I I I I I I I I I I 1 CHAPTER 1 ·1NTRODUCTION: Klipfonteinrand is a rocky outcrop situated in the Cedarberg in the Clanwilliam district, about 240km north of Cape Town (Fig. 1). The outcrop is located close to a geological and vegetation interface (Taylor, 1978), which is visible nearby. The Bokkeveld/Table Mountain Supergroup interface matches well with the Karoo/ Fynbos ecotone in the area. The sandstone ridge of Klipfonteinrand, harbors two prominent cave sites, Klipfonteinrand 1 (KFRl) and Klipfonteinrand 2 (KFR2), which lie within 50m of one another, (Plate 1), on the coordinates 32° 04' south 19° 08' east (3219AA PAKHUIS map). This general region of the Olifants River catchment- basin has been subjected to extensive archaeological research, especially in the field of rock art; the farm of Boontjieskloof, by now well-known archaeologically (Yates; Golsen and Hall 1983, Johnson; Rabinowitz and Sieff 1959, Maggs 1967) , lies within a few kilometers of Klipfonteinrand (Fig. 2). Both KFR 1 and KFR 2 have been excavated by the University of Cape Town's Department of Archaeology and have been shown to contain substantial deposits, of which KFR 1 is the deeper. In fact , the latter has a cultural sequence that can be traced back to the "Middle Stone Age" (Thackeray, 1977). The "Later Stone Age" lithic material from this site has been analyzed by Anne I. Thackeray as an Honors project (Thackeray, 1977). The smaller cave, KFR 2, with which this project is concerned, was excavated as part of the Spatial Archaeology Research Unit's bedding and ash programme, geared towards understanding late Holocene settlement and subsistence strategies in the western Cape. 0 l<ft,S C ~.... The first, in which I participated, was carried out in June/ July 1987 under the direction of John Parkington and Cedric Poggenpoel with student volunteers from the University of Cape Town. A second excavation was undertaken in February 1989 by myself, with the assistance of Royden Yates, Tony Manhire and Michael Taylor, in order to complete the excavation of two one metre squares and to collect suitable charcoal samples for radiocarbon dating.

    ELEPHANTHROPES OF THE CEDERBERG When elephants were people Andrew Paterson Paintings of elephant-headed people in the Cederberg are rare and only two such sites, out of a total of some 300 sites depicting over 800 elephant paintings, have been found to date. Two other sites with elephant-headed people have been found in the Drakensberg (Fig. 1). The unusual, elephant-headed constructs leave one wondering: why would the San artist paint such enigmatic images? Paintings of animal-headed people have been recorded throughout San ethnography, right from the earliest meeting in Lesotho between Joseph Orpen and a Bushman called Qing in 1873. Qing revealed the mystery of the San mythology to Orpen when they visited paintings in the rock shelters of the Drakensberg. Orpen was shown a painting in Fig. 1: Elephant-headed people found in the Cederberg and Drakensberg a shelter called Melikane that consisted of dancing San figures with antelope heads bending forward. A copy of these dancing antelope- headed people was later made by Patricia Vinnicombe in 1959. The er sult is a region with great depth and diversity of archaeological information. In this paper I discuss three general observations that arise from the integration of data across this region. The first is that redundancy in site occupation is limited: even where many sites are excavated in a small area, understanding of the regional sequence cannot be assumed to be complete. The es cond is that humans did not live in rock shelters: a focus on rock shelters alone, even where these are abundant, produces a skewed picture of occupational and demographic histories. The third is that the coast and its hinterland are intimately bound: interaction between the two zones is variable, and even where it is limited this observation is important to the understanding of both.

We begin by defining the terms symbol and symbolic behavior and by considering whether this behavior is unique to humans. We then look at the archaeological signatures of symbolic behavior. Next we consider the earliest archaeological evidence and the implications for hominin cognitive evolution as well as specialized topics (e.g., taphonomy, music, personal ornaments and archaeology of the body cave art, burials etc.). Finally, we conclude by reviewing what we have discussed over the past 15 weeks in the context of using symbolic behavior as a vehicle for understanding what makes us human. Grade Scale: Your grade will be determined by weekly exams, each of which will cover information presented in the lecture and in assigned readings.
