- 3 - Festival of Talents Leighton Church Saturday & Sunday — 13/14th July The beautiful Victorian church in Leighton, staged this festival with a plethora of skills and hobbies on display including tapestries, embroidery, model railways, knitted items, paintings, a history of the church, poetry writing, a walking exhibition, a Llanfair Ginny exhibition, ancient maps, stylish modern sewn items, choral music, a raffle and so much more. Also the much admired white angel carved by Georgina Naylor (the daughter of John Naylor who built much of Leighton in the 1840’s- Pauline Evans, John Markwick, Margaret Landgrebe, Jim Evans & Rev Bill Rowell 1860’s) was decorated for the occasion. An exhibition of recent belfry improvements was on display.A team of eager bakers erved delicious cream teas to all throughout the weekend. The exhibition ended with a ‘Songs of Praise’ service on Sunday 14th at 6.30pm. Below is just sample of the many splendid exhibits. SPORTS INTERNATIONALS IN THE VILLAGE Good luck to Kathy Pearce who continues to compete with the Welsh Ladies Bowling Team and no doubt has a very busy summer.

Also congratulations to another international athlete from the village, Fergus Stevens, who plays hockey for the Welsh junior team and has just competed and won in Lithuania. After a little more travelling Fergus is taking up a place in Nottingham University to continue his career and we wish him every success.

HAPPY 97TH birthday to Doris who will be celebrating with her family on Friday 13th September. - 6 -

We had a BINGO evening in Leighton Village Hall back in June when Rod and Di Stevens stepped in at the last minute to help and saved the day for the Village Hall and School. It was a much enjoyed evening and raised £294 split 50/50. The next session will be held on Wednesday evening 6th October at 6.30pm in the village hall so see you all there!

Leighton Village Hall Coffee Morning and Art Exhibition held on Saturday 6th July was very well attended with the hall decked out with many wonderful paintings done by the children depicting Leighton. The sum of £272 was raised so well done to everyone who worked hard to put it on and gave us all an entertaining morning in the village and special congratulations to all of the children. As more scarecrow ladies continue to appear across the Welshpool area to celebrate 100 years of the Women’s Institute, there is more good news with a local branch re-forming. After a couple of trial runs, the Long Mountain WI has attracted sufficient interest to give it another go with their first ‘proper’ meeting held last week. Members were introduced to laughing yoga by Charlotte Woodford to make for an enjoyable evening and whet the appetite for more The next meeting is at 7.30pm on September 18 in Leighton Village Hall with an open invite for more ladies to attend. The new club’s officers are: Deb Evans, president, Elaine Newson, secretary & Jane Tibbott, treasurer. Regional chairman, Jean Hurrell, said that it was good news for the movement and timely with the centenary celebrations in full swing. To celebrate the 100 year of WI every WI has been asked to make a scarecrow so here is ours! `Sally`—you can find her at the bottom of Long Mountain at the end of the Hope Road adjoining the B4388 , if you haven't already seen her call by and see her!( that's if someone hasn't taken a fancy to her and taken her home !) Long Mountain WI has really taken off now and all the members are enjoying the no jam or Jerusalem approach ! Plans for the LVH ALL WEATHER PLAYING FIELD are progressing well and the groundworks will be starting soon. This much anticipated facility will be the largest undertaken in the village for several decades and will prove a great asset for future generations.

Saturday 28th Sept at 7.30pm in the village hall The LVH team are busy organising this event and there will be a light buffet for all the eager quizzers and a draw. Bring along your own drinks and glasses and we will provide the entertainment and sandwiches. Tickets are £6 each available from Lesley (Tel: 01938 228 162) and LVH Committee members. As requested we are continuing our successful Bingo Bonanza in partnership with Leighton School. This time it’s on Wednesday 9th October at 6.30pm so please come along and join in the fun – all ages most welcome.

OPEN GARDENS. Next July we are planning to have a Leighton Village Open Gardens walk so get those seed packets bought from Alexander’s Shop and get planning and planting for your biggest bloomers EVER for 2020! This will be for Village Hall funds and there will be more on this to follow in the coming newsletters.

WINTER WONDERLAND. LVH and Leighton Church are together planning a Winter Wonderland Weekend including a Concert on Friday 6th December featuring ‘The Castle Belles’ and local artists starting at 7.30pm in Leighton Church. The church which will be fully decorated for the occassion and open all that weekend with the proceeds being split 50/50 between LVH and the Church.
