It highlights major activities and progress made under each component or strategic objective during the period under the review. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Key progress/achievements during this reporting period include the following: In Timbuktu Region, 556 animals comprising 157 cattle, 394 sheep, and 05 goats were sold by 14 POs and 70 individuals for an estimated total value of 49 095 000 CFA or $ 98,190 USD based on a ratio of $1:500 CFA; 17,858 animals were vaccinated and the L4G-supported SVPPs continue to have profits; 88 plots were planted in dual purpose crops (for food and forage) in anticipation of our on-going Farmer Field Schools (FFS) 916 multi-nutritional licking blocks, worth 680,250 CFA ($1,360.5) were produced by our clients (mostly women) for sales for additional revenues 3 049 animals, comprising 522 cattle, 2 524 sheep, and 03 goats were purchased for fattening by 349 individual traders and members from different POs 1,015 animals (cattle, sheep, and goats) were sold to the domestic market for a total value of 113 925 500 CFA or about $227, 851 USD; Regarding the access to finance, three POs succeeded in obtaining loans worth 7,850,000 CFA or $15,7000 from MFIs. In the meantime, three persevering livestock entrepreneurs completed their business plans and submitted to the banks through IESC. If successful, they should be able to receive a total loan value of 90.8 Million CFA or $182,000 USD based on a collateral payment of 10.8 Million CFA or $22,000 USD L4G undertook an exploratory trip to Ivory Coast and the prospects look good. This trip revealed that many traders in Ivory Coast would be interested in buying livestock from Mali, provided certain conditions are met. Our clients with the support from L4G are currently going through the negotiations so that firm contracts can be signed before the Tabaski holiday, which is September 1st. Tentatively, the demand for sheep in Abidjan alone for this Tabaski is estimated at between 100,000 and 150, 000 sheep heads; L4G staff and clients met in Sevare for the second quarterly learning event. Clients shared their perspective on the project performance and made recommendations for improvement; L4G in late July met in Segou and elaborated their 2018 programming workplan. The plan was further discussed with most implementing partners in Bamako who made pertinent recommendations before endorsing it. Monthly Report No. 34, August 2017 | Mali Livestock for Growth (L4G) 1 TIMBUKTU EXPANSION: KEY ACTIVITIES FOR THE PERIOD 1. ACHIEVEMENTS Two members representing the POs from the Timbuktu Region participated in the Ivory Coast Exploratory Market visit in July. Together with the other delegates from Koro, Bankass, and Djenne, they explored the existing market opportunities for the upcoming Tabaski festival. Several business contacts were established and the prospects for higher exports of livestock to Ivory Coast look promising. 3. NEXT STEPS The two delegates will share the information with their respective bases and the POs will decide whether it would economically be profitable for them to export to Ivory Coast or not. This trip in particular revealed that the market demand for sheep during the Tabaski period for Abidjan alone would fluctuate between 100,000 to 150,000 sheep heads, hence representing a total market value of about 9 Billiion CFA or $18 Million USD. Monthly Report No. 34, August 2017 | Mali Livestock for Growth (L4G) 2 COMPONENT 1. LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION 1. ACTIVITIES Key activities under this compoent included: Monitoring of SVPP schemes (Koro and Bankass): about 17,858 animals were vaccinated against several eradicating diseases. The combined gross margin from these two SVPP amounted to $2, 501 USD in August against $2, 518 USD in July. Vaccination campaign was slow, however, due to herders leaving the area on transhumance paths. Table 2 below provides details on the vaccines administered, revenues, and profits realized by the SVPPs; Table 2: SVPP reported activities and financial returns for the month of August 2017 # of Animals Price Per Total revenue Gross margin Vaccine Animal Vaccinated Vaccination (FCFA) (FCFA) Pastobov + Symptovac Cattle 5 920 100 592 000 414 400 Pastovin Sheep/Goat 11 938 100 1 193 800 835 660 Total 17 858 1 785 800 1 250 060 L4G commissioned a diagnostic study of the SVPP by Dr. Fatou and Dr. Diallo of ICD.
