These cy'les can $e readily seen in the regular, repeating patterns of nature, in the flo# of 'ause and effe't and in the longer*ter" patterns of our o#n lives. (he planets do not 'ause these 'y'les but are the"selves subje't to the". ,a'h planet (e.'ept the /oon) orbits the Sun, the sour'e of all life. ,a'h ti"e a planet 'o"pletes one revolution of this 'onstant point the principle represented by it is e.pressed in its entirety. (o read your natal 'hart $egin by fa"iliarising yourself #ith the 2lanets, 1igns and 3ouses. (hese #ill be 'overed in the 'o"ing pages of this eboo%. (hen loo% at your 'hart to see in #hi'h sign and house the planets fall. After the Sun, the strongest planet in the 'hart is the ruler of the sign on the As'endant, #hi'h is referred to as the 6ruling planet’. Its influence #ill be very strong and the 'hara'teristi's of the sign in #hi'h it is positioned #ill be e"phasi7ed. (he area of li!e ruled by the ruler&s house position will proba$ly be of i"portance to the native. 8e.t in signifi'ance 'o"es the /oon. Be'ause the /oon revolves around the ,arth rather than the Sun, it tends to la'% its o#n energy, usually ta%ing on the 'olour of the sign and house in #hi'h it is pla'ed. It is also easily influenced $y other planets in relationship to it. (hus the /oon rules e"otional response and rea'tion.     The Differences between Western & Vedic Astrology Dr Anil Kumar Porwal Zodiac The most foundational difference between Western and Vedic astrology is each system's choice of Zodiac. Western astrologers use the Tropical Zodiac, where the beginnings of the twelve signs are determined by the Sun's apparent orbit around the Earth, i.e. the onset of the four seasons, i.e. when the Sun crosses the Equator (going North at Spring which defines Aries and South in the Fall indicating the beginning of Libra) and its uppermost and lowest points (the Summer and Winter Solstices). Vedic astrologers, on the other hand, use the Sidereal Zodiac, which is based upon the physical positions of the constellations in the sky. They choose a starting point (most commonly the place in the sky opposite to Spica) for the beginning of Aries, and proceed in equal 30 degree segments for subsequent signs. While planets in signs are used extensively in Western astrology as the major definer of the expression of a planet, Vedic astrology uses signs differently, and reviewed in my article The Vedic Signs at: http://www.learnastrologyfree.com/vedicsigns.htm House System In addition, most modern Western astrologers use one of the many house systems that places the degree of the Ascendant as the beginning of the First House, with either unequally- or equally-sized houses. Vedic astrologers, by and large, use Whole Sign Houses, where the Ascendant can fall anywhere in the First House, and each house comprises all of one sign. Many also use Bhava/Shri Pati houses for a portion of their work.

    Essential Dignity Essential dignity is a way of evaluating the innate level of development or refinement of each planet in the chart. Planets that have a lot of essential dignity are generally stronger, show more positive effects, are better integrated into the personality, and function more freely in their domains. Some modern astrologers give little credence to the rulerships, just as they fail to regard any planet as innately malefic or benefic. In surveying the history of astrology, this is evidently a great error. The rulerships are a seminal principle in astrology, and one on which a large proportion of interpretive work was based for thousands of years before the common era. Sign Rulerships The first consideration in assessing the essential dignity of a planet is to observe whether it is in a sign that it rules. Each planet rules two signs, except the sun and moon, which rule only one each. When planets are in the signs they rule, the expression of their energy is easy and has relatively free reign. You should imagine that the planets are literal rulers of their respective signs, which constitute their kingdoms. Rulers within their own kingdoms have the benefit of their own resources to execute their desires, provide for their protection, and distribute to other regions. Rulers in foreign lands are necessarily more vulnerable and subject to interference. This will become an important operative principle when we discuss dispositorship below. Planetary rulership of the signs falls within a pattern that is often little appreciated by modern astrologers. For the astrological student, the discovery of the structure of dispositorship in the natal map allows him or her to perceive a true ordering of planetary powers. Mutual reception is a facet of dispositorship that intimately links planets and/or houses. Planets are said to be n mutual reception when they are placed in each other’s signs in the same horoscope. That which results from an aspect between two or more astrological factors or sensitive points, thereby producing the action that can materialize in an event. Adept. One who has attained to proficiency in any art or science. It may be said of a skilled astrologer who, through spiritual development, has attained to superior powers and transcendental knowledge concerning the origins and destiny of mankind. Formerly said of an alchemist who had attained the 'great secret' - presumably that concerning the 'transmutation of metals'. Its modern application is to the transmutation of unfavorable cosmic stimuli and the baser emotions into nobler impulses - thereby achieving the triumph of mind over matter, and of the spiritual over the carnal.
