Former RAF Coltishall, Norwich - | Foreword “For over sixty years R.A.F. Coltishall played an active part in Norfolk life generating signifi cant opportunities for employment and investment for North Norfolk & Broadland. The closure in November 2006 was a signifi cant blow to the local economy and following years of inactivity Norfolk County Council seized the chance to take ownership of the former airbase to rejuvenate and safeguard an historic environment whilst bringing forward new jobs and investment opportunities to the area. In purchasing the site from the Ministry of Justice for four million pounds in January 2013 we are convinced that the price paid for the 600 plus acre site represents excellent value for money for Norfolk’s council taxpayers. Work has been carried out since the purchase to develop a detailed Development Vision for this important and sensitive site and has involved key stakeholders from the local community to help shape the blueprint for the next ten years. This includes more defi ned layouts and options for employment and residential areas along with clearer strategies for enterprise & investment, accessibility, heritage and green infrastructure. In developing this piece of work a number of individual schemes and projects will emerge. Each project will need to be the subject of a detailed Business Case and planning permission. The first one to be delivered to Culdrose, which is where the RAF established the RAF Sea King Training Unit (RAFSKTU) in the first event, was XZ586. I was the first to fly it on 17th Feb 1978. There, in accordance with the Franco-Polish Military Alliance of 1921 and the amendments of 1939, Polish Air Force units were to be re-created. However, the French headquarters was hesitant about creating large Polish air units, and instead most Polish pilots were attached to small units, so-called keys.     Former RAF Coltishall Timeline Prehistoric and Roman Given the positioning of the airfield above the confluence of the River Bure and its tributaries it may be expected that the airfield would contain evidence of prehistoric activity. Two possible ring ditches – possible Bronze Age burial mounds - were recorded within the airfield, although these are far from certain. Later prehistoric and Roman Cropmarks in the arable land around the airfield indicate extensive later prehistoric and/or Roman co-axial field systems, enclosures and major boundaries, some of which are likely to continue into the airfield itself. There is evidence of a Roman settlement to the south. The line of a major Roman road, running from Denver on the fen edge to a Roman town at Brampton and then on to Wayford Bridge, Smallburgh, passes through the north side of the airfield. Medieval and later Faint cropmarks on the airfield appear to represent fields associated with the former farmstead of Batley Green and the linear common or moor “Scottow Moor” as shown on the 1 st Edition Ordnance Survey map (1889-1891). This feature may have been incorporated into the designed landscape around Scottow Hall. 1938 Plans for an airfield were announced, to be built on a large flat potato field. 1939 “Expansion Period” Standard Function airfield built as a bomber base. There were plans for six hangars (although one was destroyed during construction and the sixth never built), a perimeter track and grass flying field. Initially called “Scottow”, it was later called “Coltishall” after the second-nearest railway station. Buxton was closer, but that might have been confused with Buxton in Derbyshire.

    Clare in WW2 / The Emergency The Co Clare War Dead Individual Profiles WW2 D Day 1944 - The 2nd US Rangers By Ger Browne The aim of this project is to find out how many men and women from Clare took part in WW2, and the effect of the war on Clare. It is hoped that an extension will be added to the Great War Memorial in Ennis that will include the names of the Clare War Dead from WW2 / The Emergency.
