Introduction The objectives of the Racing Rules are: A. To provide clear, precise, and universally understandable rules and drawings. B. To keep each boat as equal, simple and inexpensive as possible by maintaining its One-Design features. C. To provide a level playing field so that race results are determined by each team’s sailing skills. II. Definitions The following definitions apply to the Racing Rules: A. “Championship Regattas”. All Regional Championship Regattas, the North American Championship Regatta, and all other BCA-sanctioned regattas such as the MacAlpine- Downie/Gibbs Regatta shall be considered “Championship” Regattas for the purpose of these rules. B. The term “team” shall denote the group of sailors sailing a single boat. C. The term “helmsman” refers to the team member controlling the tiller. D. The term “crew” refers to all other members of the team aside from the helmsman. E. The term “Family Member” refers to the spouse, son or daughter of a Full Member, an Associate Member, or a Lifetime Member, provided the son or daughter is below the age of 21. F. 2019 One Design Classes and Sailor Survey [email protected] One Design Classes and Sailor Survey One Design sailing is a critical and fundamental part of our sport. In late October 2019, US Sailing put together a survey for One Design class associations and sailors to see how we can better serve this important constituency. The survey was sent via email, as a link placed on our website and through other USSA Social media channels. The survey was sent to our US Sailing members, class associations and organizations, and made available to any constituent that noted One-Design sailing in their profile. Some interesting observations: • Answers are based on respondents’ perception of or actual experience with US Sailing. • 623 unique comments were received from survey respondents and grouped into “Response Types” for sorting purposes • When reviewing data, please note that “OTHER” Comments are as equally important as those called out in a specific area, like Insurance, Administration, etc. • The majority of respondents are currently or have been members of US Sailing for more than 5 years, and many sail in multiple One-Design classes • About 1/5 of the OD respondents serve(d) as an officer of their primary OD class; 80% were owner/drivers of their primary OD class; and more than 60% were members of their primary OD class association. • Respondents to the survey were most highly concentrated on the East and West coasts, followed by the Mid- West and Texas – though we did have representation from 42 states, plus Puerto Rico and Canada. • Most respondents were male.

McCarthy, Commodore www.lmsrf.org LMSRF's web page for the past ten years was the organization's second generation web site and had grown very long in the tooth. Chuck Goes, whom some of you know from Belmont Yacht Club or from his Race Committee work, volunteered to help LMSRF build a new web site. Chuck’s day job is web hosting and design, along with computer consulting, at his company, Digital Interplay (contact Chuck at [email protected] or at 773.743.9843 if you are in need of help for your own business). We chose the platform of Joomla!, as this web site software allows our volunteers to make changes anywhere, anytime, without needing anything more than an internet connection. Users don’t need any special software to make updates and changes. The goals of the new web site are simple, to make it easier to navigate (check), make it easier to maintain by assigning committee chairs the pages they are responsible for maintaining (check, check), add a bit of fun with links to Maritime Museums and Lighthouses (check), but most importantly to make it easier for you to get what you need (big check). Examples of this last one are that you will find applications for Grants-In-Aid and the Hall of Fame on the web site, along with the requirements of both programs. With over 60 pages of information, we hope you find it informative, helpful and will help your club and/or foster your own sailing.

Pirates on the Pungo Sailboat Regatta May 18-20 Belhaven, NC NOTICE OF RACE The Pirates on the Pungo Regatta is an annual fundraising being sponsored by The Belhaven Community Chamber of Commerce. Proceeds from this event will help support 501(3) c charities and Chamber initiatives. 1. RULES The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing. 2. ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY 2.1 The regatta is open to any sailboat in seaworthy condition. 2.2 Registration may be entered online with payment by credit card or PayPal at Regatta Network or by sending the registration, along with a check, together with the required fees, to Belhaven Community Chamber of Commerce, PO Box 147, Belhaven, NC 27810. 2.3 A special “no-charge” entry fee is available for boats that will be sailed by a skipper and crew 18 or younger. See the information on fees below, and the registration form on the website. 2.4 Late entries will be accepted until 8:30 AM on Saturday, May 19 at the Town Docks in Belhaven, the location of the Skipper’s Meeting. 3. CLASSES 3.1 Sailing dinghies and Multihulls will compete both Saturday and Sunday, using Portsmouth ratings transposed to PHRF Ratings, on distance courses in the Pantego Creek, the Pungo River and Pungo Creek. 3.2 Keelboats will compete Saturday and Sunday, using PHRF ratings time on distance courses in the Pantego Creek, Pungo River and Pungo Creek. Keelboats must have a valid NC-PHRF certificate or obtain a temporary rating from event organizers.

2019 United States Sunfish Class Association Regatta Schedule Welcome to the return of a comprehensive Sunfish Class schedule booklet. If you know of an event, no matter if big or small, we want it included in here annually. River Races. Clinics. Junior Regattas. Regular Regattas. Fleet Series. Region Championships—we need hosts for 2020. We want the sites and dates for 2020 Region Championships confirmed NO LATER than December 15, 2019. For some Regions this is a big change; we’ve got all year to adjust and get just dates and hosts set. We need bids for the 2020 North American Championship. They are due as soon as possible. The host is intended to be announced at the 2019 Sunfish North American Championships at James Island Yacht Club in Charleston, SC in June. We need bids for the 2020 Womens North American Championship. They are due as soon as possible. Contact the Womens Coordinator. The host is intended to be announced at the 2019 Sunfish North American Championships at James Island Yacht Club in Charleston, SC in June. Many will be happy to learn the 2020 World Masters is returning to Florida in the late winter. A tentative host is in place, as is for the 2020 Midwinters which will be completely free of any Pan American Games involvement. May 2014 Volume 44 Number 5 Greetings! The sailing season is fully underway. The Commodore’s Corner The only program we are still waiting to start is By Tim Flaherty the Junior Program next month. Intrepid dinghy [email protected] sailors have braved the chilly air and water temps in April, and the keelboat program has faced some breezy and challenging days. Even the cruisers have had a couple of events and braved this cool spring. May will be particularly exciting for SMSA because this is the month when we expect to take delivery of our new (to us, anyway) fleet of 420 International Dinghies. We will have six of these boats that will come in very handy for our Junior Program and for adult and kid’s sail training. We expect them to be available for members to take out on Thursday night races, and we will put a system in place where a member can check out a boat for a leisurely sail whenever they aren't in use by one of our programs. The 420s are a big part of our goal of making sure SMSA is the best, most complete sailing organization in the area, if not the state. All of our members will have access to sailing and to the water, and our children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews will always have a place to learn and grow as sailors and as people at SMSA. I'd like to thank everyone who came out to make Opening Day a success. Special thanks go to Rear Commodore Jimmy Yurko, Facilities Co-Chair Jolie Homsher and the crew they put together to get the clubhouse ready and to put on the days festivities.

She was out this past weekend on the race committee boat helping Ed Hurst run the race, and she's also interested in racing. Remember to pick your opportunities wisely and take plenty of ﬂuids to stay hydrated. Sailors…and carpenters needed! Don Moser and I will work this Saturday to dig and pour the 14 footings for our deck extension project and a workday is planned for 8 am Sunday July 7th . On the 7th please bring your carpenter’s tools as we will be assembling the frame and putting the decking down.
