FALL 2016 WINNERS OF LDEI’S 2016 M.F.K. Fisher Awards for Excellence in Culinary Writing BOOK CATEGORY WINNER GRAND PRIZE WINNER PRINT CATEGORY WINNER Maria Speck Dianne Jacob Kathleen Squires Simply Ancient Grains The Meaning of Mangoes Comfort Me with Egg Creams ALSO INSIDE | EDIBLE LONDON TOURS | LDEI BOARD IN LOUISVILLE | "CHOPPED" Global Culinary Initiative The St. Louis Chapter’s “Sacred Foods of India” event offered insights into the spiritual connections of India’s food tradi- tions. Nina Mukerjee Furstenau (St. Louis), LDEI’s 2014 MFK Award recipient for her book, Biting Through the Skin, shared this from her experiences in her Indian heritage. “Grandmothers throughout Indian history knew light, soothing, easily digested food, called sattvic in Ayurveda, were high in prana, or the universal life force. Using food to create a mind-body balance in support of a spiritual path is ancient.” See page 31 for an article about the St. Louis Chapter’s event. London Dames host “Edible London” FROM THE EDITOR Dames Are Golden! FALL 2 O16 With the Summer Olympics in Rio now inked into the record books, it’s LDEI’s time to award some gold medals of our own. On the cover and on pages 4 to 8, you can read about the win- ners of LDEI’s M.F.K. Fisher Awards Contest—two gold and IN THIS ISSUE two silver medals were won by Dames. While this is a fantastic accomplishment, FEATURES I can tell you from experience that every Dame I’ve interviewed for features in the 4 M.F.K. Fisher Awards Quarterly is a winner worthy of gold. Just by being a member proves that the women of Les Dames are golden! Each member of 9 Green Tables LDEI was chosen by her chapter for having Board Meeting in Louisville excelled in her field and continues piling 10 up accomplishments to honor us all. Just read the “Member Milestones” in every 12 Edible London II issue to see evidence of this. And read about the Dames who are judges 15 Cotswolds or have appeared on “Chopped” (see pages 20 to 22); Dames who sponsor Legacy Award winners (page 19); 18 Legacy Awards Winners London Dames who hosted the fabulous “Edible London” and Cotwolds tours (pages 12 to 17); and all the other 19 Dames on "Chopped" Dames mentioned in every issue of the Quarterly. Let’s not forget the 25 LDEI Past Presidents who have led our Global Culinary Initiative organization into the 21st century. They really DO wear 30 “gold” medals—the Past Presidents’ medals (at left). Just look for them at the Washington Conference. Now back to those Olympic “gold” medals. The ones DEPARTMENTS ceremoniously draped over the winners’ heads in Rio weighed approximately 500 grams. But 494 grams 22 Chapter News of that is silver, leaving only 6 grams of gold or about “um por cento” (“one percent,” in Member Milestones Portuguese). That’s about $261 worth of gold. 26 For my money, I’ll take a Dame any day—and avoid the years of training required to win an 31 Submission Guidelines Olympic medal. How much is a Dame worth? Well, if you weigh 100 pounds (and I passed that weight class years ago), that’s 45,359 grams. Gold is currently selling for $43 per gram, so that means you are worth just shy of $2 mil- lion dollars. Whoa!! Tell that to management the next time you Cover Photo Credits Dianne Jacob photo by Owen Rubin ask for a raise! You are pure gold!
