School Description and Mission Statement (School Year 2010-11) This section provides information about the school, its programs and its goals.

Ceres High School is a comprehensive high school located in the city of Ceres and the county of Stanislaus, in the central . It is approximately 80 miles south of Sacramento and 95 miles east of . Once an agriculturally based community with food processing and related businesses playing key roles, most jobs are now in manufacturing, retail trade and social services. The Ceres industrial area consists of 165 industrially zoned areas. For the past several years, there has been a trend toward Ceres becoming a “bedroom community” of commuters continues; however growth has slowed with the current economy. Built in 1908, Ceres High School is one of two comprehensive high schools in the Ceres Unified School District. The district is also home to 11 elementary schools, two junior high schools, an alternative high school, a charter school and an adult education center. Housed on 47 acres, the campus and surrounding areas continue to undergo renovation.

Enrollment since 2007 and the opening of the second comprehensive high school, has remained steady at approximately 1400 students. The ethnic makeup of our student population is 58% , 28% White, 8% Asian and 6% Other. The number of students considered socioeconomically disadvantaged has steadily increased over teh past five years to71% Approximately 18.5% of the student population are English Learners and 10% are students with disablities.

Staff at Ceres High School include 1 principal, 1 associate principal, 3 learning directors, 1 counselor, 1 administrative assistant, 1 activities director, 1 athletic director, 1 school psychologist, 1 school nurse, and 1 resource officer. There are currently 59 certificated teachers and 47 classified employees, which include food servers, campus supervisors, custodians, maintenance, groundskeeper, instructional paraprofessionals, and clerical staff.

We are dedicated to give our students the ultimate educational experience. We offer rigorous courses that prepare our students for college, as well as a multitude of co- and extra-curricular opportunities that wil help our students reach academic excellence and become responsible citizens of our community. Support is offered to all students through a variety of services: academic tutoring ; counseling provided through school personnel and the Center of Human Services; mentoring provided through the Manufacturing Academy Business Partners, school personnel, and Youth for Christ volunteers; and CAHSEE remediation provided through highly qualified school personnel.

To help CHS reach our goals of academic success for all students, there are a variety of supplemental funding sources from which we draw: Title I, Carl Perkins Vocational and Applied Technology, EIA for English Lanugage Learners, California Partner Academy Grant, and many parent groups including Athletic Boosters. In addition, CHS has several committees in which parents and community members are vital participants: School Site Council, English Learner Advisory Committee, Advisory Committees for Career Technical Education and Agriculture, and Manufacturing Technology Advisory Committee.

Ceres High School is currently preparing for a WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) Accreditation Visit in March of 2012. Part of this process includes developing committees that include teachers, classified staff, administrators, parents and students. The committees gather evidence, analyze data, and make recommendations that will be included in a schoolwide action plan.

Opportunities for Parental Involvement (School Year 2010-11) This section provides information on how parents can become involved in school activities, including contact information pertaining to organized opportunities for parent involvement.

There are several ways in which Ceres High School encourages parental involvement. Site activities include performances in theater, dance and music; athletic contests; club activities; parent-teacher conferences; back-to-school night; open house; registration; college and financial aide nights; Young Author's Fair; math and science bowls; Academic Decathlon competition. There are also many committees and organizations in which parental involvement is encouraged: School Site Council, advisory committees, ELAC (English Learner Advisory Committee), WASC focus groups, club advisors, and Booster organizations. All of these committees and organziations meet on a regular basis and provide input to school administration. In addition, Ceres High School uses direct dialer messages and newsletters to keep parents apprised. All correspondence is completed in both English and Spanish, and some is translated into Arabic.

Communication is a vital aspect of parent involvement. To help keep parents apprised of their students' academic progress, Ceres High School provides written report cards and progress reports 8 times per year, in addition to phone calls from teachers, counselors and learning directors. All freshmen complete a four year plan, detailing their academic pathway. Parents are invited to participate in these meetings. The four year plan is revisited every year, but parents are again invited to meet with counselors and learning directors during their students' sophomore year in order to make adjustments. Informational fliers and automatic dialer messages are frequently sent home to advise parents of academic programs or important events. Additionally, parents have access to student discipline, grades, and attendance through Infinitie Campus, Ceres Unified's student information system. Infinite Campus is a web based program that also provides a means of communication between parents and teachers. Ceres High School has computers on campus that parents can use to access Infinite Campus and their students' information.

