1) Name: SnagIt Provider: TechSmith Corp. Website: http://www.techsmith.com/snagit.asp Country: USA Description: SnagIt is a screenshot program that operates under the Windows operating system. SnagIt replaces the native Print Screen function with additional features. It contains most features needed by technical writers (scrolling page screenshots and automatic 'trim edges' function, for example). Newer versions also allow batch capture of embedded items such as links, pictures, and multimedia. The user can set parameters and keyboard shortcuts to capture particular types of data, which are stored in a folder called "Catalog" by default. The user can also specify another destination folder. SnagIt can also follow links in web pages, capturing the specified data from the linked pages, as well. SnagIt Accessories extend its features. For example, Output enables the user to upload screen capture onto one's own Flickr account. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. Users can tweak their clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The created images can be used however they like. Users can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with their friends. Website: http://maps.google.com/ Country: USA Description: Google Maps is a web mapping service application and technology provided by Google, free (for non-commercial use), that powers many map-based services, including the Google Maps website, Google Ride Finder, Google Transit and maps embedded on third- party websites via the Google Maps API. By using the Google Maps API, it is possible to embed Google Maps site into an external website, on to which site specific data can be overlaid. Google Maps offers street maps, a route planner for traveling by foot, car, or public transport and an urban business locator for numerous countries around the world. Google Maps uses JavaScript extensively. As the user drags the map, the grid squares are downloaded from the server and inserted into the page. When a user searches for a business, the results are downloaded in the background for insertion into the side panel and map; the page is not reloaded. Locations are drawn dynamically by positioning a red pin on top of the map images. Google Maps, like many other Google web applications can be personalized and used by mobiles too. The software takes a picture or video of the user's computer screen and uploads it to the Web, FTP, computer or clipboard. A URL is automatically created and can be shared with others to view or access the uploaded file. Jing is compatible with Macintosh and Windows.[4] Users are required to sign up for an account before using the software. Its simple format and the ability to quickly upload screencasts has made Jing useful for virtual reference in libraries. In 2009 the provider, TechSmith released Jing Pro, a paid premium version of Jing. The user defines the area of the screen or the window that is to be captured or the whole screen can be recorded instead. This is set before the recording begins. It is possible to record audio from a microphone or your speakers and Camtasia Studio allows you to place your webcam's video footage on the screen. The presenter carries out all steps of the demonstration in sequence and is able to jump from one application to another without interrupting the recording process. The presenter is able to stop recording with a hotkey combination at any time. Newer versions of Camtasia offer the option to draw a circle around the cursor whenever the mouse is clicked, to better illustrate the actions of the presenter. After the presentation has been captured, the presenter is able to revise it by cutting and/or pasting different parts, as needed. In addition, the presenter is also able to overlay their voice, as well as sound effects or music onto the presentation. The program allows to be stored in its own proprietary format, which is only readable by Camtasia itself; this format allows for fairly small file sizes, even for longer presentations. Camtasia also allows the generated video stream to be exported to common video formats which can be read by most computers, even if the Camtasia software is not installed, such as MPEG2 or MPEG4. It was originally released by Apple in 1999 as a Mac OS 8 application bundled with the first FireWire-enabled consumer Apple model – iMac DV.[1] Since version 3, iMovie has been a Mac OS X only application bundled in the iLife suite of Macintosh applications.[2] iMovie imports video footage to the Mac using either the FireWire interface on most MiniDV format digital video cameras, the USB port, or by importing the files from a hard drive. From there, the user can edit the video clips, add titles, and add music. Effects include basic color correction and video enhancement tools, and transitions such as fade-in, fade-out, and slides. It is developed by Apple Inc. as a part of the iLife software package. GarageBand is a streamlined digital audio workstation (DAW) and music sequencer, which can record and play back multiple tracks of audio. Built in audio filters allow the audio track to be enhanced for recording guitar instruments, etc. The tuning system can also effectively imitate the auto-tune effect when tuned to the maximum. GarageBand can play virtual instruments, used for creating songs or playing music live using over 100 sampled or synthesized instruments, which can be played using a USB or MIDI keyboard connected to the computer, or using an on-screen virtual keyboard. Additional instruments are available in the five GarageBand Jam Packs, which are separate expansion packs offered by Apple. GarageBand can import MIDI files, and offers piano roll or notation-style editing and playback. Whilst offering a comprehensive control over MIDI files, Garageband does not include several key features; notably the ability to change tempo manually, though many of these shortcomings have been addressed with each successive release of Garageband. A new feature of GarageBand '09 is the ability to download pre-recorded music lessons from GarageBand's Lesson Store for guitar and piano. There are two types of lesson available in the Lesson Store: Basic Lessons which are a free download and Artist Lessons which must be purchased. The first Basic Lessons for both guitar and piano are included with GarageBand to start with. In both types of lesson a music teacher presents the lesson which is in a special format offering high quality video and audio instructions. The lessons include a virtual guitar or piano which demonstrates finger position and a musical notational area to show the correct musical notations.
