Inspired by classroom conversations regarding the parallels between the earliest forms of cinema – as exemplified by the films of Auguste and Louis Lumière – and the now ubiquitous .gif file Lumière Word Cloud also asks us to reconsider the position and position that cinema history occupies in the contemporary classroom. Washington Huskies vs. Washington State Cougars: Will The Apple Cup Runneth Over? Author : Robert D. Cobb Despite living in the heart of Big 10 country, I have always been drawn to the Apple Cup rivalry game between PAC-12 in-state rivals Washington and Washington State. U-Dub vs Wazzu. Big-city Starbucks-drinking Seattle vs. out-of-the-way country bumpkin Pullman. The Apple Cup is more than just dogs vs. cats, as in Huskies vs. Cougars, but perhaps one of the most underrated rivalry games in the country. If you make not have heard of it before, you will become very familiar with it by the end of the afternoon, as this is THE Apple Cup rivalry game to end all. In terms of West Coast rivalry games, the Apple Cup lacks the glitz and glamour of USC vs. Notre Dame and UCLA, the elitist and liberal academia battle of intellectualism as Cal and Stanford, the pure and open hatred that is the “Civil War” in neighboring Oregon between Oregon and Oregon State, or the bitter and nasty grudge match in the Southwest known as the Territorial Cup between Arizona and Arizona State. In a series that started back in 1900 with a 5-5 tie, and that the Huskies have dominated in holding a 70-32-8 lead, including last season’s 45-10 rout in Seattle, can the Cougars return the favor this year in Pullman? With a trip to the Pac-12 title game on the line and in-state bragging rights from Walla Walla to Spokane on the line, sixth-ranked Washington rolls into Pullman on the heels of a 44-18 romp of Arizona State. -

MEDIA ALERT – January 16, 2018 Due to Overwhelming Fan Demand, Encore of ‘Tommy Wiseau’s ‘The Room’’ Comes to Cinemas for One More Night on January 19 WHAT: Referred to as "the ‘Citizen Kane’ of bad movies," “The Room” has received a remarkable resurgence due to the popularity of James Franco’s “The Disaster Artist” and Tommy Wiseau’s recent appearance on The Golden Globes. On January 10, fans came out in droves as Wiseau’s opus hit more than 500 big screens across the nation with “Tommy Wiseau’s ‘The Room.’” Due to overwhelming demand, an encore screening has been set for Friday, January 19, 2018. In addition to the full-length feature, moviegoers will enjoy a special look at the new “Best F(r)iends” trailer, starring Wiseau and Greg Sestero. Starring Tommy Wiseau, directed by Tommy Wiseau, written by Tommy Wiseau, screenplay by Tommy Wiseau and produced by Tommy Wiseau, “The Room” follows the story of Johnny (Wiseau). Johnny is a bank employee who, seemingly, lives happily in a San Francisco townhouse with Lisa, his fiancée. One day she gets bored with Tommy and seduces his best friend, Mark (played by Wiseau’s best friend, Greg Sestero, author of the award-winning 2013 memoir “The Disaster Artist”). Johnny screams, “You’re tearing me apart, Lisa!”– and, with that, nothing, or no one, will ever be the same. Hughes and the Honorable Members of the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey: I have the honor to transmit to you herewith the Report of the State of New Jersey Tercentenary Commission. This report describee the activities of the Commission from its establishment on June 24, 1958 to the completion of its work on December 31, 1964. It was the task of the Commission to organize a program of events that Would appropriately commemorate the three hundredth anniversary of the founding of New Jersey in 1664. I believe this report will show that the Commission effectively met its responsibility, and that the ~ercentenary obs~rvance instilled in the people of our state a renewfd spirit of pride in the New Jersey heritage. Journey to the Academy Awards: An Investigation of Oscar-Shortlisted and Nominated Documentaries (2014-2016) PRELIMINARY KEY FINDINGS By Caty Borum Chattoo, Co-Director, Center for Media & Social Impact American University School of Communication | Washington, D.C. February 2016 OVERVIEW For a documentary filmmaker, being recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences for an Oscar nomination in the Best Documentary Feature category is often the pinnacle moment in a career. Beyond the celebratory achievement, the acknowledgment can open up doors for funding and opportunities for next films and career opportunities. The formal recognition happens in three phases: It begins in December with the Academy’s announcement of a shortlist—15 films that advance to a formal nomination for the Academy’s Best Documentary Feature Award. Then, in mid-January, the final list of five official nominations is announced. Finally, at the end of February each year, the one winner is announced at the Academy Awards ceremony. Beyond a film’s narrative and technical prowess, the marketing campaigns that help a documentary make it to the shortlist and then the final nomination list are increasingly expensive and insular, from advertisements in entertainment trade outlets to lavish events to build buzz among Academy members and industry influencers. What does it take for a documentary film and its director and producer to make it to the top—the Oscars shortlist, the nomination and the win? Which film directors are recognized—in terms of race and gender?
