Gethsemane Roses 2021 Antique Roses, Old Garden Roses, Older Classifications, and Species Roses Antique Roses include those classifications in existence prior to the first Hybrid Tea in 1867. They are known for their history, old-fashioned charm, fragrance, hardiness and vigor. Some are rebloomers, but many have a very long single bloom period in early summer. These should be pruned after blooming, not before. Hybrid Musk roses are informally included here among the Antiques, even thought they did not arrive until 1897. Name of Rose Height Color Description Zone Alba, 1629, United Kingdom. Pure white petals, with an open yellow eye. Provenance may be even older, as some identify this as the ALBA SEMI-PLENA 6-9' WHITE White Rose of York, used on heraldic badges during the War of the 3b Roses, 1455-1487. Powerfully fragrant. Blooms once a season, for several weeks in June. ARS rating 8.9. R. foetida bicolor, 'Turkish Rose'. Species; before 1590. Single blooms of brightest orange-red, yellow reverse. A graceful, arching AUSTRIAN COPPER 4-6' RED- ORANGE 3 plant, quite prickly, with a spectacular show of blooms once in early summer. Attracts hummingbirds. Peppermint Rose'. Hybrid Musk; Bentall, UK,1937. Sprays of small pink and white blooms cover this airy shrub, which can be BALLERINA 3.5' PALE PINK 5 encouraged to tumble up and over a fence. Repeats. Compliments dark purple Clematis 'jackmanii'. ARS rating 8.5. Charming! Bizard Triomphant', Gallica. Netherlands, before 1786. Big show of deepest pink, very double blooms for several weeks in early CHARLES DE MILLS 3' MAUVE 4b summer. Petals darken and intensify with age. Named for an early director of the East India Company. ARS rating 8.3. Colvill, United Kingdom, before 1825. Domesticated from a species rose collected in China, this rose was sold in a nursery that was CHESTNUT ROSE 6' PINK established in 1783 and introduced generations of Londoners to 6a exotic plants. Blowsy double blooms, lovely hips reminscent of chestnut burrs. Light yet delectable fragrance. Hybrid spinosissima; the Netherlands, before 1820. Deep magenta- red, single blooms in clusters with fluffy yellow stamens surrounding a yellow-green eye. Blooms heavily for several weeks in early DOORENBOS SELECTION 2-3' RED 4 summer. Prickly canes; airy, fern-like foliage. Victoria grows it in her yard. An unusual and dramatic addition to the garden! Own root. Very limited quantity. Schmitz, Canada, 2005. A hyrbridized Moss rose, with romantic, full PALATINA MUSCOSA 3-5' DEEP PINK blooms. Luscious scent of old rose with citrus tones. Blooms once a 5b season. Very limited quantity. Species, unknown. An unusual, wild hippie, comfortable in damp REPEATING SWAMP ROSE 4-5' PINK soil and part sun. Few thorns, attractive airy shrub. Recurrent 5 blooms. Redleaf Rose.' Species, Central Europe. The highlight of this stunning rose is its deep purple, glaucous foliage with a bluish tinge. Sets clusters of urn-shaped hips that turn orange in the fall. ROSA GLAUCA 5' PALE PINK 2b Graceful vase shaped plant, lovely with deep purple salvias. One of Victoria's favorites in her garden, stunning outside the Garfield Park Conservatory. ARS 8.9. Swamp Rose.' Species. Petite, single petal beauty! ARS rating 8.1. ROSA PALUSTRIS 3-8' PINK 4 Very limited quantity. Portland; Lindsay, Iran, 1930. Perfectly formed cushiony blooms of deep magenta, cloaked in bright green foliage. Strong, damask fragrance, tolerates some shade, and reblooms. Great source of ROSE DE RESCHT 3-4' FUCHSIA 4b essential rose oil used in perfume. Thought originally from the Persian (Iran) city of Rescht and brought to Europe in 1949. ARS rating 8.7. A favorite of ours for many years. Hybrid Perpetual; Levet, France, 1881. Cerise blossoms fade quickly to rose and pink, releasing a good measure of fragrance. Canes can ULRICH BRUNNER FILS 5-8' DEEP PINK 6b be quite long and vertical, so this is a good candidate for training along a fence. It's silky and delicious! ARS rating 8.1 English Roses This unofficial classification within the Shrub Roses includes those roses hybridized by David Austin of Shropshire, England, one of the world's best-known and best-loved breeders. Beginning in the 1960's, Mr. Austin set out to cross antique roses with