Evolutionary trends in the epithecate scleractinian corals EWA RONIEWICZ and JAROSEAW STOLARSKI Roniewicz, E. & Stolarski, J. 1999. Evolutionary trends in the epithecate scleractinian corals. -Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 44,2, 131-166. Adult stages of wall ontogeny of fossil and Recent scleractinians show that epitheca was the prevailing type of wall in Triassic and Jurassic corals. Since the Late Cretaceous the fre- quency of epithecal walls during adult stages has decreased. In the ontogeny of Recent epithecate corals, epitheca either persists from the protocorallite to the adult stage, or is re- placed in post-initial stages by trabecular walls that are often accompanied by extra- -calicular skeletal elements. The former condition means that the polyp initially lacks the edge zone, the latter condition means that the edge zone develops later in coral ontogeny. Five principal patterns in wall ontogeny of fossil and Recent Scleractinia are distinguished and provide the framework for discrimination of the four main stages (grades) of evolu- tionary development of the edge-zone. The trend of increasing the edge-zone and reduction of the epitheca is particularly well represented in the history of caryophylliine corals. We suggest that development of the edge-zone is an evolutionary response to changing envi- ronment, mainly to increasing bioerosion in the Mesozoic shallow-water environments. However, available palynological, phylogenetic and geological evidence indicates that the history of plant terrestrialization is much longer and it is recently accepted that land floras, producing different types of spores, already were established in the Ordovician Period. -

Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 66, pp. 17-43. Oslo 1986. ISSN 0029-196X. Ryazanian black shales in a core dose to the eastern margin of the Trøndelag Platform offshore Hel geland, northern Norway are overlain by a condensed latest Ryazanian-Barremian sequence of grey and red Utvik Formation equivalent marls and mudstones. Palaeontological studies show that the 'Late Cimmerian Unconformity' represents only a minor hiatus in the Upper Ryazanian. Upper Val anginian-Lower Hauterivian beds seem to be absent. The generalized model for the North Sea and adjacent areas (Rawson & Riley 1982) thus seems applicable to more northern areas, as would be ex pected if sedimentation was mainly controlled by eustatic sea level changes. The section is compared to the Lower Cretaceous sequence at Andøya, the stratigraphy of which is revised. N. Aarhus & J. (Receiwd for publication June 21, 1949.) The main object of the present paper is to give a description of plant remains from type localities in Yeringian beds at Lily dale, Victoria. The principal locality (Hull Road, Lilyclalc) was referred to in a prnvious paper (Cookson 1935, p. 146) and subsequently a list of the main types collected there was recorded ( Cookson 1945). This collection now includes remains referable to or at least comparable ·with Sporngonites, Zostaophyllmn, )�aJTltL"ia a11d Iledeia. It will be supplemented by rnference to speeimens from two additional outcrops, one neaT Lilydale and the other at Killara, about 7l miles further east. The occurrence of plants iu this area is of special shatigraphical interest. For many years, the Y eringian series was believed to belong to the Silurian period, but the position assigned to it within that range of time varied according to the author (see Gill 1942, Table I). Chapman and Thomas (1935), when defining the Victorian Silurian succession, correlated the YeTingian with the Upper Ludlow of Britain. Beneath it they placed the Melbournian division (Lower Ludlow), whilst the basal series, the Keilorian or Lower Silurian, was correlated with the Llandoverian of the British succession. Later Thomas (1937), in dealing with Silurian 1·ocks of the Heathcote area, pointed out that detailed work was necessary to determine "how much of the Devonian is included in the Yeringian.'' In 1938 Shirley noted that "the Yeringian contains at least one fauna similar to that of the Baton River series" (Lower Devonian of New Zealand). -

Biological Sciences Late Ordovician – Early Silurian terrestrial biotas of Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania: an investigation into the early colonization of land (284 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Gar W. Rothwell An early phase in the colonization of land is documented by investigation of three fossil compression biotas from Passage Creek (Silurian, Llandoverian, Virginia), Kiser Lake (Silurian, Llandoverian, Ohio), and Conococheague Mountain (Ordovician, Ashgillian, Pennsylvania). A framework for investigation of the colonization of land is constructed by (1) a review of hypotheses on the origin of land plants; (2) a summary of the fossil record of terrestrial biotas; (3) an assessment of the potential of different continental depositional environments to preserve plant remains; (4) a reevaluation of Ordovician-Silurian fluvial styles based on published data; and (5) a review of pertinent data on biological soil crusts, which are considered the closest modern analogues of early terrestrial communities. -

A large collection of the Ordovician Tergomya and Gastropoda, discovered and gathered by Jacques Destombes during his research of the Anti-Atlas (Morocco) , is described. Of 23 identified species, characteri sing the cold Mediterranean Palaeoprov ince, 10 are common to Bohemia (the Barrandian Area), four to France (the Montagne Noire), and 10 are endemic to Morocco. Ascertained genera of Tergomya include Sinuitopsis, Cyrtodiscus, Quasisinuites, Carcassonnella, Tachillanella, and Thoralispira; ascertained genera of Gastropoda include Sinuites, Selesinuites, Tritonophon, Bucanopsina, Tropidodiscus, Lesueurilla, Ptychonema, Clathrospira, Lophospira, Nonorios , Holopea?, and Loxonema? New subfamily and taxa of Tergomya named herein are Carcassonnellinae subfam. n., Baltiscanella gen. n., Tachillanella tafilaltensis gen. et sp. n.; new taxa of Gastropoda are Sinuites destombesi sp. n., Atlantophon maider gen. et sp. n., Ptychonema marocanum sp. n., Clathrospira amouguerana sp. n., and Lophospira'l debganensis sp. n. Important results concern morphology (muscle attachment areas in Sinuitopsis, Selesinuites, and Sinuites; secondary shell deposits in Sinuites destom besi; presence of a sinus on the keel in Lesueurilla prima), taxonomy, functional morphology, palaeoecology, mode of life, shell repair, and palaeobiogeography.
