Page 4 Notley High School and Braintree Sixth Form Newsletter – Issue 316 - 20 October 2011 “Working together, achieving together” Jack Petchey Achievement Award Winner – September 2011 Our first winner for this year is Riley Baker of 9L, who was nominated for his excellence and achievement in football. Riley started playing football at the age of 5 years, when he was encouraged by his family to become a member of Gt Bradfords FC, where he stayed until the age of 9, developing his skills within those 4 years. His next move was to Chelmsford City FC where he played until, at the age of 11 years, whilst playing in a tournament, he was spotted by a Chelsea FC scout. However, at the time it was felt the travelling distance was too far and his manager at Chelmsford City, who had links with Tottenham Hotspur FC (Spurs), arranged for a trial there for Riley. Coaches at Spurs were impressed with Riley’s ability and he joined their satellite scheme, still at the age of 11, where he has played for the past two years. After another six week trial, Riley has now joined as a member of the Spurs Academy and at the age of 16, he hopes that he will be signed up for the first team! Although his current position is centre back, he has been a midfielder and also a striker. He will be at Spurs on Thursdays this year on day release. Last year, whilst in Year 8, Riley had two fantastic experiences when he had two 1-week tours playing other junior squads in Portugal and Qatar. His Spurs squad played the Qatari team twice – winning both games. In Year 9, there will be lots of travel at weekends, when Riley will be playing other teams’ Academy squads around the country. Riley is giving the PE Department his £200 award funding in order that they can purchase new, named tracksuit tops. Riley’s commitment to his sport, dedication to training and competitive spirit have enabled him to reach an incredible standard of performance at such a young age. He must be congratulated on this success and level of achievement, as well as his passion for football, which will take his career further. Mrs Jacqui Smith Sennior Teacher

The Award is highly respected by colleges, universities and employers and demonstrates a young person’s commitment, determination, compassion and team-working skills. It is open to all young people between the ages of 14 and 24, regardless of ability or background. As part of the Award the students will be completing activities under the sections of volunteering, physical and skill. They will be doing this individually with the support of Learning how to put up the tents other DofE students, their family and specially trained staff within school. This weekend the students took part in a training day which helped them prepare for the camping expedition that will take place next year. The students learnt about nutrition, clothing, first aid, navigation, cooking, setting up tents and how to work as part of a team. During the morning the students worked their way around a series of activities and in the afternoon, the students used their newly found navigation skills to navigate around Braintree. Some groups were more successful than others! Notley High School and Braintree Sixth Form Newsletter – Issue 316 - 20 October 2011 Page 7 “Working together, achieving together” Design Museum Trip On Tuesday 20 September our Product Design group went to the Design Museum in London to help us with our current project, Design Ventura. Design Ventura is a competition for schools nationwide to make a product to sell in the Design Museum Shop for £10. The design has to be playful and for a wide audience. The winning product will go on display in the Design Museum. We went to see three exhibits: ‘Kenneth Grange Making Britain Modern’, ‘This is Design’ and ‘Designers in Residence’. The Kenneth Grange Exhibition showcases some of his designs, from razors to letter boxes. He has designed many everyday objects like pens. I never knew how much this man had designed! The ‘This is Design’ exhibit showed objects designed by people, like traffic lights across the nation which were redesigned by David Mellor in 1966. What I found most interesting in this exhibit was the different chairs on display, some you would not expect to find in the Design Museum. The third exhibition, ‘Design in Residence’, is about how the designer creates their product and shows examples of how they have experimented with techniques, like dying a material a certain colour. We have seen professional designers’ plans for products that they have actually Some well-known, and not so well put into production and some of their prototypes. known, chairs on exhibition in the The trip has really inspired all of us in working towards our final product for Design Museum Design Ventura.

Trips at Notley High School and Braintree Sixth Form As well as providing high quality teaching and learning experiences at Notley High School and Braintree Sixth Form, we aim to ensure that the classroom activities are extended and enriched by offering a range of trips and visits. Detailed on page 9 is an outline of typical annual trips that take place, with approximate costs. We have produced this as a guide, in order to allow parents/carers to make any necessary financial plans. Opportunities arise throughout each year for all kinds of trips. Details of these will be provided to you with as much notice as possible. The viability of any trip is dependent on sufficient interest from students. It will be assumed that students will catch up promptly with any work missed from lessons whilst participating in trips. We will always endeavour to keep the cost of trips to a minimum.

