DEAR READERS … Welcome to our Spring magazine – we hope you enjoy reading it. There are many lovely services and events during Lent and Easter as well as our Rogation Walks to Guiting Power in May. If you can, please do join us for these – it would be lovely to see you.

Katrina and Karen

FROM OUR MINISTERIAL TEAM … It seems ages ago that we were singing carols at the top of our voices and remembering Jesus as the Baby in a manger but now we move into Easter. (I must make a note on my shopping list to buy a lemon for Shrove Tuesday)! How do you think of Easter? I asked myself that question and five words came into my mind – suffering, sadness, love, life and hope. Over the next few weeks we will be going through these emotions as we follow, with Jesus our loving Saviour, through His experiences. Through these weeks we will also be led through different ways of approaching Him through prayer; we will eat together and worship together and thank Him for being willing to go through all this for us. The second question I would ask of you and myself, - what difference will it make to my life? Only we ourselves can answer that, but one thing we all know is that we will experience those five emotions at some time during the future and I pray that we may be comforted and strengthened to know that Jesus has already trod that path before us and knows our every need and shares our every experience whether it be suffering, sadness, love, life or hope. Praise His Holy Name. May God bless your journey. Every blessing to all the churches from us all, With love and prayers, Jean, Sue and Katrina

NEWS FROM THE WIDER CHURCH ... It’s a Vicar’s Life! I wonder if you have seen the recent BBC series entitled ‘A Vicar’s Life’? I was a little nervous as I watched the first episode, as it began with the words: “Vicars, pillars of the community, as English as tea and cake and cricket on the village green, but times are changing. Congregations are aging and faith is fading… So today’s Vicars are working hard to stay relevant”. I thought there was a risk we might be heading into a negative programme - with a narrow view of the church as being out of date, self- focussed and irrelevant. However, I was happily surprised. The programme showed, through the lives and ministry of four Vicars, that the Church is still doing masses to connect with human life around us and engage with the spirituality that is a part of who we each are. The churches we saw are doing a great deal to offer to their communities, they were engaging with people at the most exciting and troubling moments in their lives, and they were thinking creatively about their buildings and traditions. We saw Christians living out their faith in ways which touched on some of the social issues of today (homelessness, immigration, loneliness, dementia) and in a way which changed their communities for the better. If you haven’t watched yet, do have a look on iPlayer – I’d say it’s worth a watch! Katrina Scott

Rector to be Installed as a Canon of Gloucester Cathedral Katrina has recently been invited by Bishop Rachel and Dean Stephen Lake to become a Canon at Gloucester Cathedral. This is an honorary position that celebrates the work Katrina does here and in the Deanery and also helps to build better links between our villages and our Cathedral. Katrina will be Installed as a Canon on Sunday 13th May at 3pm at the Cathedral, and all are welcome to join her for the service.

NEWS FROM THE PEWS ... Farmcote Robert Lee-Warner, our oldest and longest inhabitant, died in December. He built Lynes Barn, Farmcote in 1951 and farmed here ever since; Anne married him some 72 years ago and still breeds her horses. Robert was a many sided character; sailing was his main passion which enthusiasm he shared with Harry his son. An early member of the small Avon Sailing Club and Commodore in 1967 he always encouraged young sailors; one of these won an Olympic Bronze medal and the Fastnet race – by this time the Club had become well known. In 1991 Robert was presented with an award for his ‘spirit and sport’ by Princess Anne at the Royal Yachting Association. It is recorded that during a crossing to Holland, Robert was knocked overboard but by grabbing a lanyard he was towed along for some distance, being more worried by losing his underpants than his life! He was known as modest and generous to his neighbours and in his great encouragement of young people. His many other interests included shooting, the Medici Gallery and later on photography. We will miss him. Over 80 joined us to sing Christmas Carols; a record collection for St Faith’s was taken of some £480 for Crisis at Christmas and the Church. Peter Loveday

Upper Slaughter Let’s hope that as you read this the sun is warming up, the birds are waking us up in the mornings, and everyone has now recovered from all the colds and flu. Do look at the dates for the Lent Soup Lunches at Upper Slaughter Village Hall (all Thursday’s) starting at 12.30pm, hope to see you there, or at one of our church services. It is never too early to advertise the Fete and this year it will be on Saturday 14th July. Liz Gibson

HOLY WEEK AND INTO EASTER Holy Week is one of the most intense and special times in the church year. In these days and services, we journey with Jesus through the highs (as he is triumphantly received into Jerusalem), and into the lows – of his betrayal, rejection, agony and death. We travel through this time remembering that God travels with us through the highs and lows of our own lives, and that he is with us in times of suffering as well as in times of joy. The tragedy of Good Friday is of course then defeated by the joy when Easter Sunday comes – and we discover again that Jesus is resurrected and brings new life for all. The rejoicing at the end of the week doesn’t remove the reality of the suffering, but it does transform it, as we learn afresh that God promises good to us. Do join us on this journey through this special week if you can.

