Wenn man Regina Spektor bei einem Live-Auftritt lauschen darf beispielsweise. Die New Yorkerin, die noch in der Sowjetunion geboren wurde und als Neunjährige in die USA kam, verzaubert mit ihrer Stimme und ihrem Klavierspiel jeden Zuhörer. Kein Wunder: Ursprünglich wollte sie Konzertpianistin werden, doch das hat sich zum Schöneren gewendet, wie sie einmal sagte: „Ich wollte immer klassisch konzertieren, von Ort zu Ort reisen, neue Stücke einstudieren und Menschen stundenlang auf dem Klavier vorspielen. Genau das mache ich jetzt, nur nicht mit Kompositionen von Chopin und Mozart, sondern meinen eigenen.“ 2001 erschien ihr erstes Album „11:11“, eine Sammlung stark vom Jazz und Blues beeinflusster Lieder. Doch erst mit dem grandiosen „Soviet Kitsch“ und anschließend mit dem vergoldeten „Begin To Hope“ gelang ihr der Durchbruch. Spektor ging mit den Strokes, den Kings Of Leon und den wesensverwandten Moldy Peaches auf Tour, ihre Songs sind in diversen Serien und Filmen wie Orange Is The New Black (für das Stück „You’ve Got Time“ wurde sie für den Grammy nominiert), Grey’s Anatomy, How I Met Your Mother, The Good Wife und vielen anderen verwendet worden. Sie spielte für die Obamas und ihre Gäste im Weißen Haus und trat bei Benefizveranstaltungen für Tibet, Ärzte Ohne Grenzen und andere auf. Auf Tour mit The Moldy Peaches lernte sie nebenbei deren Gitarristen und ihren heutigen Ehegatten Jack Dishel kennen, mit dem sie seit 2014 einen Sohn hat. Das hatte auch Einfluss auf ihre Musik: Im vergangenen Jahr erschien Spektors siebtes Album „Remember Us To Life“. Anders als bei den Vorgängeralben, bei denen Regina Spektor Songs aufnahm, die sie im Laufe der Karriere geschrieben hatte, besteht die Platte aus neu komponierten und geschriebenen Liedern. Regina Spektor fand während und nach der Schwangerschaft genug Zeit und begab sich in einen Schreibprozess: „Ich habe in meiner Schwangerschaft mehr Kunst gemacht und war einfach wahnsinnig inspiriert.“ Das gibt dem Werk seinen einheitlichen, fesselnden, abwechslungsreichen und berührenden Charakter.