Year 7 students have begun their lessons being taught how to stay safe online, which is essential in today’s digital world. All KS3 lessons follow an online courseware program called ICT4life, which is an interactive suite of software. This poster is a Year 7 student’s homework on advising young children how to stay safe using the Internet.

In Year 9, classes are undertaking an enterprise activity where they are researching, analysing, marketing, designing, producing and selling a range of greetings cards to raise money for a children’s charity. These will be sold to students and staff in school in December. Currently, students are at the stage where

they have researched and analysed the market for cards – a questionnaire produced in Word and analysis created in Excel are displayed here. As you can see, the most popular type of card which would sell the most at the end of the term is, (unsurprisingly!), Christmas cards. This is closely followed by birthday cards, which sell all year. These activities are exactly the type of things which a real business would undertake, in order to make sure there was a market for its products. Students will be writing reports on their findings and then sketching designs and gaining feedback from each other. Improvements to the designs will be made and, using desktop publishing and graphics software, students will create their cards with the tools in each program and also with the use of graphics tablets. Prototyping and testing will then follow and finally colour printing

work as well as developing their ICT skills. This September saw the start of a brand new course – GCSE ICT. This is a write up by a Year 10 student with her experience so far:

ICT helps me as a student in a variety of ways; now and in the future. In the GCSE course for ICT in Year 10, the first unit is all about ‘Living in a digital world.’ We learn about the awareness and risks by using ICT and also about being safe and responsible on the Internet. We do a written exam on this unit which is worth 40% of your ICT final mark.

Unit 2 is in Year 11, which is a controlled assessment, having 40 hours to complete in lessons. It is about ‘Using digital tools’ and it is a practical unit and worth 60% of my final mark. I chose ICT as one of my options because when you look for jobs, all of them involve ICT skills in some way or another. It also looks brilliant on your CV. In ICT the lessons are very well organised by the teachers; a way in which we can be independent with our work but at the same time, the teacher helps us when we need it. This is a great strategy to use as it helps me as a student learn more, and helps us learn quicker. The teachers make the lessons active and enjoyable for us so it’s not so boring. Mr Ferguson is my current teacher for this course and he has been absolutely brilliant in teaching me and helping me learn. I’ve learnt so many useful skills already having him as my teacher which is great! I would definitely recommend taking ICT as an option for everybody because anybody can do it and it’s a useful, fantastic course which will benefit you in life and you learn an exceptional amount of information and techniques. L.I.B Spy Day Warning: Top Secret On 11 and 12 October the Notley High School library held a themed day, “Spy Day”. Ten eager teams signed up to take part in six fun packed challenges during break and lunch. The teams worked their socks off to complete these missions. The teams consisted of four agents. They had to fill in a sheet with their team names and agent names. These names were chosen by the team members. In the break period they made their identity cards and got their first mission. They then carried on with the activities through lunch and worked through each mission. Each team was eager to get going and start the missions and get the code to open their allocated book. We asked the students what they thought of the spy day and here is what they thought: St. Trillians – “The spy day was really fun and challenging for us. We would love to do it again.” S.S.S.S. – “The spy day was really cool we really enjoyed it.” Breakers- “The spy day was amazing and cool.” Smarties- “We think it was very fun and we would love to do it again” Buff Kids – “Really good and impressive” Double 14- “quite good” Crcj – “Yesterday was cool” Boom Chicca Boom- “It was fun, alright and cool.” Well done to all the teams that participated. Congratulations go to the joint winners Team St Trillians - Rachel Funesilver, Kayli Haydon, Kayleigh Moulds and Fatima Siddiqui from 7Y and Team S.S.S.S. - Matthew Duncan 7L, Harrison Hunt 7L, Morgan Hunt 7B and Jordan Rush 7T. Well done to Mrs Simkins and Mrs Osborn for organizing a superb day and a big thanks to the student Librarians for their hard work over the 2 days. We hope the teams enjoyed their sweet prizes! Warning: shh this is secret. We got an interview from both teams on how they felt the day went; here are their answers: St Trilians – “The day was really fun and challenging because we thought we were winning. We enjoyed opening the lock on our book and running backwards and forward to get the next mission. It would have been even more fun if the challenges were a little bit more challenging.” S.S.S.S- “It was a really fun, exciting day with lots of tension. We enjoyed the tension at the end because we were neck and neck with St Trilians . We felt our whole team did a super job.” Bethany Dennison 9Y and Rachel Harvey 9N

The real meanings of the words used is much clearer when seen in action and represented by the actors. For example, the visualisation of astronomy, though complex in words, was simplistic when explained by actors and planets.
