Previous Experience/References McCallum High School Fulmore Middle School

Testimonial I am Meredith McAlmon, director of the Fulmore Middle School Orchestra and Classical Guitar programs. My orchestra students at Fulmore Middle School have been included in the Austin Chamber Music Center school coaching program for seven years now, and we are looking forward to participating again this coming year. This last year, two ensembles (a quintet and a quartet/nine students total) from my advanced orchestra were able to participate in this program. For eight of the nine students involved, this was their first time to experience playing in a small ensemble with weekly coaching and rehearsals. These students played in the ACMC concerts in December and performed again in May, both at Fulmore and as part of the Austin Chamber Music Center Spring recital. The quintets also competed in the Austin Independent School District Solo and Ensemble competition in May and both groups received first place ratings and were awarded medals. One of the quintets has also performed for visiting students from other schools and for the Adelante Dual Language State Conference held in Austin in March of this year. The coaches provided by ACMC are the best. As professional players, they treat the students as professionals as well, without losing sight of the fact that they are middle school students. The students were coached with great respect for their skills and talents, and rose to meet the demands that were placed on them. All of my students looked forward to their weekly chamber music day, and I would often hear them playing together out in the halls before class or during lunch. The benefits of this program have been far-reaching, not just for my students, but for the cause of chamber music in the Austin community. Parents of the students who have been involved in the outreach program have become aware of the value of chamber music, and are now starting to attend the Austin Chamber Music Center concerts. Fulmore is a Title I inner city urban school - meaning that approximately 75% of its students are at or below the national poverty level; is predominately Hispanic (about 63%) and has students from diverse economic and racial backgrounds due to its also being a magnet school for Humanities and Law. The orchestra and chamber music program at Fulmore is well represented by students from all of its diverse backgrounds, and many families are reached by our music program and drawn into the life of the school that might not otherwise be involved. It is my firm hope that Fulmore will be able to continue to participate in the chamber music outreach program for years to come.

Testimonial My students are most engaged when they are responsible for their learning; when they are active learners, when they own their learning. The drama based workshop by Creative Action provided this exact type of experience for my students. By creating an atmosphere of mutual respect and creative freedom, the presenters taught these 5th graders more about bullying than any curriculum I have ever used. They saw, they felt, they problem solved. When they reflected afterwards, their comments showed the internalization of the concepts presented, not just definitions. -5th Grade Teacher, Debra Ambrose, Joslin Elementary 2/25/2015

Testimonial "For the past 2 years I had the pleasure of working with Nina Medieros and her amazing Media Awareness Project (MAP) team in afterschool programming at Blazier Elementary School. MAP has been working their mission, "to empower youth to use media for community engagement, cultural expression & social change," while leading their Media Awareness projects 2 days a week through our Afterschool Program. This past semester they ended the year with the student's work on display at the Thinkery. Talk about giving youth a voice!

As the program director it is my job to find partners in the community that not only have a passion and a talent to share but who can also work with at-risk youth. It has been evident the vision of MAP with every instructor that we have had the pleasure of working with. MAP's vision says "We see a dynamic relationship between youth and the communities they live in, where teaching kids to create and use media facilitates learning, growth & participation." This has been evident in the work that they have done in our south Austin community!

To sum it up, MAP has made an impact on our campus, our community, and most importantly, our students. They have given our students a voice and helped to develop new life time skills. -- Genevieve Deas, Blazier Elementary

Previous Experience/References It is with great enthusiasm that I write in support of the Paramount Theatre’s various education outreach programs. My students and I have been lucky enough to participate in STEM Through the Arts and Literacy to Life over the past several years, and the impact has not only been felt in our classroom, but campus-wide. My collaboration with the Paramount began with Literacy to Life residencies for both sections of my third grade bilingual language arts class during my first year teaching. Reilly receives Title I funding, and 93% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Through LTL, my students blossomed into creative writers who valued their own voices. Many of my students who were more linguistically reserved and shy came out of their shells and felt empowered because in the LTL curriculum, all of their ideas were valued and they were able to express themselves freely in English and in Spanish. STEM Through the Arts continued to validate my students’ creativity, but in the realm of problem solving. We were able to explore various math and science standards-aligned topics within the context of a carefully woven mystery that piqued everyone’s interest as we gathered clues and learned new skills. I saw my students’ levels of engagement soar through the roof as they eagerly waited for the next clue to be revealed. Students explored a variety of problem solving strategies in the process in order to arrive at the ultimate solution to the mystery, which bolstered their confidence in applying problem solving strategies to their independent work after the program. Another incredible benefit that I reaped from the educational outreach opportunities visiting my classroom was professional growth. I grew instructionally and was able to apply many of the concepts and strategies from STEM Through the Arts and Literacy to Life to other facets of my teaching as a result of my participation in such a creatively integrated curricular program. All of our experience at Reilly with the Paramoutn has enhanced the lives of our students academically, socially, and creatively. I would highly and readily recommend STEM Through the Arts and Literacy to Life to any other school to offer culturally enriching experiences to its students. Description In Zimbabwe, music is an important aspect of everyday life. There is no separation between performer and audience. We bring this holistic musical understanding to workshops and performances, tailoring instruction to any skill level. We work with students of all ages and musical backgrounds. Our programs are tailored to the needs of each presenter, and compliment STARR and TEKS requirements by introducing music vocabulary, authentic instruments, history, geography and culture. Sample Performance: Students and teachers are invited on a 45 minute exploration of Zimbabwean music and culture. Rattletree’s high-energy, interactive show gets everyone dancing, learning about traditional instruments, clapping, singing-along, and asking questions. Performances are appropriate for students of all ages. Sample Workshop: A typical workshop consists of a 30-45 minute interactive discussion about traditional Zimbabwean instruments - what they are, how they are played, and most importantly, how to actively listen to the music. The discussion may be followed by a hands-on workshop. We will guide the students through an exploration a traditional Shona music on the marimbas. At the conclusion of the workshop, the participants will be able to play a song together. This hands-on workshop may be followed by a school wide assembly. The Rattletree School of Marimba will perform a 45 minute high- energy concert, culminating in a performance with the band accompanied by the workshop participants. The entire audience is invited to participate with clapping, singing, and dancing.

