It was a rare win for Anthony at Domain Stadium (Subiaco Oval). “I’ve got my love of footy back and while Melbourne is a great city While playing for North Melbourne he ran onto the ground seven and we loved living there, we were always keen to raise our family in times and only won one of those clashes. It was pretty hard to win over here.” A brutally honest Anthony told the Football Budget that he had always wanted to play AFL but admits that in his first senior years at East Fremantle, he made his league debut in 2006, that he didn’t have the best work ethic. “I was lucky at that stage of my career that I had someone like Shane Woewodin guiding me and he helped lift my training and my game to the level I needed to get a chance to play AFL,” Anthony said. “That’s the kind of advice I can pass on to the young guys in the WAFL now. You need to be doing more than what everyone else is doing if you want to take your game to that next level. I can also remind them that I got drafted when I was 21 so if you get overlooked as a teenager there are still opportunities out there if you are prepared to put in the work. “There is plenty of talent out there, you just need to find a way to put your name up there in front of the recruiters.” A stress fracture meant Anthony, who was selected by North Melbourne at No.43 in the 2008 AFL draft, didn’t make his debut until Round 13 in 2009. He played 10 games in his debut AFL season and later suffered a dislocated shoulder. His best year with the Kangaroos came in 2012 when he played 19 games and averaged 25 disposals. “Season 2012 was my best year,” he said. “It was one of the very few years when I haven’t had a season disrupted by injury. The only down side was losing that final to the Eagles. “It is still the only senior final I have played, including my time in Geraldton, so I’m keen to play some with the Sharks.” by Sean Cowan 6 Collectables

During 2015, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home.

It’s not often that collectables turn up from the early years of football in this State. Occasionally, something from the years immediately prior to WWII surfaces, but anything earlier than that is a real rarity. So, when I received a call from over the summer asking me to help identify an urn that had turned up at an op shop in Gingin, I was somewhat intrigued. The urn was dated 26th August 1912 and was awarded to Jack Howson by the Fingall Rovers “as a token of esteem”.
