The focal species of this study, Cardamine barbaraeoides, is a narrow Greek endemic that has been confused taxonomically since its original description. Based on a detailed multivariate morphometric study, we provide here a set of morphological characters that enables the reliable identification of this species. In addition, we present an identification key to C. barbaraeoides and related taxa. We have revised herbarium specimens and literature data on the occurrence of this species in Greece and ascertained that it occurs only in the Pindos mountains (the Southern Pindos and partly the Northern Pindos floristic regions). -

Crowdsourcing Lost Cultural Heritage

ABSTRACT: Cultural Heritage all over the world is at high risk. Natural and human activities endanger the current state of monuments and sites, whereas many of them have already been destroyed especially during the last years. Preventive actions are of utmost importance for the protection of human memory and the prevention of irreplaceable. These actions may be carried out either in situ or virtually. Very often in situ preventive, or protective or restoration actions are difficult or even impossible, as e.g. in cases of earthquakes, fires or war activity. Digital preservation of cultural heritage is a challenging task within photogrammetry and computer vision communities, as efforts are taken to collect digital data, especially of the monuments that are at high risk. Visit to the field and data acquisition is not always feasible. To overcome the missing data problem, crowdsourced imagery is used to create a visual representation of lost cultural heritage objects. Such digital representations may be 2D or 3D and definitely help preserve the memory and history of the lost heritage. -
Artifacts of the Past As Traces of Memory. the Aromanian Cultural Heritage in the Balkans Artefakty Przeszłości Jako Ślady Pamięci
RES HISTORICA 41, 2016 DOI: 10.17951/rh.2016.41.1.159 Ewa Kocój (Jagiellonian University in Kraków) Artifacts of the Past as Traces of Memory. The Aromanian Cultural Heritage in the Balkans Artefakty przeszłości jako ślady pamięci. Dziedzictwo kulturowe Aromanów na Bałkanach I wish I could become a chronicler of places which never existed on the map, and events of which history never took any notice1.

Ioannis Kolettis. the Vlach from the Ruling ELITE of Greece
BALCANICA POSNANIENSIA xxIV Poznań 2017 IOANNIS KOLETTIS. THE VLACH FROM THE RULING ELITE OF GREECE DALIBOR JOVANOVSKI , NIKOLA MINOV ABSTRACT. Ioannis Kolettis. The Vlach from the ruling elite of Greece. The article is aimed to show how Ioannis Kolettis, the first Vlach to become Prime Minister of the Greek king- dom. The Vlach people, despite being a stateless ethnic minority in southeastern Europe, have traditionally been deeply involved in every part of the social life in the countries they inhabited. In Greece, more than in any other country, the influence of certain prominent Vlachs has been felt since the foundation of the modern Greek state. Ioannis Kolettis, who served as Prime Minister of Greece from 1844 to 1847, is a striking example of the above thesis. I. Kolettis left a lasting impression on Greek internal and foreign affairs. Despite his non-Greek but Vlach origins, I. Kolettis is credited for conceiving the Great Idea, which became the core of Greek foreign policy and dominated Greek domestic politics for over half a century. English text with the summary in English. doi.org/10.14746/bp.2017.24.13 More than a century has passed since the British diplomat Sir Charles Eliot wrote one of the most creative and certainly one of the most accurate descriptions of the Vlach people: They remind one of those ingenious pictures in which an animal or a human face is concealed so as not to be obvious on first inspection, though when once seen it appears to be the principal feature of the drawing. -

THE ROLE OF BRITAIN IN GREEK POLITICS AND MILITARY OPERATIONS: 1947-1952 ELEFTHERIA DELAPORTA PhD THESIS SUBMISSION DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY FACULTY OF ARTS UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW FEBRUARY 2003 i Abstract This thesis examines Anglo-Greek relations during 1947-1952; the era of the Greek civil war from the British announcementto withdraw aid from Greeceuntil the end of the civil war and Greece'sentry into NATO. A comprehensivetreatment of the crisis of the civil war focuseson British imperial defence, the politics and society of Greeceand bilateral relations as formulatedby Cold War needs.During the rift between the Rigbt and the Left in Greece, the main issue addressedby this work is the continuation of British influence in Greek affairs and the extensionof British interestin bolstering the a nti-Communist fight of the Greek government. In 1947 Britain, being itself on the verge of economic collapse, opted to discontinue financial support to the Greekright-wing government, which boostedthe enunciationof the Truman Doctrine in March 1947. In t he w ake ofA merican i nterferenceinG reece,A nglo-Greekr elations remainedclose and intense,as the Greek governmentsmaintained their trust in the British. For the British, Greeceremained a destitute country, in need of assistanceto defeatthe communists. This study emphasisesthe diplomatic and military co-operation between the British, the Americanand the Greekgovernments in trying to defeatthe communist forces, while attention is given to the policy and aims of the Greek Communist Party. The communistattempts to take over power along with the policies of the Greek governmentsand their allies are examined, with particular emphasis on the counterinsurgencyoperations of the Greek government developed from 1947 until the final defeat of the communist forces in 1949.
