Tættere På Australske Tame Impala 2013-06-13 11:32 CEST Tættere på australske Tame Impala Det australske band Tame Impala spillede sidste år i et udsolgt Lille VEGA. Fredag den 9. august vender de tilbage til København og går på scenen i Store VEGA. Det sker med support fra ingen ringere end den fremadstormende amerikanske rocktrio Merchandise. Her kan du lære Tame Impala – og det stærke support-navn – lidt bedre at kende. Psykedelisk rock fra Perth Tame Impala er hovedsageligt forsanger og sangskriver Kevin Parkers projekt. Men med de øvrige bandmedlemmer om bord bliver Tame Impala til en kvartet. Bandet fra Perth i Australien har opnået stor succes siden deres meget anmelderroste fuldlængededebut Innerspeaker, der udkom i 2010. Her blev psykedelisk 60’er-rock blandet med iørefaldende drømmepop og en god fornemmelse for klassisk rock, der også afslører Parkers forkærlighed for The Beatles. Efterfølgeren til Innerspeaker udkom sidste år med titlen Lonerism. Her formåede Parker efter mange kritikeres mening at overgå sig selv med et endnu mere helskøbt album, hvor psych-rocken både slog hårdt, som på singlen ”Elephant”, men hvor der også var mere afdæmpede melodier som ”Why Won’t They Talk to Me” og ”Feels Like We Only Go Backwards”. Se denne video, hvor Tame Impala optræder med “Elephant” live hos Later… With Jools Holland: Se video på YouTube her Lonerism blev skabt i samarbejde med producer Dave Friedmann, der især er kendt for sin indflydelse på lyden hos The Flaming Lips og Mercury Rev. Noget af den drømmende stemning, disse bands står for, kan bestemt også genkendes i Tame Impalas lyd på Lonerism. 2012’s bedste album Lonerism fik høje placeringer på mange internationale og danske musikmediers lister over årets bedste album 2012. Her valgte engelske NME og danske Undertoner blandt andet albummet som årets bedste internationale album, og hos Pitchfork fik det en fjerdeplads og i The Guardian en sjetteplads på årslisterne. Få en fornemmelse af den psykedeliske, melodiske rock, bandet er blevet rost for, med “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards” og den tilhørende video: Se video på YouTube her Trioen Merchandise med på tour Med på deres tour har Tame Impala et yderst stærk supportband, nemlig den fremadstormende rocktrio Merchandise. Trioen stammer fra Tampa i Florida og er på vej til det store gennembrud efter deres andet album, Children of Desire, der udkom sidste år, fik flotte ord med på vejen af Pitchfork, NME og Spin. Lyt bl.a. til nummeret ”Time”. Bandet spiller en blanding af punket støjrock og melodiøs pop med psykedeliske elementer. Dagen efter koncerten i VEGA står Merchandise desuden på scenen i Voxhall i Aarhus som hovednavn. Trioen har nyt materiale på vej, og det kan høres live i Store VEGA, inden Tame Impala går på scenen fredag den 9. august. Som huvudsaklig låtskrivare och producent i rockbandet Tame Impala har han skapat sig ett ”signature sound”. Eftersom många gillar hur Parkers trummor låter har det förts långa diskussioner angående produktionsprocessen. Uppsatsen ämnade att ta reda på hur Parkers produktion sett ut och vilka ljudliga artefakter det är som utgör hans sound. Resultatet visar på en väldigt nedskalad inspelning. Ofta med ett enkelt vintage-trumkit och tre till fyra mikrofoner, dämpade skinn samt en hel del kompression och distorsion. Soundet kan beskrivas som väldigt energiskt, mycket tack vare just hård kompression och distorsion. Parkers sound känns igen även utanför Tame Impala. Trummorna upplevs i många fall som mycket mer än bara ett rytminstrument. Uppsatsen förklarar hur okonventionella produktionsprocesser kan ge upphov till originella ljudliga karaktärer, vilket i slutändan kan anses en positiv konsekvens.     DARK LONERISM: SELF-SABOTAGE, APATHY, AND UNCANNY WHITENESS by CHRIS BOLLINI (Under the Direction of John Wharton Lowe) ABSTRACT Commenting on the literary trope of loneliness that can spark action or epiphany, Robert A. Ferguson accounts for the many “fables” in America about the “solitary adventurer and its social variant, the self-made man,” by suggesting individualism can be the “answer as well as the problem to feeling alone.” This dissertation explores a similar paradox: how can an intense self- interest, aloof to the struggles of others, become the answer as well as the problem to feeling disempowered? In a certain strain of American literature from the Great Depression through the early post-war period, depictions of the aloof and brooding male protagonist ironicize as much as they romanticize the angst of ensuring one’s integrity within a chaotic world. The irony exposed in such texts inevitably becomes layered and multivalent because the presence of a loner- protagonist creates a schism between external reality and his troubled, obsessive mindset. As this study argues, the loner-protagonist may stubbornly fantasize about opting out of society and seeking confirmation of his exceptional status, yet he can only test this sense of the world by deconstructing his preferred state of apartness, surveillance, and hypervigilance. Despite being tormented by his concessions to normativity as he enters the crucible of social life, the loner- protagonist capitalizes on the promise of control inherent in white privilege, or what this project conceptualizes as the masked persona of uncanny whiteness. By exposing the performative undercurrents to an otherwise austere and seemingly unknowable archetype, Dark Lonerism encompasses both a healthy skepticism of the loner-protagonist’s self-isolating pose and a sympathetic interrogation of the pathological psychology underlying his many acts of self- sabotage.
