19 killed in Sudan road accident

KHARTOUM: Nineteen people were killed when a Sudanese passenger bus and a truck collided, in the latest mass-cas- ualty toll on the nation’s roads, state-linked media reported yesterday. The crash, which also injured 17, happened south of the Nile state capital Ed Damer, the Sudanese Media Centre (SMC) reported without specifying when the crash occurred. SMC, which is close to the country’s security apparatus, quoted police as saying “the accident hap- pened because a tanker truck crashed into a bus carrying 35 passengers including children.” The report did not say whether flooding played any role in the crash. Heavy rains this week have inundated roads in the capital Khartoum and other parts of the country. Last month a speeding bus and a minibus collided in eastern Sudan, killing 22 people, official media reported at the time. AFP

Compromise in Egypt Cartoon Arts International / Syndicate

HERE are signs of a compromise in Egypt. It’s too early to predict what would happen, but the very fact that both sides showed a willingness to step Japanese FM’s Nazi comments Tback from the brink is in itself good news. Two factors have been responsible for a thaw: first, pressure from Western envoys who aware of the huge consequences of a deterioration in the situation; and second, a realisation hark back to a dark past on both sides that more bloodshed will not help their cause and make a solution more difficult, if not impossible.
