CHAPTER THREE THE RISE OF MRAUK U INFLUENCE (1593-1612) The start of Arakanese rule in Chittagong around 1590 was as we saw closely connected with the development of an Arakanese-Portuguese partnership. The account of Fernberger and the earlier involvement of the Portuguese mercenaries in the army of the Bengal sultans are testimony to the important role of these Portuguese communities in the Arakan-Bengal continuum. When Man Phalaung died in 1593 he was succeeded by his son king Man Raja- kri (1593-1612).1 Man Raja-kri would continue the expansion of Arakanese rule along the shores of the Bay of Bengal. In 1598 he would take part in the siege of Pegu that would lead to the end of the first Toungoo dynasty in Burma in 1599. The early years of the seventeenth century would also witness the first armed confrontations between the Arakanese and the Mughals in south-eastern Bengal.

  • Bayazid Ansari and Roushaniya Movement: a Conservative Cult Or a Nationalist Endeavor?
Himayatullah Yaqubi BAYAZID ANSARI AND ROUSHANIYA MOVEMENT: A CONSERVATIVE CULT OR A NATIONALIST ENDEAVOR? This paper deals with the emergence of Bayazid Ansari and his Roushaniya Movement in the middle of the 16th century in the north-western Pakhtun borderland. The purpose of the paper is to make comprehensive analyses of whether the movement was a militant cult or a struggle for the unification of all the Pakhtun tribes? The movement initially adopted an anti- Mughal stance but side by side it brought stratifications and divisions in the society. While taking a relatively progressive and nationalist stance, a number of historians often overlooked some of its conservative and militant aspects. Particularly the religious ideas of Bayazid Ansari are to be analyzed for ascertaining that whether the movement was nationalist in nature and contents or otherwise? The political and Sufi orientation of Bayazid was different from the established orders prevailing at that time among the Pakhtuns. An attempt would be made in the paper to ascertain as how much support he extracted from different tribes in the Pakhtun region. From the time of Mughal Emperor Babur down to Aurangzeb, the whole of the trans-Indus Frontier region, including the plain and the hilly tracts was beyond the effective control of the Mughal authority. The most these rulers, including Sher Shah, himself a Ghalji, did was no more than to secure the hilly passes for transportation. However, the Mughal rulers regarded the area not independent but subordinate to their imperial authority. In the geographical distribution, generally the area lay under the suzerainty of the Governor at Kabul, which was regarded a province of the Mughal Empire.

  • LIBERATION WAR MUSEUM BATALI HILL, CHITTAGONG By
LIBERATION WAR MUSEUM BATALI HILL, CHITTAGONG By Rayeed Mohammad Yusuff 11108022 Seminar II ARC 512 Submitted in partial fulfilment for the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Architecture Department of Architecture BRAC University Fall 2015 LIBERATION WAR MUSEUM | 2 ABSTRACT The year of 1971 is the most significant year in the lives of the Bangladeshis. Our liberation war of 1971 is an event which marks the existence of Bangladesh. It was a war fought by the people and these valiant men and women helped us gain this country. However, in the process of gaining independence, several lives were lost, many girls and women raped and numerous people had to be displaced. The heinous Pakistanis did not hesitate once to kill the innocent people of Bangladesh. It has been almost 44 years since this war was fought and unfortunately, many people are slowly forgetting the importance of this war and the real story behind it. I believe that the people who had been present during the war and have actively participated in it are the ones who can give us the most accurate information about our Liberation War. During this long span of time, we are slowly losing most of them and we urgently need to preserve their experiences and information for the future generation. Chittagong, being a historic site during the Liberation War of 1971, does not have a Liberation War Museum of a large magnitude compared to Dhaka. Chittagong not only contributed during the Liberation War but also played a major role before it. Hence, an attempt was made to design a Liberation War Museum in Batali Hill, Chittagong.

  • Mughal Administration and the Zamindars of Bihar
MUGHAL ADMINISTRATION AND THE ZAMINDARS OF BIHAR ABSTRACT THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE AWARD OF THE DEGREE OF Boctor of ^fjjlogopf)? r^ - >o- in \ BY TAHIR HUSSAIN ANSARl UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF PROF. AFZAL HUSAIN CENTRE OF ADVANCED STUDY DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH 202002 (INDIA) 2008 ABSTRACT In the present Work we have studied the relation of the hereditary chiefs of Bihar with the,. Mughal Imperial authority. The hereditary chiefs were all over Northern India and were known as Zamindar, Kalantaran, buzurg and Marzabans and in the region of Bihar were generally called as Rajas. They played quite an important role in consolidating the Mughal conquest in India. Modem historians such as Moreland, P. Saran, Nurul Hasan and Irfan Habib have discussed in details about their power and position in the Mughal empire. Several others important works on zamindars have also been published in learned journals. Ahsan Raza Khan in particular has made a detailed study of the zamindars of Akbar's reign but so far no detailed study of the zamindars of the suba of Bihar of the Mughal period had been attempted. Therefore in the present work a humble attempt is made to study the relation of the zamindars of Bihar with the Mughal Administration. In the course of study we are able to identify a number of chieftaincies, prominent among them were Kharakpur Raj, the Ujjainias of Bhojpur, the cheros of Palamau, the Kokhra chieftaincy, the Gidhaur chieftaincy, the Darbhanga Raj, the Seor, the Panchet, etc. Some of these chieftaincies were very large having a group of parganas under their sway while others were so small that they held only a part of the pargana.
