We played good team ball today, our defense did a great job once again, playing that ‘bend and don’t break’ defense, it’s about points and not yards. We forced turnovers, and they got one too but that made it a lot easier on us. We did a good job holding the ball, dinking and dunking, running the clock, and I’m just proud of how our kids finished. I thought our guys were patient and tackled well, I knew that was going to be a big key. Their guys are slippery and hard to tackle, but we did a good job of playing to that.     Heritage HUSKIES Heritage The Apple Cup Dogs and cats. Could there be a more natural rivalry? Huskies and Cougars. The annual Washington-Washington State matchup is definitely one of the best rivalries in college football today. Up for grabs each year is the Apple Cup, a trophy sponsored by the Washington State Apple Commission and presented by the state’s governor. The series dates back to 1900 when the teams played to a 5-5 tie in Seattle, but only since 1962 has the winner been awarded the Apple Cup. Washington holds a 61-27-6 record in the 94-game series, and is 29-11 in Apple Cup games. Like most rivalries, each game is a new chapter with unpredictable results, regardless of records, mo- mentum or history. It is a game based more on emotion and determination than scouting reports and talent. Though the schools are on opposite sides of the state, creating a geographic split among fans, the annual meeting splits the state in other ways — some- times between members of the same family. Such was the case in 1990 when Husky freshman Travis Hanson waged a personal kicking battle with his brother Jason, the Cougars’ All-American kicker. By Robert On November first, we have a community high school football game rival- ry. These are 2 wonderful teams who have been doing very well in the past 2yrs. These teams are the Omak Pioneers and the Okanogan Bulldogs. We are small schools with high expectations in our football programs. Omak is 6 and 0 this year after an unde- feated season followed by a loss in the playoffs to the Riverside Rams - a small school outside of the Spokane district which is near the small town of Elk, WA. The Okanogan Bulldogs are usually favored in our community and the only team from a different division that has been put into our league as a league game for the Pioneers ! We call this the “Backyard Brawl”. The Sports Group is expecting both teams to get into the playoffs. But yet we have to wait and see. Both teams are undefeated in their league games so this is the most important game in our November predictions.

I’m, of course, talking about the elections. A couple of observations: My email address was used by both political parties to the extent that about 50% of my incoming email was political (almost worse than robo- calls). One more time the Pollsters are being questioned regarding their methods and accuracy in predicting the future. The system in the U.S., whereby States control their election mechanisms, and the system that lets the States determine who gets their votes for President is still poorly understood. Many, apparently, feel who gets elected is determined by the ‘Decision- Desk’ at the major networks. In many cases, lawyers will be the ones still making money from the process. Regardless of the outcome, we still have COVID-19 to deal with. Meanwhile….the COVID situation has gone from bad to worse with new cases setting records. The timing was interesting. First we heard good news about a new Vaccine that got our hopes up. We thought, ‘The light at the end of the tunnel’ was real, just to discover that it was the Governor, with a flashlight, telling us to go back to hunkering down a while longer. For reasons that will likely entertain professionals who deal with human behavior, rumors that we might be in for more restrictions, once again set off a ‘Toilet Paper Frenzy’. Pretty much proves the theory that if you have to stay at home and hunker down, it’s OK to run out of food…but NOT TP! On the 16th came the good news, as the second firm announced that their Corona virus vaccine is about 95% effective.

When out on Martin Stadium there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my seat to see what was the matter. Away from the bench I flew like a flash, grabbed my spirit sticks and began to bash. The sun glazed on the new-fallen snow, gave the luster of midday to players below. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, but our mighty Cougar Butch, and our players so dear. With the little helmet car, so lively and nice, I knew in a moment it must be coach Price. More rapid than Huskies, his players they came, And he whistled, and shouted and called them by name: Now Gesser, now Trufant! Now Bush, now Darling! On Basler! On Green! On Dunning and Derting! To another first down, to the end of the end zone! The UW Huskies, we will dethrone.
