The summit database is believed to be complete. If you find a summit that meets the criteria for addition, or you find a mistake in this ARM please contact the Association Manager. Activators are asked to submit details of proposed additional summits to the Association Manager. Summits cannot be counted for points until a reference number has been allocated by the Association Manager. 1.2 General information To qualify for a summit it has to meet the following requirements: The summit must be verified using topographic data. The summit must be elevated at least 150 m from its surroundings In the case of doubt the Management Team will decide whether the Summit will be added to the list The summit database can only be changed by the acceptance of the SOTA management team. Summits cannot be counted for points until a launch date and individual reference 1 1 See General Rules for parameter definitions on www.sota.org.uk/RulesandGuidelines Page 4 of 12 Document S74.1 v1.3 Summits on the Air – ARM for Auckland and Campbell Islands (ZL9) number has been allocated by the Association Manager and approved by the SOTA Management Team. 1.3 Rights of way and access issues Access to the Sub Antarctic Islands in New Zealand are restricted. It is important that you obtain all necessary permits from the New Zealand Department of Conservation before landing. If appropriate permission to land and operate on the islands are not sought, then this would render operations invalid for SOTA (and DXCC as well) You should always carry a map and know how to use it, and always follow marked trails where possible to reduce the damage caused by human traffic. 1.4 Maps and navigation Prior to landing, it is vital that you have prepared yourself to activate any summits appropriately. You must carry paper mapping with you, and should be aware of any restricted areas in place in accordance with your permit to land. 1.5 Safety considerations Before hiking always check the weather, and remember the dangers of operating in thunderstorms. The Sub Antarctic Islands are inhospitable and isolated places, and you should be prepared for the fact that if rescue is required, it may be many days or more away. In case of emergency, it is recommended that you activate a Personal Locator Beacon or EPIRB device to begin SAR operations. Familiarisation with Emergency Communications (such as distress signals) is recommended prior to landing. 1.6 Foreign HAMs in ZL9 ZL9 is administratively part of New Zealand. Holders of CEPT licenses are permitted to operate for up to 3 months. Otherwise, a license should be sought from the NZ government to operate through [email protected]. A copy of your licence, passport, and approved landing permit will be required. 1.7 Awards There are no Association-specific awards at the moment. 1.8 Disclaimer Hiking, hill-walking and rock-climbing are potentially dangerous activities. The SOTA Management Team and their associates assume no responsibility for accidents. Each participant does so at his or her own risk, and must decide, on the basis of their own ability, whether an objective is achievable. The listing of a summit in the reference does not mean that it is easy to reach, and it is always worth seeking local advice for all but the simplest of expeditions.
