In many ways this event is unique, involving an 85 mile race-walk around the 17 parishes of the island, within 24 hours. What started as a five year commitment for an outlay of a mere £500 has grown in stature and popularity, attracting walkers from all over the UK and abroad. In 1990 there were only 155 starters but in 2009 there will around 1,700 participants. All at Clerical Medical are delighted with this long and successful association and the company is fully committed to the community of the Isle of Man. PARISH WALK A Welcome from the Race Director Welcome to the 2009 Clerical Medical Parish Walk. The Parish Walk provides a unique challenge to all the entrants and it has captured the imagination of the Manx folk over the years. This year the race has attracted an all-time record entry of 1620. Ahead lies a test of stamina and endurance over 85 miles and 17 Parish Churches all which must be passed before returning to Douglas Promenade within the 24 hour time limit.

  • 1 OUTSTANDING MEMORIES of the PARISH I've Been Meaning to Put Pen to Paper Or Fingers to Keyboard Since the End of June This Y
OUTSTANDING MEMORIES OF THE PARISH I’ve been meaning to put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard since the end of June this year to share a few memories of the Parish with the club members in what I consider some of my favourite and most outstanding moments that have left an impression with me for nearly 50 years. I never saw Stan (Cas) Cleator win the first walk in 1960 though my first proper memory of the Parish goes way to back to the mid 1960’s when Henry and Jimmy Harvey and Leece Kneale were the fast boys. Those were the days when the race started outside the Villa Marina on a Saturday around teatime, usually in May and many competitors used to walk in ordinary shoes and trousers and there were no recognised feeding stations enroute. One of my earlier memories was in 1967 when my then mentor/coach in race walking Albert Johnson was the first walker to break the 16 hour barrier recording 15hrs 54mins 51seconds and after going off course slightly around the Bride area. Albert had only lived in the IOM (from Sheffield) for a couple of years and he didn’t know that part of the Island well. Mind you quite a few Manx people don’t know that area of the Island well either. Another talking point in the early 1960’s was the retirement of Herbie Cannell (Rosie Crellin’s father) at Lonan. A popular athlete who later became a publican at the Hawthorne. I’m afraid Herbie took a lot of stick about that and was never allowed to forget it but it was all taken in good humour.

FRONT COVER: Early stages - many happy walkers taking part in the 2011 Scottish Widows Parish Walk. (1574: Anita Quayle, 528: Ben Mowle, 619 David Wilding, 1141 Rebecca McDowell.) Event Main Sponsors: Scottish Widows. Event Timing Sponsors: Manx Telecom Editorial The 51st edition of the Scottish Widows Parish Walk has continued to grow this year, with record entries again. Congratulations to everyone, whether you took part, supported a walker, helped with the organisation or marshalled. Without YOU the event could not take place! There may have been moments when you said “Why am I doing this?!” or even “Never again!” However, the blisters heal, the pain soon fades, and the memories of the experiences you gained and the people you met will remain with you. Especially when people look at you with awe when they find out you took part in such an event. More and more people are now seeing competitive walking events as an enjoyable and healthy activity. A much larger proportion of walkers are now also being attracted to the Isle of Man just to take part in this event, as its fame spreads further afield. Many people are already planning and looking forwards to their 2012 Parish Walk. Come back next year… You may or may not want to try the full distance but you will certainly miss all the fun if you are not entered. And don’t forget the End to End Walk, where you can walk the entire length of the island with hundreds of other people, taking place in September! If you enjoyed the Parish Walk, perhaps you might enjoy other walks too.