Temple Guiting How lovely it is now to see the snowdrops and aconites coming out to herald the Spring after this long miserable Winter. Thank you to Avril, Robert and Peter for all the work they put in to make the annual Village Quiz once again such a great evening, and a complete sell out. A few weeks later came our traditional and ever popular Carol Service which was delightful and very well supported and a wonderful start to Christmas. The Church was nearly full on Christmas morning and it was a very inspiring and happy occasion. It is lovely to see Sue Cox looking so well and getting back into harness again! Audrey Mather

Naunton Christmas in St Andrew's was as joyful as possible with the Candle-lit Carol Service, the Crib Service and the Candle-lit Midnight Christmas Communion, all of which were well attended. Since then, with the normal pattern of services, the weekly coffee shop, the weekly Mustard Seeds, the monthly rural cinema showings and assorted village meetings hosted in the church during the renovation of the Village Hall, St Andrew's is being well used and its band of loyal helpers is being kept busy. Looking forward, St Andrew's is preparing for Easter when at 11am on Good Friday there is to be children’s crafts and activities (with hot cross buns and coffee) followed at 12noon by a Family Service and on Easter Day there will be 9.30am Holy Communion with Hymns. Then, starting on 18th May, there will be the first of this year's concerts run by Naunton Music. Information about all activities in St Andrew's is publicised as widely as practicable and is available through the contact numbers printed elsewhere in this magazine. Diana Woolley

Guiting Power The Cheery Club had their usual treats at Christmas – a good lunch at the Hollow Bottom and a splendid tea the next week in the Village Hall. Mike has got us a star which is on the wall of the Church and when lit it makes the altar look lovely. Thanks Mike. Thanks also to Janet and Edward Boote for once again giving us a beautifully decorated Christmas tree. Katrina took the Carol Concert where we had many splendid readers and Nick kept the children happy on Christmas morning. Many thanks to them both for giving us such a good start to Christmas festivities. We are sorry to hear of Marion’s fall and hope she soon recovers. Dorothy Watson

Cutsdean Apart from the Christmas services, thankfully it has been relatively peaceful at this end of the Benefice in the last three months. However our Carol Service and Christmas Day Holy Communion have been described by some as the “best ever”! The Carol Service was attended by a near record number, and was made extra special as we welcomed Sue back to lead the service after her very challenging time away through illness. The quality of the festive decorations was matched by the quality of the music and singing and the contribution from the young- and not so young - readers. After the service we were welcomed back to Liz, Alan and Edie’s home for the traditional drinks and nibbles. Many thanks to them for their generous hospitality and to all who helped to make the service such a memorable one. On Christmas Day a further 30 plus souls filled the Church for a very spirited service of Holy Communion with carols led by Nick. The occasion was further enhanced by the highly colourful attire of three of the congregation! Mark Evans

Lower Slaughter 2017 is now all but a distant memory. Here at St Mary’s we have wonderful memories of our 150-year celebrations and our Christmas services were all such a joy and well attended by villagers and visitors. As you all read this Spring is hopefully on the horizon and one word I feel sums up this wonderful season – “Hope”. Hope for our gardens and allotments as they come back to life after winter. The snowdrops have been a magic carpet on our verges, followed by the crocus and the wonderful flower of hope the golden daffodil. What joy I feel when I see these and also the spring lambs out in the fields – Winter is almost behind us. Hope that longer and sunny days will soon be with us, hope for our village fetes that they will be fruitful. Hope for all our wedding couples as the wedding season approaches. We are now in the Church season of Lent, one of preparation and time to grow in our faith as we eagerly await the joyful miracle of Easter. I always enjoy our Palm Sunday service which leads us into Holy Week, then the miracle of Easter Sunday. Please do join us for our Easter services – a warm welcome awaits you. On behalf of St Mary’s PCC, do have a joyful, peaceful Easter and may your hopes for Spring shine through. Marion Marshall

TEMPLE GUITING CHURCH OF SCHOOL We have had a busy but very encouraging start to the New Year. We have recently had an OFSTED Inspection. The School has remained “GOOD” and we are very proud of this achievement. We feel this is a fair and accurate assessment of our school and we look forward to putting into effect the next steps provided by the Inspector to move our school even further forward. If you would like to read the report it is on our website under the Key Information button. Our older pupils have taken part in the “Young Engineers Challenge“ run by KNEX. Their task was to design and build a playground with moving parts. It was an intense afternoon but 2 of our pupils have been put forward to the next stage of the challenge and we wish them all the best for that.

Our youngest pupils have been on a trip to Birdland in Bourton on the Water. They are studying variation of species and parts of the body in Science so this was an ideal opportunity to study these areas with real, live subjects. The children had a fantastic time including holding an Owl, studying penguins and had a Keeper talk with the flamingos. They also had time on the Dinosaur Trail as Class 1’s topic is Dinosaurs this term. We have visited St Mary’s church for a Christingle Service. The children all made a Christingle with the very patient Revd Nick Scott one afternoon and then we all went to church with our Christingles for a service. This was a very special time of reflection and a lovely way to extend the Christmas season for just a little longer. Ann Barry, Headteacher
