Patrick Dzimiri a Senior Lecturer at the University of Venda, Department of Development Studies, Politics and International Relations Unit. He is an experienced international relations and political scientist with exceptional leadership, research and 14 years of University lectureship experience, as well as a proven history of engagement with the higher education teaching and learning institutions. Patrick has published in peer-reviewed journals and read papers at both international and national conferences. Having researched broadly on issues relating to human rights, human security and humanitarian affairs, of late, Patrick’s research focus has slowly shifted more towards community-specific investigations, with the target of yielding tangible society or people oriented research outcomes, in areas of teaching and learning, migration politics, governance and electoral politics in Africa, peace, conflict and development, democratization and social change as well as uncovering issues of inequalities in multi-cultural, multi-racial and multi-ethnic social settings. Patrick is a highly qualified and experienced social scientist with a strong history of engagement with the higher education teaching and learning institutions. He joined the University of Venda as a Lecturer in July 2009 after working as a Part-Time Assistant Lecturer for a period of one (1) year at the University of Pretoria and three (3) years at the University of Zimbabwe. Patrick’s teaching career at institutions of higher learning spans a period of fourteen (14) years including the time he served the as a Graduate-Teaching Assistant in 2003 to 2005,and later as a substantive lecturer in the Strategic Studies Unit of the History Department in 2006. He holds a PhD in International Relations from the University of Pretoria (2016), Post-graduate Diploma in Higher Education Teaching and Learning from Stellenbosch University (2015), Executive Certificate in Defense and Security Management from Wits University (2006), Master of Science Degree in International Relations from the University of Zimbabwe (2005) and BA Degree (2003) from the same institution. Since then, his work has been revolving around research, teaching and learning in institutions of higher learning. Patrick’s PhD focused on human security and he researched on the; “Application of the Responsibility to Protect norm on the International Community’s Response to the Humanitarian crises in Zimbabwe and Sudan’s Darfur Region”. His study explored the extent to which the normative principle of RtoP has guided the international community in mitigating on humanitarian crisis of political making using Darfur and Zimbabwe as test cases. Between the periods, June 2017 and December 2017, Patrick joined the University of Pretoria’s Centre for Governance Innovation as a post-doctoral fellow. At the Centre for Governance, he was also involved in the teaching of a joint Honours Programme on African, European and Regional Politics. He has published fourteen (14) research in the form book chapters and journal articles in internationally acclaimed journals. Dzimiri has also supervised one (1) PhD and ten (10) Masters candidates. He has presented three (3) papers at national and twelve (12) at International Conferences and one (1) at an institutional workshop. In 2015, he had a Research Scientific Visit to the University of Wageningen Department of Humanitarian Studies-Amsterdam, Netherlands, between October 20-30. At Wageningen, he delivered a lecture-on Africa and the Responsibility to Protect where he focused on Africa’s commitment to mitigating humanitarian crisis on the continent and the paper was well received. Patrick has received a number of awards as recognition for his academic work. In 2017, he was awarded the Mellon Grant for Post-Doctoral Fellowship by the University of Pretoria. In 2016, he got an Excellent Paper Award at the International Conference on Social Science & Humanities (ICSCH) -Saint Petersburg, Russia. In 2015, he scooped the University of Venda, Vice Chancellor’s Excellence in Teaching Award for the lecturer category in the School of Human and Social Sciences. Lastly, in 2014, he was Awarded the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung-Grant to participate in the World International Studies Conference-Frankfurt, Germany. With respect to academic citizenship, he is a member of the following, the South African Association of Political Studies (SAAPS), International Political Science Association (IPSA) and International Humanitarian Studies Association (IHASA). As part of additional academic energumens or responsibilities at the University of Venda, he is serving in several capacities as a member of the Research Ethics Committee, a committee charged with ensuring that all the research proposals comply with ethical standards governing the conduct of research. He is also a member of the University of Venda’s Internationalisation of Higher Education Committee. With regards to service to other universities, he has served as a review for a number of journals and has been recently appointed Guest-Editor for the African Union Journal -Special Issue for December 2019. Regarding, community engagement, and services to other universities, he serves as an external examiner for theUniversity of South Africa (UNISA), University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg and the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Patrick has represented the University of Venda on engagements such as the Africa Futures & Innovation program (AFI) workshop held at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) in February 2019 and the Round Table discussion entitled, Are AU Roadmaps Africa’s solution to political crises? hosted by the Institute of Global Dialogue in 2012 and Patrick is currently pursuing Teaching Advancement Fellowship Programme at University (TAU), offered by the Higher Education Learning and Teaching Association of Southern Africa (HELTASA). He is also participating in the Social Justice and Quality in Higher Education that’s brings together a team of researchers/academics from Rhodes University, University of Venda and Lancaster University. .