Ceres High School sponsors the Parent Institute for Quality Education every other year. The Parent Institute is a nine week course designed to teach parents how to become a more informed partner in the educational process. While the Institute is offered to all parents, its emphasis is involving parents of Hispanic origin. Students of parents who graduate from the Institute are eligible for college scholarships. Finally, Ceres High School encourages parents to contact the administration, counselors, or teachers on a regular basis. The Safe School Plan is reviewed and modified each year as needed. The Safe School Committee, a sub committee of the School Site Council, recommends changes to the Safe School Plan based on review of information. All changes are submitted to the School Board for approval on an annual basis.

The district administration and members of the Board of Trustees conduct annual inspections of the site to identify areas of repair/replacement. In the most recent inspection, CHS scored a 9 out of a possible 10. The head custodian and Assistant Principal in charge of facilities conduct monthly inspections and discuss their findings with the custodial staff in order to maintain the cleanliness and upkeep of the facilities. Ceres Unified School District has implemented a district-wide energy conservation plan. Ceres High School has achieved a 37% savings of energy over last year.

Ceres High School has recently renovated our shop areas creating a state of the art Manufacturing Technology Shop and Welding Shop. In addition, a third shop will see renovations within the next five years. CHS is scheduled to begin construction on a new classroom wing in the spring of 2011 that will house three new computer labs and four regular classrooms. All of these projects are partly funded through Measure U.

Each year the Ceres Unified School District Board of Trustees holds a public hearing to comply with the requirements of Education Code 60119, which ensures the sufficiency of instructional materials in the school district. In addition, within 8 weeks of the start of school the Board of Trustees holds a public hearing to make a determination through a resolution that every student has sufficient textbooks or instructional materials in the four core subjects of reading/language arts, mathematics, science, and history-social science. This public hearing is held to satisfy the requirements under the Williams Act. No school was found to be insuffcient of textbooks and instructional materials in the 2009-10 school year.

IX. Student Performance

The Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program consists of several key components, including:

• California Standards Tests (CSTs), which include English-language arts (ELA) and mathematics in grades two through eleven; science in grades five, eight, and nine through eleven; and history-social science in grades eight, and nine through eleven.

• California Modified Assessment (CMA), an alternate assessment that is based on modified achievement standards in ELA for grades three through eleven; mathematics for grades three through seven, Algebra I, and Geometry; and science in grades five and eight, and Life Science in grade ten. The CMA is designed to assess those students whose disabilities preclude them from achieving grade-level proficiency on an assessment of the California content standards with or without accommodations.

• California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA), includes ELA and mathematics in grades two through eleven, and science for grades five, eight, and ten. The CAPA is given to those students with significant cognitive disabilities whose disabilities prevent them from taking either the CSTs with accommodations or modifications or the CMA with accommodations.

California High School Exit Examination

The California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) is primarily used as a graduation requirement. Academic Performance Index The Academic Performance Index (API) is an annual measure of state academic performance and progress of schools in California. Admission Requirements for California’s Public Universities

University of California Admission requirements for the University of California (UC) follow guidelines set forth in the Master Plan, which requires that the top one-eighth of the state’s high school graduates, as well as those transfer students who have successfully completed specified college course work, be eligible for admission to the UC. These requirements are designed to ensure that all eligible students are adequately prepared for University-level work.

California State University Eligibility for admission to the California State University (CSU) is determined by three factors:

• Specific high school courses • Grades in specified courses and test scores • Graduation from high school

Some campuses have higher standards for particular majors or students who live outside the local campus area. Because of the number of students who apply, a few campuses have higher standards (supplementary admission criteria) for all applicants. Most CSU campuses have local admission guarantee policies for students who graduate or transfer from high schools and colleges that are historically served by a CSU campus in that region. Career Technical Education Programs (School Year 2010-11) This section provides information about Career Technical Education (CTE) programs including:

• Programs and classes offered that are specifically focused on career preparation and or preparation for work • How these programs and classes are integrated with academic courses and how they support academic achievement • How the school addresses the needs of all students in career preparation and/or preparation for work, including needs unique to defined special populations of students • The measurable outcomes of these programs and classes, and how they are evaluated • State the primary representative of the district’s CTE advisory committee and the industries represented on the committee

Ceres Unified School District (CUSD) currently offers ROP courses in twelve different areas that range from agriculture to technology, and manufacturing to criminal justice. Our program bridges the historical gap between education and industry by actively involving local employers such as Gallo Winery, Con-Agra Foods, JM Equipment, and other manufacturing industry employers.

