Mission The Sunshine Kids Foundation adds quality of life to children with cancer by providing them with exciting, positive group activities, so they may once again do what Kids are meant to do...have fun and celebrate life! Goal We look forward to the day when the Sunshine Kids Foundation will no longer need to exist. Until that time, the entire Sunshine Kids family is dedicated to providing the most exciting activities, trips and events for as many young cancer patients as possible.

2 Sunshine Kids 2017 Annual Report A Message from our Board Chairman Hello Sunshine Kids Family, On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to say thank you to all of our supporters, volunteers, staff and friends for their efforts on behalf of the Sunshine Kids Foundation. The generosity of this group allows thousands of Kids each year to participate in local, regional and national events that enable them to forget about their cancer for a while and enjoy fun activities throughout the nation.

This was a challenging fundraising year with Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma affecting our home office in Houston and our southeast regional office in Florida. Our staff did an amazing job navigating these challenges. Our donors continued to generously support us while also supporting relief efforts in the areas devastated by the storms.

Of course, a very big thank you goes out to Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices who continue to support us on a national level.

This past year we hosted several national trips along with numerous regional and local events. Our national events included trips to Los Angeles, New Orleans, the Texas Hill Country, New York City, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Orlando and Hawaii. Regional and local events were organized coast to coast and included sporting events, hospital parties, Bret with Sunshine Kid Max McMichael Disney events, rodeos and much more. We are also looking forward to the addition of our ski trip this Spring in Beaver Creek, Colorado.

Craig Biggio Baseball Hall of Famer Throughout his Houston Astros career, Hall of Famer, Craig Biggio has supported the Sunshine Kids Foundation. Since 2003, he has proudly served as the National Spokesperson helping to bring joy, laughter and smiles to countless Kids and their families. Together with his wife Patty, they have helped raise millions of dollars through a host of fundraising events making it possible to create more opportunities for children across the country.

J.K. Simmons Award Winning Actor J.K. Simmons has appeared in a diverse range of projects from motion pictures and television to the stage. He won the 2015 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of merciless jazz instructor Fletcher in “Whiplash,” as well as numerous other awards. He proudly wears his Sunshine Kid Pin at many of his awards ceremonies in support of Kids with cancer everywhere.

J.K. and his family have been long-time friends and supporters of the Sunshine Kids Foundation. Not only have he and his wife Michelle hosted the Kids in their home, but he has attended every activity and fundraiser his schedule has allowed.

G.W. Bailey The Sunshine Kids Foundation is profoundly grateful to the Kids and their families who participate in our activities and events. We are grateful as well to our donors who make these activities and events possible. And, of course, to everyone in the Sunshine Kids Family who helps put smiles on the faces of these wonderful Kids who are fighting cancer. However, despite your extraordinary love and support NO activity or event would be possible without the men and women who stand by these Kids every day in their battle. I speak of the heroes in the hospitals and clinics and those who attend various events who are always there to love, support and protect the Kids…their medical representatives. The following is an excerpt from a letter we received from one such caregiver who states succinctly and beautifully what it means to be such a champion.

Dear Sunshine Kids Foundation,

Hi, my name is Dustin Brown and I am a Registered Nurse at The Children’s Hospital at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center. First of all, let me thank you all for the amazing gift you give to these kids, which is giving them a chance to be actual kids. My first Sunshine Kids Event was the 2016 Teen Chicago Getaway. After the multitude of blessings received on this event, I knew that I was hooked! And this was basically from day 1. The second time was recently as we embarked on the 2017 Texas Hill Country Adventure. I thought that the Chicago event had an effect on me but after the Texas Hill Country Adventure, I was truly changed.

My revelation came on the day we were being escorted to the capitol in the classic cars by the police department. As I began to talk to my driver about what I was feeling, I could feel myself becoming emotional and teary eyed. I knew at this moment that all these kids were not thinking about their pain, disease, chemotherapy, blood transfusions, their nausea, all the pills they have to take, the central line sticking out of their chest, or even their CANCER. What an amazing thing to witness the true and apparent joy in a child’s life when they are able to be just a kid.

I have personally seen the kids that I represented in the most vulnerable and life threatening situations. I was reminded of other patients I have had the privilege to know and care for when I saw and met the other kids from other hospitals around the Nation. I think that a lot of the kids, like mine, feel very nervous about events like this because they are a little insecure and their body image is skewed, but the power is having all these kids in a group like this where they all understand each other and can relate.
