Adults and immature stages of Amblyomma dubitatum were found on Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris, Sus scrofa, Axis axis and Myrmecophaga tridactyla. Larvae and nymphs of A. dubitatum were collected on Bubalus bubalis, Lepus europaeus, Monodelphis dimidiata and on the rodents Cavia aperea, Scapteromys aquaticus, Oligoryzomys flavescens and Akodon azarae. One male of Amblyomma nodosum was associated with M. tridactyla; specimens of Haemaphysalis juxtakochi were found on A. axis, S. scrofa and Mazama gouazoubira; and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus was detected on Blastocerus dichotomus. Adults of Amblyomma triste were collected on B. dichotomus, S. scrofa and H. hydrochaeris, while immatures of this tick were recorded on M. dimidiata, A. azarae, S. aquaticus, O. flavescens and H. hydrochaeris. The relationship between birds (Aves) and hard ticks (Ixodidae) was analyzed for the 386 of 725 tick extant species whose larva, nymph and adults are known as well as their natural hosts. A total of 136 (54 Prostriata= Ixodes, 82 Metastriata= all other genera) are frequently found on Aves, but only 32 species (1 associated with Palaeognathae, 31 with Neognathae) have all parasitic stages feeding on birds: 25 Ixodes (19% of the species analyzed for this genus), 6 Haemaphysalis (7%) and 1 species of Amblyomma (2%). The species of Amblyomma feeds on marine birds (MB), the six Haemaphysalis are parasites of non-marine birds (NMB), and 14 of the 25 Ixodes feed on NMB, one feeds on NMB and MB, and ten on MB. The Australasian Ixodes + I. uriae clade probably originated at an uncertain time from the late Triassic to the early Cretaceous. It is speculated that Prostriata first hosts were Gondwanan theropod dinosaurs in an undetermined place before Pangaea break up; alternatively, if ancestral monotromes were involved in its evolution an Australasian origin of Prostriata seems plausible.

([email protected]) Abstract Migratory birds disperse engorged ticks across Canada during northward spring migration. During our tick-host study, we collected a nymphal Amblyomma rotundatum Koch, from a Veery, Catharus fuscescens (Stephens) (Passeriformes: Turdidae), at Long Point, Ontario, Canada. In the laboratory, this nymph molted to a female in 44 d. The infestation of A. rotundatum on a Veery constitutes a first tick-host record, and a new distributional record in Canada. Notably, this novel collection is the northernmost record of A. rotundatum and the first record of this species on a bird anywhere. We provide formidable evidence that migratory songbirds can carry A. rotundatum thousands of kilometers during northward spring migration. From an epidemiological perspective, A. rotundatum is known to harbor bacteria that are pathogenic to humans. Health-care providers should take note that migratory songbirds can transport A. rotundatum into Canada, and be alert that this tick species signifies an unforeseen public health risk to humans.
