ANNUAL REPORT the Sunshine Kids Foundation 2 017 ANNUAL REPORT The Sunshine Kids Foundation “ I can never thank the Sunshine Kids Foundation enough for the opportunities you have given me. Y’all have truly made a bad situation into something so amazing and unforgettable. If it wasn’t for trips like these, I would have never met some amazing friends that can understand and relate to everything. Thank you so much. ”Sunshine Kid – Houma, La Mission The Sunshine Kids Foundation adds quality of life to children with cancer by providing them with exciting, positive group activities, so they may once again do what Kids are meant to do...have fun and celebrate life! Goal We look forward to the day when the Sunshine Kids Foundation will no longer need to exist. Until that time, the entire Sunshine Kids family is dedicated to providing the most exciting activities, trips and events for as many young cancer patients as possible. 2 Sunshine Kids 2017 Annual Report A Message from our Board Chairman Hello Sunshine Kids Family, On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to say thank you to all of our supporters, volunteers, staff and friends for their efforts on behalf of the Sunshine Kids Foundation. The generosity of this group allows thousands of Kids each year to participate in local, regional and national events that enable them to forget about their cancer for a while and enjoy fun activities throughout the nation. This was a challenging fundraising year with Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma affecting our home office in Houston and our southeast regional office in Florida. Our staff did an amazing job navigating these challenges. Our donors continued to generously support us while also supporting relief efforts in the areas devastated by the storms. Of course, a very big thank you goes out to Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices who continue to support us on a national level. This past year we hosted several national trips along with numerous regional and local events. Our national events included trips to Los Angeles, New Orleans, the Texas Hill Country, New York City, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Orlando and Hawaii. Regional and local events were organized coast to coast and included sporting events, hospital parties, Bret with Sunshine Kid Max McMichael Disney events, rodeos and much more. We are also looking forward to the addition of our ski trip this Spring in Beaver Creek, Colorado. Again, thank you to all of our supporters and volunteers who work tirelessly to raise funds and organize such great One of my favorite moments was activities so our Kids can once again, “do what Kids are “ meant to do…have fun and celebrate life.” hearing from the mother of one patient Sincerely, that she saw him smiling more that week (just from all the pictures!) than she had any time since his diagnosis Bret Sanders two years ago. • Cablefax Dailytm Tuesday — November 20, 2018 What the Industry Reads First Volume 29 / No
www.cablefaxdaily.com, Published by Access Intelligence, LLC, Tel: 301-354-2101 Cablefax DailyTM Tuesday — November 20, 2018 What the Industry Reads First Volume 29 / No. 224 Franchise Fees: LFAs Sweating Proposed FCC Changes Cities, towns and public access channels have flooded theFCC with comments on a proposed rulemaking that seeks to include cable-related, in-kind contributions in the definition of franchise fees. The fees are the monies paid for using rights of way to provide service. Under the new definition, in-kind contributions would include things such as unlimited free or discounted cable services for Local Franchise Authorities (LFAs) . Thus those contributions would be subject to the statutory 5% franchise fee cap. While cable’s an obvious fan of the move, franchises, wary of losing money or services, aren’t. “The Commission’s proposals violate the plain language of the statute which authorizes LFAs to both collect franchise fees and to impose franchise requirements on cable operators,” said a joint filing from a number of players, including the cities of Atlanta, Dallas and Boston. Public access channels are concerned that the proposal deems non-capital Public, Educational & Governmental requirements as franchise fees. “Such an action would deci- mate our ability to provide services to our community,” said PhillyCAM, the nonprofit that operates the City of Phila- delphia’s public access TV. The FCC’s Second Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, which makes these tentative conclusions, was adopted 4-0 in September. It addresses issues raised in July after the US Sixth Circuit vacated parts of FCC decisions that had limited the ability of LFAs to regulate non-cable services provided over a mixed use cable system and nixed LFAs imposing non-monetary assessments on cable ops.
