    Bastrop County Recycling Resources Guide Information about Household Hazardous Waste in Bastrop The Cities of Bastrop, Elgin, and Smithville, Bastrop County, and Keep Bastrop County Beautiful are partners in helping to keep Bastrop County clean. Every two or three years, they work to hold household hazardous waste collection events, but that is not enough to keep up, and to do so, other sources of funding are needed. On average, it costs about $60 per household to dispose of hazardous waste. Proper disposal of HHW is important not only due to environmental concerns, but also for the personal health and well being of sanitation workers and the public at large. Poisons in the home are dangerous. According to statistics from the National Capital Poison Center: • There is one exposure to poison every 14 seconds in the US. • Two million+ poisonings are reported annually. • The majority of poisonings involve everyday household items such as cleaning supplies, medicines, cosmetics and personal care items. • 89 percent of all poisonings occur in the home. • 75 percent of poisonings are ingestion of a substance. • Children and Poison: o 53 percent of poisonings occur in children under the age of six. Child poisonings under the age of six represent 2 percent of o poison fatalities. Congress Prostitution Problem April 1999 ABSTRACT C>outh Austin's century and half year old history of prostitution which was on the Grand Avenue leading to the Capitol of the State of Texas, was responsible for disrupting the lives of business people and the citizens who live there. In 1992 citizens began meeting with the police to express their concerns over the growing problem of prostitution, especially the presence of a hill top pornographic theater across from a junior high school. Using police stings, they often netted over a hundred "Johns" along with an elected state official. It 1995 a new way of addressing the problem was formally put into action. A.P.D. Crime Net South officers began to address the issues of prostitution by using the SARA model. Now a former feed store and hot bed for prostitution, has become a Mexican Restaurant where President Bill Clinton ate. SCANNING: The Crime Net unit looked at the long history of prostitution, they surveyed police reports, talked to fellow officers and with citizens. They found that a high number of police calls for service were taking place at several motels along South Congress. They used surveillance, undercover buys, stepped up patrols and the abatement law to gather additional information ANALYSIS: In assessing the problem they found that the motels in question seemed to encourage and support the presences of the prostitute by allowing them on the property along with drug dealers. Sometimes the motel employees were the drug dealers. RESPONSE: They meet with the owners and neighborhood associations to talk about the problems.

    AUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT PATROL UTILIZATION STUDY FINAL REPORT July 2012 1120 Connecticut Avenue NW, Suite 930 Washington, DC 20036 Executive Summary Sworn Staffing for the Austin Police Department The Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) was retained by the City of Austin to provide the Austin City Council and City Executives with recommendations for an innovative, sustainable method to determine current and future police department staffing needs. The objectives of the study include: reviewing the current demand for sworn law enforcement, including calls for service, investigative workload, staffing for special events, and utilization of support staff; examining benchmarks for police staffing that are used in a sample of U.S. cities with populations from 500,000 to one million; gathering information on local community expectations regarding perceptions of safety, crime reduction strategies, community policing, and patrol utilization; recommending a methodology for the calculation of police staffing needs that can be updated and replicated by city staff in the future; and providing recommendations regarding three- to five-year staffing projections based on the community-based goals. Assessing Police Staffing Officers per Thousand Population One measure that has been used for some time to assess officer staffing levels in Austin has been a ratio of officers per thousand residents. For a number of years the City has used “two per thousand” as its benchmark for minimum police staffing. The city’s population in April 2012 was listed as 824,205 which would dictate that the sworn staffing of the Austin Police Department (APD) be authorized at a minimum of 1,648. Although the two-per-thousand ratio is convenient and provides dependable increases in police staffing as the city’s population rises, it does not appear to be based on an objective assessment of policing needs in Austin.

    ANNUAL REPORT — 2016 A GREAT LEAP FORWARD Austin Film Society 1901 East 51st Street Austin, TX 78723 512.322.0145 austinfilm.org TO OUR STAKEHOLDERS The Austin Film Society has long held the dream of our own full-time cinema, a local place where people can assemble to communally explore all that international film culture has to offer. This was the year we took action on that dream and signed a long-term lease with The Linc to create the AFS Cinema. Two full-time screens will support interesting, challenging and entertaining cinematic events, lovingly curated by our brilliant team of programmers. A kitchen, lobby bar and event hall will support community gatherings and provide extra income to supplement ticket sales. The AFS Cinema was not AFS’s only program expansion in fiscal 2016. We also opened Austin Public, a 7,000-square-foot television studio in East Austin open to anyone in Austin who wants to explore filmmaking. By virtue of a contract with the City of Austin, AFS is able to offer classes, studio space and equipment at an incredibly low barrier to entry, and distribute locally made work on our channels and website. Additionally, we are making progress on plans for building out the former National Guard Armory into a creative media hub with the help of the 2012 bonds. Our facilities team expects to have schematic designs to show in 2017 as well as a plan for obtaining the $3.5 million-plus needed to create a fully functioning building. Meanwhile at AFS, it’s business as usual, with our instructors delivering youth media programs at under-resourced schools in Austin and our programmers planning screenings at various beloved Austin theaters while the AFS Cinema is dark for renovations (November 2016 –Spring 2017).