modern Floribundas and Hybrid Teas, combining modern color and vigor with old-fashioned faces and fragrance. Perfectly formed, rich salmon rosettes that begin as red buds and eventually age to a rich, deep pink. A beautifully complex myrrh BOSCOBEL 2-3' PINK fragrance with hints of elderflower, pear and almond. Very healthy, 5 with vigorous, upright, bushy growth. Compact size ideal for city gardens. Available own root. 1991. A customer favorite! Warm apricot-yellow blooms, each APRICOT packed with up to 120 petals! Tall and vigorous, may be grown as a CROWN PRINCESS MARGARETA 5' 5a ORANGE climber. Stunning with deep purple salvia. Named for a granddaughter of Queen Victoria who loved to garden. 'Monferrato.' 2005. Clusters of very full, magenta-red blooms that age gracefully to dusky plum. Pleasing, fruity fragrance with hints of DARCEY BUSSELL 3-5' RED PINK 5 green. Named after the highly acclaimed principal ballerina of the Royal Ballet. Own root. 1992. We are helpless before this fabulous rose. Exquisite EVELYN 3-4' APRICOT fragrance; large, long-lasting, fully double quartered blooms. 5 Enchanting. ARS rating 8.1 1999. Deepest crimson-purple blooms add drama to the garden. CRIMSON Powerfully perfumed with an Old Rose scent. Upright, bushy habit. FALSTAFF 3-4' 5 PURPLE Named for the robust and bawdy fictitious character featured in several Shakespearean plays. 2005. Beautiful, warm buff pink blooms, particularly resistant to GENTLE HERMIONE 4' APRICOT PINK rain. Strong Old Rose scent. Healthy growth, disease resistant. 4 Named for a character in Shakespeare's "A Winter's Tale". Own root. 1992. One of our favorites! Abundant golden apricot blooms atop bright light green foliage. Delicious tea scent with hints of GOLDEN CELEBRATION 4-5' YELLOW 5 strawberry. Nathan grows it as a glorious climber! ARS 8.1. Own root. 1984. Huge, blousy blooms glow pale pink on an upright shrub with relatively few thorns. Beautiful fragrance with overtones of fruit, HERITAGE 4-5' PALE PINK 5 honey and carnation on a myrrh background. Cool and refreshing. One of our very favorite Austins! ARS rating 8.5. 2006. A prolific bloomer, and notably healthy! Deeply cupped, pale apricot buds open fully to creamy dome-shaped blooms. Sweet spicy LICHFIELD ANGEL (OR) 3-4' CREAM 6 scent. Named for an 8th century sculpted panel recently discovered in a cathedral near David Austin's UK nursery. Own root. 1983. A fantastic plant in every way! A vigorous bloomer, it covers itself in blousy, fragrant flowers of pure pink, repeating early and MARY ROSE 3-4' PINK 4 often. Rich old rose fragrance with hints of honey. Healthy and cold- hardy too! ARS rating 8.3. Own root. Very limited quantity. 2007. Light crimson buds open to a dramatic velvety deep crimson CRIMSON purple. New foliage reddish bronze, changing to mid green. Growth MUNSTEAD WOOD 2-3' 5 PURPLE is bushy. Small stature works well for city gardens and containers. Very fragrant! ARS 8.0. Own root. 2007. A few rows of soft pink outer petals encase deeply cupped, rich pink center of each bloom for a lovely color play. Up to 130 PRINCESS ALEXANDRA OF KENT 3' PINK petals per bloom! This rose won the fragrance award at the 2009 5 Glasgow, Scotland rose trials. A customer favorite every year. Own root. ARS rating 8.0. SOLD OUT White Heritage.’ 2003. This is the nearly white sport of one of our very favorite roses, 'Heritage.' She shares all of Heritage's good ROSE-MARIE 3-4' WHITE qualities, including nearly thornless canes. Pretty blooms with the 5 sweet fragrance of honey and almonds appear in flushes all summer long. Very lovely! ARS rating 8.1 1987. Perfectly formed rosettes of rich deep yellow, fading to creamy yellow toward the outer petals as the blooms age. Graceful TEASING GEORGIA 4-6' YELLOW arching growth, can be trained as a short climber. Try it paired with 5 a deep purple clematis or perennials with bronzey foliage for a dramatic color play. Climbing Roses Climbing roses have long canes that are flexible when new, allowing them to be trained on a wall, fence, arbor, or other garden feature. Climbers bloom their best when trained out and up. They need not be heavily pruned; remove deadwood, trim back longest canes by 12" or so, and cut back lateral side shoots to 6-8".
