requirements listed in Section 13 of the Goods Vehicles (Licensing of Operators) Act 1995 are not met and/or that a nominated operating centre will be unsuitable for use as such. A copy of the objection must be sent by the objector to the applicant at the same time that it is sent to the Traffic Commissioner. The onus of proof in terms of the grounds on which an objection is lodged lies with the objector. You may fax a copy of your objection to 0113 2488521 but please note that you must send the original signed document through the post. Classification of Operator Licences – There are three classes of licence: A Restricted (R) licence authorises the use of a goods vehicle on public roads in Great Britain for the carriage of the licence holder’s own goods in the course of his trade or business. The licence holder cannot carry goods for other people for hire or reward; A Standard National (SN) licence allows the licence holder to carry both his own goods and goods for other people for hire or reward, on public roads in Great Britain. He can also carry his own goods on journeys abroad; A Standard International (SI) licence allows the licence holder to carry both his own goods and goods for other people for hire or reward. These activities can be undertaken both in Great Britain and on international journeys. These printed copies will preserve the information they contain, even though the originals be lost by carelessness, theft or fire.

In 1913 the Committee took on the form of the Fabian Research Department led by figures including Beatrice and Sidney Webb, George Bernard Shaw and Robin Page Arnot. Originally the department took the form of a forum for competing theories of industrial organisation but then took on the function of providing a service for trade unions by collecting information for them rather than about them and in 1918 its membership was broadened outside of the Fabian Society and became the Labour Research Department. Many influential figures were involved in the Labour Research Department including Barbara Drake, Joseph Rowntree, Leonard Woolf, Archibald Fenner Brockway, Emile Burns, Harry Politt and Noreen Branson. The Labour Research Department carried out investigations into many of the major issues affecting Britain and the wider world, including women, trade unions and strikes, imperialism, the rise of Fascism and the outbreak of war, housing, racism and education. The results of these investigations were often published in their journals, which included Labour Research, Fact Service and Bargaining Report. The Department were one of the chief critics of the Fascist Movement and published a number of publications including Who Backs Mosley? which exposed the Blackshirt Movement and They Helped Hitler which highlighted how the Chamberlain government had supposedly been involved in German rearmament.

  • A New History of the SPOFFORTH Family", Compiled by Capt
    DOCUMENT BACKGROUND The following is a reproduction of a document originally created by Captain Ralph Spofforth (1881-1950), born in Knottingley, Yorkshire, UK. He is further described on pages 36-37 of the document itself. While Capt. Spofforth lived much of his life in South Africa, he spent a good deal of time in England during the 1940’s, which is when he did most of the research for this document. The document was never formally published, but several typescript copies have circulated among various members of the Spofforth/Spofford family throughout the United Kingdom and a few in the United States. Most family members who have examined the document have determined that, while there maybe some errors, particularly in typing, in general it provides a fairly true and accurate view of the family history in England during the period covered. Ralph was known to be a meticulous researcher by those who knew him. Much of the works consists of entries from Parish Records and wills from probate files examined by the author. In 2006, one of the typescript copies of the document was scanned, painstakingly proofread and edited by Alex Spofforth of Sussex, UK; Peter Spawforth of Yorkshire, UK; and Bob Spafford of New York, USA. The Microsoft Word documents thus created were then combined with this page of background material and converted into the final Adobe PDF format. While reference to this document is not a substitute for on-site research or use as a primary research document, it is hoped that it will be helpful to those persons researching the English history of the family and those families connected by marriage.
