There are endless stories that could be written about the interesting history of astrology in Europe, but this article will concentrate on highlighting some different methods used in karmic astrology today. For further reading on the history behind this, please check references below. The Nodes Chart One of the important sources was the late Bruno Huber (1930-1999), a Swiss astrol- oger and founder of the Huber School of astrology, which serves as an important Psychological branch of astrology in Europe. He developed a method where several charts were used as reflectors or mirrors of the actual birth chart, aiming to get a deeper understanding of the personality. The Huber system aims to get to the root cause of a problem and the unconscious behaviours involved. Today there is still an active Huber School in Barcelona, and several of Huber´s books recently re-published. One of the charts especially refers to the karmic past. This is calculated based on the Moon’s Nodes, and is called the Nodal or the karmic chart. In this chart, a person´s behaviour that might stem from earlier incar- nations is present and compared with the birth chart. The Nodal chart shows ties in the area of the subconscious and gives informa- tion about the depths of the soul´s journey.     The Differences between Western & Vedic Astrology Dr Anil Kumar Porwal Zodiac The most foundational difference between Western and Vedic astrology is each system's choice of Zodiac. Western astrologers use the Tropical Zodiac, where the beginnings of the twelve signs are determined by the Sun's apparent orbit around the Earth, i.e. the onset of the four seasons, i.e. when the Sun crosses the Equator (going North at Spring which defines Aries and South in the Fall indicating the beginning of Libra) and its uppermost and lowest points (the Summer and Winter Solstices). Vedic astrologers, on the other hand, use the Sidereal Zodiac, which is based upon the physical positions of the constellations in the sky. They choose a starting point (most commonly the place in the sky opposite to Spica) for the beginning of Aries, and proceed in equal 30 degree segments for subsequent signs. While planets in signs are used extensively in Western astrology as the major definer of the expression of a planet, Vedic astrology uses signs differently, and reviewed in my article The Vedic Signs at: http://www.learnastrologyfree.com/vedicsigns.htm House System In addition, most modern Western astrologers use one of the many house systems that places the degree of the Ascendant as the beginning of the First House, with either unequally- or equally-sized houses. Vedic astrologers, by and large, use Whole Sign Houses, where the Ascendant can fall anywhere in the First House, and each house comprises all of one sign. Many also use Bhava/Shri Pati houses for a portion of their work.

    Essential Dignity Essential dignity is a way of evaluating the innate level of development or refinement of each planet in the chart. Planets that have a lot of essential dignity are generally stronger, show more positive effects, are better integrated into the personality, and function more freely in their domains. Some modern astrologers give little credence to the rulerships, just as they fail to regard any planet as innately malefic or benefic. In surveying the history of astrology, this is evidently a great error. The rulerships are a seminal principle in astrology, and one on which a large proportion of interpretive work was based for thousands of years before the common era. Sign Rulerships The first consideration in assessing the essential dignity of a planet is to observe whether it is in a sign that it rules. Each planet rules two signs, except the sun and moon, which rule only one each. When planets are in the signs they rule, the expression of their energy is easy and has relatively free reign. You should imagine that the planets are literal rulers of their respective signs, which constitute their kingdoms. Rulers within their own kingdoms have the benefit of their own resources to execute their desires, provide for their protection, and distribute to other regions. Rulers in foreign lands are necessarily more vulnerable and subject to interference. This will become an important operative principle when we discuss dispositorship below. Planetary rulership of the signs falls within a pattern that is often little appreciated by modern astrologers. It also reveals what blocks or what stands within us to either aid or inhibit the expression of such talents and abilities. As the Path of unfolding presence of the Soul reveals itself, we gradually obtain the potential to co- create our own destiny. One of the most important factors in astrological delineation is a feature called “dispositorship.” The word itself comes from the Latin verb disponere, meaning, “to put in different places.” A planetary dispositor in astrology has come to mean a planet that has the ability to move the energy of another planet (or house) to a different location in the chart. For the astrological student, the discovery of the structure of dispositorship in the natal map allows him or her to perceive a true ordering of planetary powers. Mutual reception is a facet of dispositorship that intimately links planets and/or houses. Planets are said to be n mutual reception when they are placed in each other’s signs in the same horoscope. Mars in Aquarius and Uranus in Scorpio, Jupiter in Leo and the Sun in Sagittarius, the Moon in Virgo and Mercury in Cancer, are all examples of this kind of mutual dispositorship.