Testimonial “I am excited to tell you about the growth I've witnessed in my students since they've participated in the theater class offered by Dr. Harden at Texas Preparatory School in Austin. My students live in a drastically underserved community and have had many challenges in their lives. These challenges have shaped their habits and personalities in ways which can make it difficult to move into a position of community responsibility. I have watched Dr. Harden and Ms. McDonald help these students become a tight community of support for each other. They've shown respect for the kids and helped them to understand the importance of respect for each other. One of my students began this class with his shoulders curved in and his head hung low as he communicated. In a matter of weeks, this wonderful young man has transformed into someone who wants to communicate his ideas, one who has found his strengths and is willing to take the lead role in his own success. All of my students have transformed and are realizing their own strengths, as well as the strengths of their classmates. Their self-esteem and sense of self worth have been boosted and they have a new understanding of their potential. What a wonderful gift! In addition, parents, community members as well as myself, have had the opportunity to recognize strengths in these children, giving us a new understanding of what they are capable of. This program will be something they will remember for the rest of their lives, as an opportunity to be great! It is my hope that the program continues for my future students and for many other students as well. This is an integral part in the future of these kids.” -- Mimi Dolan Texas Preparatory School, Austin

Testimonial I am a public school teacher who heard about Texas Folklife’s 2014 Stories Summer Institute workshop via public radio in Austin, TX. My personal interest in radio stories and the folk arts was piqued as I heard the advertisement for this summer professional development course. As a teacher, I am very burned out by the summer time. All of the extra hours and the needs of my students have taken their toll and I want to nurture my own curiosity and find my own sense adventure towards learning. I realized this would be such an interesting course for me to learn something new, something I loved. I enrolled in the course and it was everything I dreamed it to be. The opportunity to learn the skill and art of radio stories, work collaboratively with piers and explore and research an area of folk art in my community was such an invigorating experience. The instruction was excellent, the curriculum was fabulous and it was a very well organized program. Teachers are the most difficult audience for professional development because we are trained in pedagogy and learning. Therefore, when you satisfy and impress a group of teachers in your professional development workshop, you know you have done a great job! Texas Folklife did just that. Having a radio story as our final project was a point of pride for both myself and my teacher colleagues. If only our school district would take notice and learn from Texas Folklife. We would have many more happy teachers in the profession. At the end of the workshop, we were challenged to come up with ideas for integrating this model into our classroom. This was my favorite part. I was now an inspired and energized teacher who wanted to share her experience with her students. I teach dance, I was very interested in capturing the voices of my students. Since they identify as dancers, they are often more comfortable expressing themselves with their bodies than they are with their voices. Since dance is a part of cultural heritage, I wanted to document the stories of the dancers. My idea was to have a colleague’s radio production class interview my dance students. That way the project also became a pier to pier learning exchange. Since we are at an art school, sometimes the different strands develop ideas or stereotypes of what a dancer, or theatre kid, or visual artist is. The young students don't realize how they are playing into societal attitudes. I wanted the groups to have to really get to know each other, and pay attention to each other. I was so pleased when Texas Folklife brought the in-depth program to my school this spring and coached the students in radio production to create audio profiles of my dance students. It was so moving for the listeners who the audio pieces at our big spring dance concert. And the dancers learned that their literal voices matter as much as their bodies do. Stories from Deep in the Heart is an amazing project and provides a very important service to our students and our community. -Rachel Murray, Teacher, McCallum High School

Description Texas Music Partners (TMP) is a pending 501(c)3 organization dedicated to partnering with Central Texas schools with two goals in mind:

1. Showing elementary and middle school students a creative approach to combining technology and music, to create projects with smart phones. The smart phone is a readily available, powerful tool that already exists in most households, thus eliminating the need to purchase other expensive high tech equipment. Students can use their creativity and technical ability to create fun projects and learn how these projects can turn into careers for the next generation of artists, engineers, software developers, videographers, photographers, producers, etc.

2. To bring professional musicians into Central Texas schools and show students how they work together to create something as exciting as music. Each season will be dedicated to a different style, artist, or theme and introduce the students to the history and evolution of that particular style of music.

TMP also has a group of courses called “Thinking Outside the Box” to help middle school and high school students think positively and keep creativity in the career decision process. More information at www.texasmusicpartners.org/products/

Getting students interested in the arts, combined with technology is a great way to help ensure they stay in school and have a goal. TMP’s mission is to enhance a student’s curiosity and get them interested in choosing a fun, creative future in school, whether it is band, orchestra, choir, theater, math, science, etc.
