And the fact that, over the years, the game has attracted more gifted writers than any other, from Ring Lardner to John Updike, Robert Coover and Philip Roth. Random baseball moments—not just epic coups like Bobby Thomson’s 1951 “miracle” home run—persist in memory long after they should have evanesced. Kevin Cook’s heartfelt and entertaining “Electric October” is ostensibly about the 1947 World Series between Joe DiMaggio’s Yankees and the Dodgers of Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese and Dixie Walker. The book is really about the lost drama and culture of mid- 20th-century baseball still embedded in the minds of old-timers. A onetime editor at Sports Illustrated, Mr. Cook doesn’t focus on the stars DiMaggio and Robinson.     1953 Topps, a Much Closer Look

    In 1984, Lew Lipset reported that Bob Sevchuk reconstructed the first print run Sheets A and B. 1953 Topps, a much closer look By George Vrechek Tom Billing of Springfield, Ohio, is a long-time collector of vintage baseball cards. Billing is among a small group of collectors who continue to stay enthused about old cardboard by discovering and collecting variations, printing differences and other oddities. Often such discoveries are of interest to a fairly limited audience. Occasionally though, such discoveries amount to a loose string that, if pulled, unravel mysteries of interest to many. I pulled on one of Tom’s strings recently. Sid Hudson throws the first curve The “string” that Billing sent me was an image of a miscut 1953 Topps of Sid Hudson. The right edge of the base of the off-centered card had a tiny sliver of black to the right of the otherwise red base nameplate. Was this a variation, a printing difference or none of the above? Would anyone care? As I thought about it, I voted for none of the above since it was really just a miscut card showing some of the adjacent card on the print sheet. But wait a minute! That shouldn’t have happened with the 1953 Topps. Why not? We will see. The loose string was an off-center Lou Hudson showing an adjacent black border. An almost great article Ten years ago I wrote an SCD article about the printing of the 1952 Topps. I received some nice feedback on that effort in which I utilized arithmetic, miscuts and partial sheets to offer an explanation of how the 1952 set was printed and the resulting scarcities.

The priority for all of us was to focus on mitigating the spread of this virus and keeping our communities safe. To that end, we elected to reschedule our annual celebration one year out at a new venue, the John Bassett Theatre in order to recognize our inductees and special award recipients. Our annual induction ceremony and awards gala is in its’ 27th year and I offer my personal and profound thanks for your past support for our annual celebration and related community activities. This year’s OSHOF Gala will present another stellar “Class of 2021” inductee lineup including an outstanding selection of special award recipients. Whether you choose to come on board as a major partner, as a corporate sponsor or with the purchase of individual tickets for you and your guests, your participation provides invaluable support enabling us to showcase and appreciate our most recognized sports athletes, community leaders and volunteer citizens.     Triple Plays Analysis

    A Second Look At The Triple Plays By Chuck Rosciam This analysis updates my original paper published on SABR.org and Retrosheet.org and my Triple Plays sub-website at SABR. The origin of the extensive triple play database1 from which this analysis stems is the SABR Triple Play Project co-chaired by myself and Frank Hamilton with the assistance of dozens of SABR researchers2. Using the original triple play database and updating/validating each play, I used event files and box scores from Retrosheet3 to build a current database containing all of the recorded plays in which three outs were made (1876-2019). In this updated data set 719 triple plays (TP) were identified. [See complete list/table elsewhere on Retrosheet.org under FEATURES and then under NOTEWORTHY EVENTS]. The 719 triple plays covered one-hundred-forty-four seasons. 1890 was the Year of the Triple Play that saw nineteen of them turned. There were none in 1961 and in 1974. On average the number of TP’s is 4.9 per year.