When students express interest in a specific pathway, the counselor meets with the student and maps out the sequence of courses needed to complete the program of interest. This sequence includes not only the CTE courses but also courses to meet graduation requirements. This mapping process gives the student a plan to follow and an opportunity to look forward to a good paying job at the conclusion of the program. Students are encouraged to pursue CTE courses through a variety of recruitment activities that occur on and off site.

It is the policy of Ceres Unified that no student is excluded from participation in any course or program based on his/her identification as a member of a special population. All CTE courses are available for enrollment by male and female students, by academically challenged students, by pregnant teens, and others. The school site counselors provide information to all students interested in the CTE pathway courses and programs. Each student in the ninth grade completes a four year plan with his/her counselor that maps the courses required each year in order to graduate. Elective periods are those in which the student may have flexibility to choose a CTE course or pathway to complete. Students may also self-select the CTE course of their choice as their elective period(s). Due to the nature of the CTE courses offered and the fact that Ceres Unified serves over 35% of students identified as English Language Learners, our programs are an ideal opportunity for these students. Students that require an Individual Education Plan, due to a special education identified need, are also eligible to participate in CTE courses given that they meet the same prerequisite requirements as all other students.

The District’s CTE Master Plan, mandates that we will increase the number of and ensure special population students access to CTE programs including: a) Transportation access will be considered for all students to attend any Career Technical Education courses; b) Staff, students and parents will be made aware of CTE courses and accommodations that will be made for students in unique populations; c) Review of prerequisites for courses with individual students during four year planning phase; and d) All students, including special needs students, disadvantaged youth, English Learners, and students attending the District’s continuation and independent study high schools will be informed of the opportunities in Career Technical Education courses at the same time preparing them for college entrance. Ceres Unified provides students with identified special needs, opportunities for adjusted levels of performance through modifications and accommodations to their performance in the class and on course work.

If a special needs student requires accommodations that go beyond the extent allowed that prevent actual skill attainment, then the student’s IEP plan will be reassessed for appropriateness and/or the student’s counselor will recommend a modification of the four year plan in order to best meet the needs of the student. As part of the IEP process, a Transition Plan must be created for all students prior to turning 16 years old that documents how the district will assist the student in preparing for life after high school in a job or for further education.

Ceres Unified has created the first “Fast Track” CTE program model in Stanislaus County that is comprehensive from instruction to training to employment. In coordination with the Central Valley Manufacturers Council and Modesto Junior College, Ceres Unified is seeking to actively respond to a need that exists in this region for qualified workers in the manufacturing industry.

XII. Instructional Planning and Scheduling

Professional Development This section provides information on the number of days provided for professional development and continuous professional growth in the most recent three year period. Questions that may be answered include: • What are the primary/major areas of focus for staff development and specifically how were they selected? For example, were student achievement data used to determined the need for professional development in reading instruction? • What are the methods by which professional development is delivered (e.g., after school workshops, conference attendance, individual mentoring, etc.)? • How are teachers supported during implementation (e.g., through in-class coaching, teacher-principal meetings, student performance data reporting, etc.)?

Staff development is a critical component to teacher and student success, and Ceres Unified School District is dedicated to a variety of professional development opportunities for staff. After school on Mondays is time dedicated to department, staff and Instructional Leadership Team meetings. Teachers collaborate, learn strategies, and develop plans that help increase student learning. Ceres High School is focusing staff development on level one student engagement strategies, such as the use of whiteboards, random selection and think-pair-share activities. In addition, Ceres High School is developing quality questioning strategies that will increase student engagement and move students into higher thinking skills. For the 2010-11 school year, CHS is ensuring that objectives are posted, are measurable, and meaningful. Professional development has been offered in all of these areas.

CHS teachers who teach AP/Honors-levels classes receive regular AP training and the staff has attended specific workshops to learn new teaching strategies such as differentiated instruction. Teachers also attend conferences that are specific to their subject-area.

The district participates in BTSA, AB 466, and other county and state approved formal training programs dedicated to improving teacher quality. In addition, the district fully supports classroom teachers with a cadre of full time staff developer/coaches who can assist with the implementation of curriculum and strategies.

School sites must include a professional development plan and budget in their school site plan. Activities can include attendance at summer institutes, after school or Saturday workshops, teacher release days to attend conferences, and grade level or department release days for in depth professional development. All professional development is aligned to the district strategic plan. The goal of all professional development is to increase student achievement.
