Be close to those who mourn and give them comfort of human affection and strength to continue in their own lives. THE BISHOP OF LEEDS IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE the appointment of The Revd Michelle Petch, currently Assistant Curate in the Benefice of Holy Trinity and St Jude, Halifax as Vicar of St Matthew, Rastrick (LEP) and St John Rastrick in The Huddersfield Episcopal Area. Michelle will be licensed on 23rd February 2021 at 7.30 pm by The Bishop of Huddersfield at St John’s, Rastrick. Her church's website says : DAVID WILLIAMS Unfortunately, due to number restrictions involved with Covid, only invited guests will be allowed to attend the funeral of David Williams. If you have not been invited by the family please do not go to the funeral, even if you only intend standing outside on the Crematorium drive. (All people invited have already been informed). The family have asked me to inform you that there will definitely be a celebration of David's life at St John's at (hopefully) sometime in the not too distant future. They are really saddened by having to tell people they cannot attend the funeral, but hope everyone will understand that they cannot break the law. Graham Readshaw A JOURNEY THOUGH ADVENT There will be ADVENT ZOOM meetings for four weeks starting next week i.e. w/c 30 November. You are able to choose which evening is most convenient for you either Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays. They each start at 7.30 pm and will just last for one hour. Rather like our Lent evenings. The content of three evenings each week will be identical, and if you find you cannot make one of the days during the week you can ‘turn up on ZOOM’ at one of the other meetings during the week. Everyone is very welcome!!! The evenings will start off with our considering the things we have around us, as Christmas draws near.....Advent Calendars, wreaths, mince pies and puddings, cards and gifts. And then we will be considering a short and relevant Bible passage, and then looking in detail at a particular carol - who wrote it and what does it mean to us? Each of the four evenings will have a different focus: Waiting, Hearing, Calling and Meeting. Please let Alan Hoggard, at St John’s, know if you would like to join in. Ring or text him on 07756035591 This will be a lovely way to prepare for Christmas, and during such a strange and worrying year. We can still meet, albeit on ZOOM!! Bring your favourite cuppa and let's be together! FOR ADMINISTRATIVE MATTERS contact the Church Wardens David Marshall (718182) or Hilary Cartwright (537399) Website e-mail Alan Hoggard Carol Singing – Yes, it’s officially allowed! There will be a 15 minutes’ Carol Sing in the church car park starting half an hour before our Midnight Mass and Christmas Morning services. So, come early, wrap up well, bring a torch and prepare to sing your heart out. Parish Christmas Invitations – For obvious reasons there have been no Rastrick Churches Christmas Cards this year. Instead, Alan, Julia and John have produced limited quantities of a Parish Christmas leaflet which includes our online and live services including the Carol Singing. We thought this would provide a great opportunity for others to know we’re in business. So tomorrow, in church, we shall provide enough for each person to give, or post, 5 leaflets to neighbours, family or friends. The inside page looks like this:- MISSIONS AND CHARITIES We have recently decided to allocate most of the money in our pot equally to the following charities. Each will receive £400. 1. Overgate Hospice 2. Forget-me-Not Children’s Hospice 3. Christian African Relief Trust (CART) for the 2020 Trees for Christmas Appeal 4. Medecins-sans-Frontieres 5. Children’s Society in lieu of Christingle. Should anyone wish to add to any of the Missions and Charities donations by cash, cheque or bank transfer, please speak to Cherry, Margaret E, Cyndy or Oriel for details. Thank you. GLEDHOLT MALE VOICE CHOIR IS INVITING YOU TO A VIRTUAL CHRISTMAS CONCERT which will be available to watch on YouTube from 7.15pm on December 15th 2020 Soon after lockdown, during April, Gledholt Male Voice Choir started rehearsing ‘on line’ using Zoom and, although they could not sing as a choir, these rehearsals kept the choir together remarkably well. The success of this venture was due to the vision and hard work of Jane Robertson, their accompanist. To start with Jane persuaded friends and family to record each of the four parts of well-known choir pieces which were then sent to the relevant choir members, by email, so that they could sing along with them at home. Then the choir was encouraged to record their own parts and to submit them to Jane who combined them to make a recording of the full choir. At the beginning of September, now that they have become veterans in recording, the choir set about rehearsing and recording Christmas songs in order to create a programme for an ‘on line’ Christmas concert. Therefore, Gledholt Male Voice Choir’s Christmas Concert will be ‘live streamed’ via YouTube on Tuesday 15th December starting at 7:15pm. It can be accessed on YouTube by searching for ‘Gledholt Male’ or from their website www.gledholt.org.uk Also, you can even watch it via your Smart TV in the comfort of your arm chair. If for any reason you are unable to watch the concert on the 15th, it will be available for the whole of the Christmas period and will remain there until the 6th January. GMVC is also inviting you to contribute to a fundraising campaign to help the choir continue the excellent work they are doing within the community. Please go to this link. gf.me/u/y85qai Hope you can join us. Roger Ellis Choir Chairman THE CRISP PACKET PROJECT The Crisp Packet project uses empty foil lined crisp packets and chocolate wrappers, in fact any type of foil lined packet, to create Bivi sleeping bags and survival sheets for those living on the streets. Members of the Yorkshire Soroptimist clubs have taken on this challenge and are asking for donations of empty foil-lined packets to help them make as many as possible. I hope to leave a bag at the back of St John's church for any donations you may have.
