It is a part of the university and it represents its scientific and pedagogical workplace. At present, it is the largest botanical garden in Slovakia with an area of 30 ha and 3500 m2 of greenhouses. The Botanical Garden is a large green area of the metropolis of eastern Slovakia, the town of Košice. It lies in the geomorphological unit Košická kotlina basin, the main entrance is on Mánesova street no. 23, coordinates N 48°44´07´´ E 21°14´20´´. According to our latest own records (in 2008-2019), the average annual temperature at this place is 10.8° C, average temperature in January: - 1.08° C, average temperature in July: 21.3° C, average annual precipitation 531 mm. Compared to the older data, it can be stated that the average temperature in this area has increased slightly in recent years and the total precipitation is lower. The collection fund of the botanical garden consists of plants naturally occurring in the area and other cultivated plants originating from all phytogeographical regions of the world, as well as a wide range of man-made cultivars. There is the largest collection of cacti and cycads in Slovakia, unique orchids or rare specimens of various tropical and subtropical plants, as well as attractions in the form of "living fossils" such as Wollemia, Ginkgo and Sequoiadendron. 652 plant species endangered according to CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) are grown in the botanical garden as well as 39 autochtonous plant species protected by Slovak law. According to the current revision in this catalogue, there are 4136 species, subspecies and cultivars of plants in the collections of the botanical garden. However, this number varies in individual years, as the collections are enriched by further plants, but there is also a natural loss. Plant nomenclature in this catalogue is in accordance with the database (unpublished so far) of J. Kliment from the Botanical Garden of the Commenius University in Bratislava, workplace in Blatnica (Kliment, ined.) and according to the web databases International Plant Name Index (IPNI, www.ipni.org) and Plants of the World online (POWO, http://www.plantsoftheworldonline.org/). Each entry in this catalogue consists of specific or infraspecific name of plant, in the case of cultivars their designation in the sense of ICNCP - International Code for the Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (9th edition, 2016). The localization column shows the location of the species in the botanical garden: 1 - Department of Tropical and Subtropical Flora, 2 - Department of Arboretum, 3 – Department of Ornamental Flora and Utility plants, 4 – Department of Original Flora and Documentation.
