Als u Marum binnenkomt van de kant van de A7 vindt u bij de rotonde in het dorp bij hotel restaurant "Kruisweg" en restaurant "Heerlijkheid" uitgebreide parkeergelegenheid. U neemt de Wendtsteinweg naar het centrum en passeert knooppunt 85. 85-20 0,7 km Marum (Mar-um = plaats aan het water) is het oudste dorp op de zandrug van het Vredewold. 20-84 0,9 km 84-80 2.9 km. De romaanse kerk van Marum is één van de oudste bakstenen gebouwen in de provincie Groningen; het koor is gebouwd omstreeks 1175. Naast de kerk ligt een heuvel. Die bedekt de overblijfselen van een steenhuis of stins: een versterkte stenen toren in de middeleeuwen bedoeld als toevluchtsplek bij een gewapend conflict. Rechts van de kerk staat een zuivelfabriek die in 1916 door een coöperatie van 100 boeren werd gesticht. Na de kerk kruist de route de Verlengde Wilpster weg. Als u rechtsaf gaat en de weg (na het viaduct heet die Parallelweg) vervolgt, komt u bij de Marumerlage: de bovenloop van het Oude Diep is in 2015 heringericht en er is een plas dras gebied aangelegd. Ganzen en eenden komen er in de winter in grote aantallen voor en het gebied wordt ook ontdekt door allerlei steltlopers. Er is een wandeling van ca 5 km. om het terrein heen. Het begin is bij een kleine parkeerplaats aan de Parallelweg.
