Ha studiato letteratura e poesia francese a New York, completando un dottorato in letterature comparate, focalizzando la sua ricerca sull’elegia moderna e sull’incontro tra il linguaggio A e l’ineffabile: come possiamo parlare di ciò che è inaccessibile al linguaggio? Da studiosa di letteratura ha sempre avuto interesse per quegli autori che hanno cercato di esprimere l’ineffabile utilizzando gli strumenti del linguaggio, cercando, quindi, una via d’uscita da questo, un allargamento, passando, però, all’interno del linguaggio stesso. Uno degli esempi che l’hanno sempre colpita è Franz Kafka, con la sua scrittura che si muove sul confine fra due mondi, uno descrittivo delle parole, l’altro non definito e non definibile, ma solo lambito dal linguaggio. Conosciuta per le sue fotografie, Alice Attie però disegna anche su carta. Questo tipo di opere nascono grazie all'attività di lettura ma anche dal confronto con la pagina bianca, uno spazio vuoto da fare proprio. Riempiendo questo spazio con l’inchiostro, con segni tracciati da gesti ripetuti, l’artista cerca una restituzione visuale dei testi che legge. Per farli propri, sente la necessità di doverli ri-immaginare e ri-configurare sul terreno libero della carta. All’inizio erano alcuni brani di poesia di Virginia Woolf, che avevano toccato in maniera parti- colare le corde più profonde delle sue emozioni. Sentiva il bisogno di farli propri in una maniera che fosse solo sua. Allora Alice Attie inizia a riscrivere questi testi, o meglio, a tracciarli con A destra e sotto l’inchiostro, allontanandosi sempre più dal linguaggio e approdando al disegno. La fascinazione “Keep Going”, 2017, scansioni di foto d'archivio, inchiostro, carta per i processi profondi che legano fra loro pensiero-disegno-gesto la porta a indagare le diverse da quaderno, 21,6 x 14 cm possibilità di approccio alla pagina bianca come terreno in cui inscrivere dei segni, siano essi parole, figure o scarabocchi. Non c’è una St. Stephan Rosemarie Schwarzwälder, Vienna regola fissa in questi “Notes”, sospesi tra linguaggio umano codificato e scrittura automatica e gestuale. I segni possono fiorire sul terreno del foglio come forme organiche e liquide, che conservano memoria della fluidità dell’inchiostro, in cui si celano parole e frasi, a volte leggibili, altre meno. Oppure l’intervento della mano può distendersi su tutta la superficie bianca in linee rette incrociate fra loro, che formano strutture geometriche piane, complesse e intrecciate. Le parole o frasi che si stendono lungo queste direttrici ci restituiscono una misura sia dello spazio della pagina sia del tempo della lezione accademica, ma anche dei processi di pensiero che hanno occupato quel tempo trascorso in aula. Il linguaggio rimane, quindi, sospeso dalla sua natura di codice univoco e diventa forma visuale per cercare di esprimere l’ineffabile. L’atto stesso di prendere appunti, del resto, è il tentativo di bloccare i concetti, per poterli portare via con sé e farli rivivere in spazi e tempi diversi. Il confine tra scrittura e disegno si assottiglia sempre di più e avviene come una trasformazione sulla pagina bianca. In modo simile ai Class Notes, nasce anche la serie “Take Care of Yourself – Series Foucault”. Non si tratta più di “appunti” di incontri accademici, ma di riflessioni personali condotte da Alice Attie nello spazio intimo del proprio studio durante la lettura delle lezioni che Michel Foucault tenne al Collège de France tra il 1982 e il 1984. I disegni sono un invito a “prendersi cura di sé”: secondo Foucault fu questa l’ultima frase pronunciata da Socrate ai suoi allievi prima di essere giustiziato con la cicuta. Il solco dell’inchiostro traccia più e più volte la frase “Take care of TRA FOTOGRAFIA yourself”. Alice Attie’s ink drawings involve the minuscule. They often explore the territory between writing and drawing, where the two over- lap. Her drawings are meditations in ink that allow tiny marks to accumulate over long sustained periods of time. Engaging repetition, rhythm and gradual change, she allows these minuscule words, figures, numbers and marks to accrue and grow on the paper. When presenting a landscape of numbers or letters or of a language that is not real, she is inspi- red to push and suspend meaning, allowing it to slip into visual abstraction. In the last lectures that Michel Foucault gave at the College de France, from 1982 to1984, he addressed the practices and disciplines surrounding the care of the self. In these lectures, given while Foucault himself was dying of AIDS, he pondered Socrates’ last utterance to his disciple Crito: Take Care of Yourself. From that statement, Foucault embarked on a study of the idea of care: care of the body, care of the other, Alice Attie, Take Care of Yourself - Series Foucault, 2014 care of the spirit and specifically, care of the freedom to speak freely, from a place of truth. The drawings in this series are comprised of repetitions of the phrase Take Care of Yourself. They become contemplative sites of linguistic ambiguity and transgression. For Attie, language can be thought of as a large opening through which we advance, a space where meaning may unravel, be dissembled or itself dissolve.

    For Immediate Release PROXIMITIES ALICE ATTIE September 18 – October 18, 2014 Alice Attie, Iceland, 2009 Gelatin silver print, 14 3/4 x 14 3/4 inches New York City – An exhibition of recent work by Alice Attie will be on view at Howard Greenberg Gallery from September 18 - October 18, 2014. Proximities will present 12 photographs and ten drawings from 2011 – 2014. Known predominantly as a poet and for her drawings, the exhibition represents a rare showing of Attie’s photography. An opening reception with the artist will be held on Thursday, September 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. Intimate views of meadows form the basis of Attie’s series of photographs started four years ago in Iceland. Using a 1937 Rolleiflex camera that belonged to her father, Attie has also traversed fields in New Hampshire, upstate New York, and Central Park to ponder nature as visual poetry. Weeds, wildflowers, trees, grass and leaves, fill her lens and immerse the viewer. “I feel that the camera inspires a deeper sense of self,” says Attie. “On a very visceral level, it leads me to imagine my own absence in a sublime world.” Attie’s ink drawings involve the miniscule, and explore the territory between writing and drawing and where the two overlap. Engaging repetition, rhythm and gradual change, she allows tiny words, figures, numbers and images to accrue and grow on the paper. Whether presenting a landscape of numbers or a language that is not real, she is inspired to trespass over a threshold where language becomes something visual.
