I & I NSW WILD FISHERIES RESEARCH PROGRAM Silver Trevally (Pseudocaranx georgianus) EXPLOITATION STATUS GROWTH OVERFISHED Minimum legal length (MLL) of 30 cm total length was implemented in September 2007 but recent size composition data indicate silver trevally should still be considered ‘growth overfished’. Status should be reviewed after the impact of the MLL implementation has been fully assessed. LandCorp Denmark East Development Precinct Flora and Fauna Survey October 2016 Executive summary Introduction Through the Royalties for Regions “Growing our South” initiative, the Shire of Denmark has received funding to provide a second crossing of the Denmark River, to upgrade approximately 6.5 km of local roads and to support the delivery of an industrial estate adjacent to McIntosh Road. GHD Pty Ltd (GHD) was commissioned by LandCorp to undertake a biological assessment of the project survey area. The purpose of the assessment was to identify and describe flora, vegetation and fauna within the survey area. The outcomes of the assessment will be used in the environmental assessment and approvals process and will identify the possible need for, and scope of, further field investigations will inform environmental impact assessment of the road upgrades. The survey area is approximately 68.5 ha in area and includes a broad area of land between Scotsdale Road and the Denmark River and the road reserve and adjacent land along East River Road and McIntosh Road between the Denmark Mt Barker Road and South Western Highway. A 200 m section north and south along the Denmark Mt Barker Road from East River Road was also surveyed. The biological assessment involved a desktop review and three separate field surveys, including a winter flora and fauna survey, spring flora and fauna survey and spring nocturnal fauna survey. Fauna surveys also included the use of movement sensitive cameras in key locations. Key biological aspects The key biological aspects and constraints identified for the survey area are summarised in the following table. -

Photo: Edin Whitehead 2 Introduction This project (POP2017-06) builds on the findings of INT2016-04 (Gaskin 2017). A range of commercial fisheries target aggregations of surface shoaling fish. Purse seining is commonly used to capture these fish schools. The dense fish schools create a phenomenon known as fish workups. These fish drive up prey items to the sea surface and observations suggest that this forms an important food source for a range of seabird species. There is currently poor knowledge of both the diet of surface-foraging seabirds and what prey items are being made available to seabirds from fish workups. This has limited our understanding of the mechanisms through which changes in the distribution and/or abundance of fish workups may be driving seabird population changes (population status and annual breeding success). -

Baker Report for: Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board August 2009 UNCOMMON, CRYPTIC and SITE-ASSOCIATED REEF FISHES: RESULTS OF SURVEYS ALONG FLEURIEU PENINSULA & IN ENCOUNTER BAY 2009 SUMMARY Reef locations along the Fleurieu Peninsula and Encounter Bay were surveyed by diving and snorkelling, from December 2008 to June 2009. The surveys are part of a series we began in 2007, through which we have aimed to (i) develop a suitable non-destructive technique to search for various uncommon reef fishes (mostly benthic, and many cryptic) throughout South Australia; and (ii) record and photograph such fishes, in order to learn more about their distribution, habitats, and habits. Our target list comprises more than 50 species from 14 families, for which little information is available on full distribution within South Australia, and habitat. This is a multi-species Beach-based commercial fishers in nearshore waters of the fishery targeting many estuarine finfish species, with the South Coast Bioregion catch various finfish species, mainly main fishing methods being gill net and haul net. The main using trap nets (herring only), beach seines, haul nets and gill target species are cobbler (Cnidoglanis macrocephalus), nets. The main target species are Australian salmon (Arripis black bream (Acanthopagrus butcheri), sea mullet and truttaceus) and Australian herring (Arripis georgianus), with Australian herring. small quantities of southern sea garfish (Hyporhamphus Recreational melanochir) and sea mullet (Mugil cephalus) also taken. Most finfish caught recreationally in South Coast Bioregion Australian salmon form large migratory schools, particularly estuaries and nearshore waters are taken by line fishing. during the autumn spawning season, that move along the Shore and boat-based fishing are both popular. -

Functional biodiversity of New Zealand’s marine fishes versus depth and latitude A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Statistics at Massey University, Auckland, New Zealand Elisabeth Miro Valerie Myers June 2020 i Thesis Abstract Understanding patterns and processes governing biodiversity along broad-scale environmental gradients requires an assessment of not only taxonomic richness, but also morphological and functional traits of organisms. The deep sea is the largest habitat on earth and provides many important ecosystem services. Decreases in light, temperature, and trophic resources, along with increases in pressure that occur with greater depth, renders the deep sea one of the most constraining environments for supporting life. However, little is known about how biodiversity, and especially functional biodiversity, changes along the depth gradient. This thesis aimed to fill this gap by using a combination of traits associated with food acquisition and locomotion to quantify and characterise patterns of functional diversity across large-scale depth and latitude gradients and to investigate potential mechanisms driving biodiversity. First, to identify the major selective forces acting on morphology, I documented patterns of variation in the traits of fishes at broad spatial scales. I found that with increasing depth, fishes, on average, became larger and more elongate, and had a larger oral gape and eye size.
