Washington Huskies vs. Washington State Cougars: Will The Apple Cup Runneth Over? Author : Robert D. Cobb Despite living in the heart of Big 10 country, I have always been drawn to the Apple Cup rivalry game between PAC-12 in-state rivals Washington and Washington State. U-Dub vs Wazzu. Big-city Starbucks-drinking Seattle vs. out-of-the-way country bumpkin Pullman. The Apple Cup is more than just dogs vs. cats, as in Huskies vs. Cougars, but perhaps one of the most underrated rivalry games in the country. If you make not have heard of it before, you will become very familiar with it by the end of the afternoon, as this is THE Apple Cup rivalry game to end all. In terms of West Coast rivalry games, the Apple Cup lacks the glitz and glamour of USC vs. Notre Dame and UCLA, the elitist and liberal academia battle of intellectualism as Cal and Stanford, the pure and open hatred that is the “Civil War” in neighboring Oregon between Oregon and Oregon State, or the bitter and nasty grudge match in the Southwest known as the Territorial Cup between Arizona and Arizona State. In a series that started back in 1900 with a 5-5 tie, and that the Huskies have dominated in holding a 70-32-8 lead, including last season’s 45-10 rout in Seattle, can the Cougars return the favor this year in Pullman? With a trip to the Pac-12 title game on the line and in-state bragging rights from Walla Walla to Spokane on the line, sixth-ranked Washington rolls into Pullman on the heels of a 44-18 romp of Arizona State.

Husky Stadium community resource and public asset for everyone UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON Husky Stadium “Every citizen of Washington should be proud to know that the greatest stadium in the world will be built on the campus of our own State University. Generations of Washingtonians will visit it at its beautiful and permanent home on the shores of Lake Washington. They will see it for what it is— an imperishable monument to the friendship and generous support which the people of this commonwealth have always accorded their University.” Associated Students of the University of Washington, 1920 Husky Stadium community resource and public asset For close to a century, Husky Stadium has served as a community resource and an important symbol of the State of Washington’s commitment to higher education. It is a regional landmark, home to historic football victories and also the host of more than 55 community events involving more than 88,000 people every year, including over 600,000 Husky football fans. Through the decades, the UW and the local community have reinforced Husky Stadium’s identity as a public facility serving a public purpose, rejecting offers to lease it out permanently for professional football or other sports. UW students, alumni, and other citizens have provided important financial support over the years that has expanded the Stadium’s capacity and preserved its structural integrity without having to draw upon public funds. Financing the stadium has never been easy —the student fundraising drive for the $300,000 needed to build it in 1920 was $100,000 in debt on the stadium’s opening day.

  • Washington State at Washington Post-Game Quotes Husky Stadium Nov
Washington State at Washington Post-Game Quotes Husky Stadium Nov. 29, 2019 Washington Head Coach Chris Petersen Opening Statement: I’m really happy for the seniors, there are only so many groups of guys who can go through here and say they never lost to their rival. We played good team ball today, our defense did a great job once again, playing that ‘bend and don’t break’ defense, it’s about points and not yards. We forced turnovers, and they got one too but that made it a lot easier on us. We did a good job holding the ball, dinking and dunking, running the clock, and I’m just proud of how our kids finished. Did Washington State do anything different strategically from past games? They run the same offense every single game, and they do a great job of it. I thought our guys were patient and tackled well, I knew that was going to be a big key. Their guys are slippery and hard to tackle, but we did a good job of playing to that. How do you think Jacob Eason bounced back today? I thought we took a step forward with him. He set his feet a little better, he had some good balls. It is still hard against those ones that are really open with a chance to score. There was a lot of progress there for him. That is what it is about, progress and moving forward. Why did you have so much success going to your tight ends? We have good tight ends.

  • HUSKIES Heritage the Apple Cup Dogs and Cats
Heritage HUSKIES Heritage The Apple Cup Dogs and cats. Could there be a more natural rivalry? Huskies and Cougars. The annual Washington-Washington State matchup is definitely one of the best rivalries in college football today. Up for grabs each year is the Apple Cup, a trophy sponsored by the Washington State Apple Commission and presented by the state’s governor. The series dates back to 1900 when the teams played to a 5-5 tie in Seattle, but only since 1962 has the winner been awarded the Apple Cup. Washington holds a 61-27-6 record in the 94-game series, and is 29-11 in Apple Cup games. Like most rivalries, each game is a new chapter with unpredictable results, regardless of records, mo- mentum or history. It is a game based more on emotion and determination than scouting reports and talent. Though the schools are on opposite sides of the state, creating a geographic split among fans, the annual meeting splits the state in other ways — some- times between members of the same family. Such was the case in 1990 when Husky freshman Travis Hanson waged a personal kicking battle with his brother Jason, the Cougars’ All-American kicker. But while individual stories give the Apple Cup its The Apple Cup trophy is awarded annually to the winner of the game between Washington and character, its enormity and magnitude come from the Washington State. The Huskies lead the series 29-11 since it became known as the Apple Cup. number of times the game has determined Rose Bowl fate for either team.
